Is this what having a strong social safety net looks like where you don't risk losing your job and being homeless and destitute for taking a moral stand?

34

No. The "benefits system" or "safety net" or whatever is really quite basic and not fit for supporting a modern family, contrary to what the Daily Fail would have people believe. Losing a job is devastating financially and emotionally, as it would be elsewhere. The main positive is healthcare is still free regardless of whether you're drawing a giro or £250k a year.

It still takes massive balls to stand together like that and fuck him off. Good effort.

21

You don't risk losing your job because your boss isn't an immoral shill for some capitalist corporation, so he's actually in on the protest and thus won't fire you.

Solidarity (and also labour laws Europe has less fire at will policies)

8

It's likely more down to social cohesion. Smaller villages all know each other (or at least passingly aware). They also don't have a huge pool of workers to draw upon.

If all your staff agree it's an issue, then finding replacement staff won't be trivial. Also, a large chunk of your customer base likely agrees. Finally, a small pub is unlikely to be run by a big shot CEO. They will have a lot more empathy than the average middle manager.

And the American Secret Service knocking on people’s doors and asking about their Facebook profiles

Fuck that entirely

An appropriate acronym: American Secret Service = ass

lemmy.world

oh yeah, if some other country's secret service knocked on my door asking questions, i'd ask them to sit down (outside), serve them drinks, be polite, and laugh in their faces.

15
feddit.nl

Then they put coke on the plate of drinks and arrest you for having illegal drugs.

Best thing is always just to ignore them until they go away. Never answer the door.

The jurisdiction of there being more of them than there are of you, and probably some form of restraints.

5

where did you get your law degree because that is not how diplomatic immunity works. it does not extend to the goons nor their spouses no matter how much Anna Sacoolas screeches

Yeah I bet they'd shoot at federal agents lol

2

you miss the defining point of your argument, ones from a different country trying to arrest someone, and yes, some of them have done time for that.

Another country's secret service can't and doesn't arrest people for coke, wtf are you on about

Residents in Charlbury and the tiny hamlet of Dean, where the manor house is situated, quickly grew weary of Vance and his entourage of vehicles and Secret Service agents.

Wow, overzealous much? No one wants to kill Vance, what's the point!? 😂 He's like wasps or mosquitoes, people just want him to go away...

The only way JD belongs in a pub, is if his head is mounted on a wall as a conversation piece. "...so we rounded up the bastards, and introduced them to French cutlery..."

22

I imagine any of these assholes can't eat out anywhere. It's probably why they eat so much fast food from drive throughs.

James Donald Bowman is the epitome of a bellend and an insult to humanity.

And I will deadname him in every thread till the day he dies.

The vice president had reportedly attempted to dine at The Bull in Charlbury, Oxfordshire, an early 16th-century countryside pub with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a prestigious award from the Michelin Guide that highlights restaurants offering excellent food at moderate prices.

“It’s been the talk of the village-it’s the most exciting thing that’s happened here for a very long time,” one local told British tabloid The Sun of Harris’s visit to the venue, where a steak will set diners back $98.

Uh...

If you look at the image of the menu in the article, most of the stuff costs far less than that. It's a bit deceptive to mention it the way they did.

and some steak costs $300… what’s your point? £98 for a steak isn’t ridiculous… there’s a £26 pie there too and all their other prices are reasonable: i assume it’s just a really good cut

Being a dipshit is not a protected class.

It's wrong to turn people away based on things they can't change. Race, gender, sexuality

It's completely okay to turn someone away for their shit beliefs. I will tolerate you being a shit person. I will not be nice to you.

23

I'm not a tolerant person either. I'm intolerant of intolerance. I will fight for tolerance of marginalized individuals but I won't stand for marginalizing anybody... Except those who marginalize people for who they are.

Intolerant people like Vance have opted out of the social contract, so they don't get the benefit of tolerance.

I hope this happens to him every day for the rest of his life. Project 2025 and dark enlightenment are pure evil. This man has no soul and deserves no peace.

How do you feel about Putin having an arrest warrant out for him by the ICC for his warcrimes for his illegal war of aggression in Ukraine and the countless crimes against humanity like trafficking Ukrainian children?

Or perhaps you can't discuss it, for fear of accidentally falling out of a window? ;>

3

I think what Russia is doing to Ukraine is not only horrible but it’s also straight up war crimes.

I think they should start up the courthouses in Nuremberg to handle both Russia’s and Israel’s crimes.

And Putin, personally?

Is he "just as bad as other world leaders", or perhaps we can admit Zelensky is nowhere near the immorality and criminality of Putler. Or, would you disagree?
