How to create a hand-held EMP

You should know that there are a large number of tutorials online for ways to make a handheld EMP (electromagnetic pulse). They will disrupt electronic devices in your vicinity and would be very useful if masked men approach you and try to photograph you with a potentially illegal biometric collection application. If made correctly they are harmless to people, and if made incorrectly they are most likely harmful to the operator. It is a non-violent defense device.

Are you confusing a signal jammer or an actual pulse? I'm no expert by any means, but the tech you'd have to lug around makes it pretty impractical.

Plus, there that whole pacemaker thingy, ya know? A pretty bad idea overall.

Also, let's say the police or ICE or your local chapter of Piss Boy LARPers are walking up on somebody carrying this thing around or with it in a backpack. What happens when you reach over to press the big red button on that package or at the end of a length of wire feeding into your bag? Pretty sure their first assumption won't be EMP device.

You'd need one hell of an EMP to deflect a barrage of bullets.

Bullets are lead. How exactly does one expect an EMP to have any effect on them...?

Just a strong enough EMP would solve it. Not a scientist but guess is that a magnetic pulse strong enough to deflect bullets would do something to your atoms as well

since it's not a bomb, you don't need the safeguards required for harmful devices. that means you can use things like voice activation etc.

::: spoiler Same thing that eventually happens in every What If? when more power is added :::

There are plenty of actually handheld ones powerful enough to disrupt small electronic devices like cell phones. Enough to make them fault and reboot.

Anyone trying to collect biometric information in such a brazen manner is not bright enough to use it for anything useful. There are so many more subtle and clandestine ways to obtain it that don’t risk being caught or identified.

Ah, well, they don't need to worry about being caught or identified, they can just stop you in the street. I thought you were referring to scammers or something.
