Right?

Who gives a flying fuck?

I guess the answer is apparently a shit ton of losers with no lives of their own.

I feel insulted that I've even been forced to be made aware of this over the last 48 hours.

56

It isn’t helpful to think of them as losers. Like the image says, no bread all circuses. Without making any inferences about these two people pictured, the media and public focus on their engagement is in the service of maintaining and strengthening the status quo power structures.

Resist the urge to dismiss this as crank conspiracy thinking. There is a system, even if it wasn’t designed and even if it isn’t organized. And the media is by and large a tool of that system.

9

"We should stop indulging in celebrity and start GIVING A FUCK!"

"Okay, what should we care about?"

"Wow, thanks. Now I'm full of helpless anxiety. Anything I can do about any of this?"

"DO SOMETHING! DO SOMETHING! DO SOMETHING!"

"Well, this has been enervating as fuck. If you don't mind, I'm going back to hide in my den and watch movies until the world ends."

"Wake up sheeple!"

"OK cool youre right I see now, I understand. What are we gonna do about it?"

"They've played you for fools! WAKE UP SEE WHATS HAPPENING"

"Yeah I see its awful. How can we help?"

"You're a pawn in their game WAKE UP"

"Fuck it gonna go have a wank"

17

I really despise this type of argument. There's plenty you can care about that isn't billionaire pop stars or famines.

Theres so much optimistic shit these days and education has never been this accessible. Join a book club, environmental club, local community, hobby niche, care about different countries and regions. I barely find enough free time for all these activities.

There are literally a billion things you should care more about than a billionaires getting engaged. It's frankly disgusting.

I think the key here is "we". Collectively if people had a common understanding of what is going on in the world they would be appalled and demand more of our leaders (or get new ones)

Instead people vaguely know what is going on, through the biased lense of their news sources.

I think if you asked most Americans who Netanyahu is and what he is doing you'd get a blank stare. If you ask them what is up with tswift they would excitedly explain that she just got engaged and recently had a crazy expensive tour.

How any of this gets corrected is beyond me, and that's exactly how the people in power want it.

4

I think if you asked most Americans who Netanyahu is and what he is doing you’d get a blank stare.

Idk about that. His name has been in national news for decades. Like, maybe somewhere behind Vladimir Putin and Kim Jung Un in terms of US visibility.

How any of this gets corrected is beyond me

Say what you will about the Trotskyists, but they looooved making newspapers. I don't think there's a shortage of modern Alt-Media, either. Not hard to get an earful of press about the state of the world. What's much more tricky is coordinating actions, particularly at the local level. There is not, to my knowledge, a Houston-centric news organization that does a good job of organizing and orienting local people on municipal issues. But I'm a white atheist professional worker out in the suburbs, so its very possible I'm just out of touch with what more radical and well-connected folks in churches and labor unions are up to.

Why does Taylor Swift get such a massive pass from everybody in terms of scrutiny?

3
lemmy.ml

Seems like I see more memes about Taylor swift using jets then other celebrities. They're all equally shit though.

7

Yeah true, I guess I meant more before this recent uptick in memes/criticism. I don't expect celebrity musicians to be paragons of virtue or fight every political battle for justice but I do expect...... something? Like a little bit? Have a spine maybe?

I mean she can do whatever she wants, but that is the point right, she can do whatever she wants she is an unbelievably rich white lady who politicians and other powerful figures can't touch without risking MASSIVE blowback in public opinion that money and distraction won't be able to make go away.

2
sopuli.xyz

Ok that would be the part I understand, I am asking about the part I don't.

2

People that idolize celebs are wild to me. Taylor wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire girl.

As I've gotten older my celebs are people that put tutorials on YouTube. Like oh shit, ishaan my favorite electrician just dropped a fire new video on neutrals and grounding on 3 phase. Or that one homesteader just dropped a short on how to grow bigger pumpkins, get the popcorn

20
lemmy.world

Absolutely. I wish Taylor Swift all the best, just like I do anyone, but I couldn't care less about her or her life. Alec Watson from Technology Connections? I'd take a bullet for that guy.

