While this is alarming, it seems like such an obvious attempt to distract us from the people in Texas who died from the Republican party's inaction. As well as the revelation that the Epstein suicide video was edited

139
sh.itjust.works

Well there's and entire minute missing, and the video was released with Adobe Premiere metadata....

66
sh.itjust.works

It matters because that missing minute is when he actually died. One minute he's alive, the next he's dead.

Ah the only explanation is you're on the video killing Epstein. Have fun in prison why does the truth matter?

-2

I’m saying if the video isn’t even of his cell, what’s the point of the video and if it’s edit? Who cares about some random cell?

5

If it's a legitimate threat, it's not a distraction. It's called "flooding the zone" and it's intentional, but it's mean to overwhelm us in general with the sheer amount of bullshit he spews.

But don't make the mistake that this is a distraction. He's opening a path to strip anyone he dislikes of citizenship and exile them to a foreign death camp. This is deadly serious and should not be ignored.

Honestly?

I hope he tries

She wealthy and still a household name. She can pay to fight, it would make it undeniable he's abusing power.

And she literally doesn't even live in this country. Absolutely zero danger at all, and she was already saying she might not come back.

The question is what kind of stupidity that would even be. He's already done so many things that if anyone else has even tried, they'd have shot themselves in the foot.

5

The US is one of the only countries that still requires citizens living overseas to file and pay taxes. It’d be great if he further crippled the US war machine this way.

25
lemmy.world

That gets thrown around all the time...

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-earned-income-exclusion

But the exception to it is pretty rational and covers most people.

It's like how billionaires convince poor people that can't afford to retire that a tax only 2% of people will ever pay on inheritance is a pressing issue and society doesn't deserve their cut.of problematic levels of generational wealth.

Like, do you understand how ripe this is for manipulation by the wealthy to turn public opinion against the wealthiest few who pay these taxes?

C'mon man...

It's 2025, we need to learn to recognize this shit on our own, misinformation is going to keep getting worse.

Quick edit:

For clarity, you do still need to file federal taxes every year, even though you have zero withholdings and still owe $0.

But people get in trouble for not filing, same as people who live in Alaska. There's no debt for missed payments, but there may be fines/consequences anyways

13

There's a ton of intricacies to it though, for example if you live in Canada you can't invest in one of the two retirement accounts without paying some pretty hefty fees. Those fees don't affect the rich who can easily pay it off, they only affect small times personal finance investing. Primary residence are only excluded for a relatively small amount (might be enough if you live in a small town, forget it if you live in a major metropolitan area past a small one bedroom condo), and the division with a partner isn't 50/50 like it is in Canada so your Canadian partner potentially looses a ton of money. Increases the cost of accountants and personal finance advisors by like three folds. Etc, etc...

I get that trying to get rich people to not use tax heavens is good. But this affects regular people who haven't lived in the country for years, decades, as well as their non American families.

I know this first hand, and second hand, as my immediate and extended family is all sort of cross border intertwined. It's a real pain in the ass.

5
lemmy.world

I do know...

What's weird is you didn't even click the link or even seem to read my comment:

If you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien of the United States and you live abroad, you are taxed on your worldwide income. However, you may qualify to exclude your foreign earnings from income up to an amount that is adjusted annually for inflation ($107,600 for 2020, $108,700 for 2021, $112,000 for 2022, and $120,000 for 2023). In addition, you can exclude or deduct certain foreign housing amounts.

America has bigger problems than migrant workers in other countries who make well North of six figures.

You're not getting any pity from the average American over "filing fees" when you can do that shit on TurboTax.

-5

You still need to file... It's complex as shit. It's not an easy filing with turbo tax when you have a company, partners who are not dual citizens etc. I'm by no means rich but I shouldn't have to file taxes where I'm not residing. And if I wanted to get rid of my citizenship it's also expensive and you have to have filed for the past 7 years. It's not about pity. It's about what is ethical. And being the only country to do this it isn't ethical.