I don't wish all the best to any billionaire.

You're a fundamentally failed human being if you allow yourself to hoard this much wealth. At least tech billionaires pretend to have some sort of ideal goal they're working on but entertainer just be straight up pure narcissists.

8
lemmy.ml

I believe that the best for billionaires is to be relieved of the morally corrupting influence of their wealth, and I do wish that for them.

10

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Imagine if Swift had a crisis of conscience and decided to do good with all her money instead of being a scummy resource hoarder.

No bread , all circuses

I've been saying a variation for the past year or a bit longer "Circuses are cheap, bread is expensive"
That's why we have so much entertaiment, but no housing.

11
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Except the circuses AREN'T cheap anymore either, what with the likes of Ticketmaster/Live Nation making it so a concert ticket costs as much as a car and the NFL's only goal being to maximize the profits of the team owners.

Just to use the examples directly related to the billionaire and multimillionaire depicted.

7

Yeah, you're right. I'm talking more about the clown shows in the news and political systems. Although a netflix subscription or a phone plan is a lot cheaper than a mortgage, and the boomers love to say that the computers and internet are why we can't have houses.

Watching this idiot lipsync after flying in to a concert you paid a month's wage for is a fucking insult.

3
lemmy.world

This is exactly how i kiss as well. I've never understood why ppl purse their lips (you look like a duck!) . For me, it's always been closed mouth, lips tight, and aiming for the mustache, so our lips dont actually meet and my mouth never looks weird for the cameras.

Can you imagine the absolute clusterfuck if you were in the security line at the same time as Taylor Swift?

1

distraction of the masses from politics, a tale as old as time. people are too invested in sports/celebreties often are very ignorant of the policies/politics around them, and they dont realize this just a distraction from Class issues.

7

The first I heard of Swift's engagement was reporters asking Trump to react, cause every fucking thing is about Trump

7
lemmy.world

What I find hilariously, self-centered and tone deaf, funny is they announced the engagement on a day when across the NFL players were getting cut and losing their jobs across the league on cut down day.

40 of Kelsy's team mates lost their jobs on that day. But I suppose overshadowing that got the NFL more clicks and eyeballs.

7

thats just the business of the league not everybody is good enough to make a team and nobody likes cutting players

2
lemmy.world

Everyone should really read ALL of this image. The headline obviously resonates with a ton of people, but there is a bigger message here that people need to engage with.

I don’t know if this is OC from the author or not, but this is genuinely brilliant.

4

I’m 44 and this is actually stone cold sober reality but have a day friend.

8

Who is on the cover here? I dont follow celebrities.

Edit: comments mention Taylor swift and some dude named kelly

4

I only know this because he's from my area and still does charity work in the area, Travis Kelce. Honestly I couldn't care less about celebrity lives, but from what I've seen in local press he does seem to be a good guy.

If we ban private jets, billionaires will just buy every seat on the commercial jet. This will be even more inefficient fuel wise, and worse for the environment overall.

Don't ban private jets. Ban billionaires.

There is an African tribe that picks the wealthiest member of the tribe to take care of everyone until they are broke. They do this willingly because after they spend all their money the tribe takes care of them. They will never need a place to stay because anyone would host them. They don't need food or clothing because anyone would give them whatever they need.

We need reset like this. A way to make wealth accumulation a positive thing.

No, I remember reading it. There is a lot of niche knowledge you cannot find on the Internet easily.

There are a lot of African traditions around gift giving (like potlatch) and redistribution of wealth as well as concepts of collective wealth (Ubuntu). Here is an article that talks about it, but does not mention the specific tribe I was thinking about. https://www.sociostudies.org/journal/articles/3600660/

1
RaivoKullireply
sopuli.xyz

With the article being rather long, does it mention the particular tradition talked about here? I don't doubt you've read it, I am just skeptical if it is a real tradition. And it's hard to gauge that with no info

1

It does talk about leaders not owning their wealth as it was owned collectively by the tribe. No, it does not mention this specific tribe. I can't find my anthro book either.