9
lemmy.zip

Do you know if there are actual penalties for not filing? Most of what I've seen says that you have to pay a fine based on what you owe, but if you owe $0 they don't charge you for it. Some years I don't get around to filing because it's a little complicated and I'm pretty lazy about it. I always file the foreign bank declaration though because there's heavy financial penalties for not doing that.

1

I've known multiple people who lost federal security clearances for not filing their taxes for an extended period because they didn't owe anything.

But as far as I know they've never been fined or had charges pressed.

Very niche concern, but I don't 100% know all the scenarios, so it's best for people to find out for themselves about their own specific situation

2

Nah. SCOTUS will never let that happen. Rendition him and his ICE goons to countries like Venezuela. He and his ICE gestapo will have caused the deaths of countless Venezuelan citizens. They're fully within their legal rights to charge him and his agents with crimes against humanity. If Trump can rendition innocent people to third party countries, we sure as hell can extradite the guilty to face trial. Don't even try to use the US justice system, not while SCOTUS is so openly corrupt. Just ship all these bastards off to the home countries of their victims. Let them do with them as they please.

Three options:

  1. Go to every embassy or consulate you can and try to get a visa
  2. Live illegally in another country
  3. End up in a concentration camp
27

You know, I always thought "concentration camp" seemed too friendly of a name.

They're not concentrating them. They're slowly killing them. They're death camps.

14

For her specifically she's trying to get EU /Irish citizenship through her mother's citizenship (I think).

But yeah your question stands. I read a post a long time ago about taking citizenship away from terrorists and one guy posted that's really not how it should work. I'm not as well versed as he was but it was basically: The Justice department deals with crimes and punishment, citizenship is just plain membership to a country. If you don't have citizenship to any country it's just like you don't exist in paperwork terms. It doesn't line up with what the justice system is supposed to do.

Of course Trump just wants to kick people out. So he'll "negotiate" for random countries to take in people (even not their citizens) or he'll slap tariffs on them. This is also what asylum is supposed to be for.

4

This is what I will go to war to fight. I have been genetically on this continent since the 1630’s. Family fought in the French Indian war and Revolution and all the way up to Vietnam. Stripping anyone he dislikes of citizenship and sending them to a death camp in El Salvador is important. It's one of the most important things happening right now. He's literally paving a legal path to kill anyone he wants.

3

Two different things. So far, stripping of citizenship hasn't happened yet and doubtful he could do it to Rosie O'Donnell. It is a distraction from the deportations without due process, warrantless and masked/un-uniformed arrests, even the slow FEMA response in Texas. Focus on what has happened, not the vitriol and threats he makes.

-2

I know this shitty dollar store Grover Cleveland likes to hold onto a grudge, but damn!

3

We need to rendition Trump to Venezuela or other applicable country. They can then try him for all the deaths of their citizens he's caused in his numerous concentration camps. SCOTUS can take its presidential immunity ruling and boof it up Kavanaugh's ass. If we can't try him and all his ICE goons here, then we can send them all somewhere where they can be tried. Trump is sending innocent people to random countries. No reason we can't do the same with mass murderers.

Yeah. Right now there's a fair amount of support for him, disorganization among the opposition, and disaffection after nearly a decade of resistance to him alongside the weakness of the opposition from the dems. Currently what I'm seeing is a fall back to coalition building, propaganda, and other fights to create a popular front from which to oppose.

Left wing violence at this point needs to be sparing and calculated, exclusively where no other option is available to protect people. It's bad optics and prevents us from building a broad opposition. We also need to quit the level of infighting we've been up to and speak to ordinary and disinterested people where they are, because a lot of them basically tune out at the idea of politics unless it's their side (if they have one).

Add friction to their operations. Make their safe spaces less safe. Like they used to burn empty churches at night. Let them know fear.

Break assets. Don't harm people.

5

Even property damage needs to be calculated. Are you hindering their ability to harm people or are you letting out your anger while risking people who are uncomfortable with the realities of the right and their perception of the left.

The fascists learned to hide their power level, to disavow their terrorism, to practice whataboutism, and to play their roles as reasonable people who have been unfairly attacked.