I could have remembered it wrong. I spent some more time poking around the Internet this morning about chiefdoms. I still couldn't find the specific tribe, but I learned some other interesting things.

There does seem to be some romanticizing small groups and the concept of tribal communism. So there is definitely something to support your skepticism.

2

It has to be a solution that benefits both parties, but I also recognize that one party is giving up something tangible.

They have to be compensated in some real way. That is why I propose make a wish for the ultra wealthy. We pick an obscenely rich person, take 99% of what they own, and give them the one thing money can't buy. A real wish that can be anything humans can reasonably provide.

2

then they'll bring along their security escort.

i don't care about it but i also find the air of superiority from people who boast about not caring about this to be worse than actually caring about it. everyone cares about stupid shit. people just talk about this because it's more demographically aligned with women. there's disproportionate hate towards things women tend to like because we're taught from childhood that it's uncool.

guarantee most of the people shitting on it here either mald about some ladder they're unhealthily trying to climb, or have a pokemon card collection, or treat that one movie they found to be super cool as their bible or some shit.

let people enjoy what they like. don't act you only care about the environment and world hunger.

6

because society pushes women to like these things under social pressure. it's kind of gross. there's nothing wrong with things women like, but this is manufactured. But hey, better than MAGA's worshipping drump.

But at the same time, don't obsess over a bunch of shit you can't change. The doom and gloom is mostly there to sell you shit anyway. Unhappy people spend more.

You can't fix it. It's not your job. Unless you want it to be your job by running for government, just vote appropriately for people that might help fix it. That's your little bit done.

Live your life. Go for a bike ride. Knock one out.

  1. Let people be happy about something. this is not helping anyone.

  2. if there is ONE person on the planet who would by popular vote be allowed to have a private jet, it's TayTay.

  3. Gossip was and is a part of human nature, denying it makes no friends for your cause. Don't call it bullshit, just because you don't care.

put a story of palestinian/israleli couple on the fake front page.

No! People need to get their heads out of their ass and focus on what is important.

It is right and just to hate on people who only speak up when the topic is useless drivel. They should be ashamed of their inaction and their complacency is disgusting.

5
lemmy.world

I think we're at a point where we can all agree that having interests beyond what's serious and exigent is healthy and reasonable. Now we need to get past the idea that not liking something that's popular (like sports and entertainment) makes you better than people who do. It doesn't make you better.

People who like Taylor and Travis and want them to do well are not automatically complacent in other areas of their lives. They don't have their heads up their asses for this reason. They have nothing to be ashamed of, talking about topics that, in your opinion, are useless drivel. Especially here, on the internet.

3

My grievances come from the fact that there’s no counterweight. Posting this type of thing is not inherently bad, but it’s all these people ever post.

I agree, people can enjoy things I don’t enjoy! But by exclusively posting vapid content, they are diluting the content pool and drowning out what is important.

Your inaction is your admission of acceptance.

0
lemmy.world

I really don't think you're being fair. I was in chanology in Clearwater, Arab Spring in Rabat, the second Penguin Revolution in Santiago de Chile, and countless major demonstrations in support of worker rights and LGBT community issues all over the world. When I come on the internet (as I've done since 1994), I don't want to endlessly talk about politics with the normies here. I want to talk about normie topics like cooking, cats, sports, and Taylor Swift. I save my outrage for real world actions.

According to you, I'm practicing an attitude of acceptance with regard to the state of the world because that's all you see and hear from me. What do you think that says about your worldview and your outlook on people?

2

You’re right, it is unfair of me to write these people off. Slacktivism is no substitute for real activism.

It’s just disheartening, weird, and scary seeing everyone repost the same instagram post like little worker bees.

And personally, I don’t think these people are doing anything behind the scenes to push for change. I suppose I’m just cynical.

2

Yeah, I don't mind propaganda, just don't listen.

That's a joke, in case it was not obvious.

4

Baby on board. That was her plan all along in her "grooming" this guy pun intended. Which is fine. Just saying it was obvious from the get go. She has more money than Gos and the only thing she doesn't have is a baby.