Mass property damage will get perpetrators killed while alienating those who are tuned out. Add friction for certain when it comes to the ability to do harm. But seriously this is a propaganda war of trying to claim the other side is more radical and worse for the people who just want to grill and we're fucking losing. You will do a lot more good by protesting and humanizing targeted groups and talking to your apolitical uncle about how this isn't what America is supposed to be than you will by burning an empty RNC building.

Should you be training in a militia? Probably. But keep an eye out for agents provocateur and focus on making sure your people are controlled, stable, and would prefer a non-violent resolution. You will do a lot more good handing out food than marching with guns or burning something down.

Should I, an average citizen in the Midwest, buy a bunch of guns, bombs, whatever, and just go assassinate the president of the US, arguably the best protected individual in the world? Let's say that through some miracle I do that, then what? Couch fucker takes the reigns reins, SCOTUS continues to enable fascism, and Congress is still fascist controlled. Am I supposed to just keep popping off people through the line of succession and also take out at least two supreme court justices, a handful of house members and a couple senators?

We can resist, protest, and fight back against this, but it's not something that has a quick solution. It's us citizens vs the US government, Russia, many State level governments, billionaires, and by proxy a huge disinformation and propaganda campaign.

I'm at the point where I think we need to dissolve the United States entirely. The Constitution you learned about in school no longer exists. Congress is as ineffectual and cowed as the Senate during the Roman Empire. SCOTUS has completely abandoned the Constitution, but we all still pretend that its rulings are worth even reading, let alone following. The president is completely ineligible for office due to taking foreign bribes and leading a rebellion. SCOTUS believes sex discrimination isn't sex discrimination. And the presidency's powers have been expanded through emergency power after emergency power. And entire departments, which Congress only created because they were intended to operate independent of the president, now have been completely supplicated due to rulings by a corrupt Supreme Court.

We are caught in a cycle of ever-elevating abuse and violation of norms. Republicans are always the first one to break norms, but once the precedent is set, Democrats adopt it to. At this point, we're basically electing a national dictator every four years; the core principle of the Constitution - separation of powers, no longer exist. And it's a coin toss whether we'll even have elections in 2028.

I'm sorry, but what are we even doing here? We have two parties that are fighting every four years for control of the national dictatorship. This has made the stakes of every election overwhelming. And both sides are thoroughly convinced of the irredeemable wickedness of the other. Why are we still doing this? We have options.

Government is meant to serve the people. The people are not meant to serve the government. If a government no longer serves the needs of the people, then that government, Constitution, or entire nation can simply be dissolved.

It's time for a peaceful dissolution of the United States. Grant all 50 states independence, let them come back together into whatever new nation or nations they wish to form. Let them write a new Constitution or Constitutions based on the compromises of our own time, not those of 250 years ago. Yes, there would be negotiations that need to happen, but that's happened through countless other national breakups.

And if you think the Constitution precludes this, you haven't been paying attention. There is a very simple way to end the union forever. Someone just needs to run for president on that platform. SCOTUS has given the presidency near dictatorial control over everything in the executive branch. Someone could run for president on the following platform:

"I will be the last president of the United States. Elect me, and I will grant all 50 states full independence. I will fire every single federal employee. I will not collect any taxes. I'll surrender control of military forces to the states. I will not resist any attempts by states to withdraw from the Union. In fact, through these actions I will force them to do so. If Congress or the Supreme Court object, I will ignore them. I will have a clear political mandate to dissolve this failed union. And those voices that want to deny the American people their future will simply be ignored."

That's literally all it would take. Congress and SCOTUS can piss and moan all they want. They'll find themselves meeting in abandoned buildings with no electricity and no one guarding the doors. They can pass whatever silly resolutions or rulings they want; they'll be pissing into the wind. In the meanwhile power will be completely dissolved to the states, and they'll be working with each other to form new regional nations and write new Constitutions for them. Once the back of the existing federal government is broken in this way, there will be no putting it back together.

Our nation was built by human beings for the service of human beings. If we find that this nation is no longer serving the needs of the people, it can simply be peacefully dissolved. If a president were elected on platform of openly promising to do this? They would have such a political mandate that there would be no stopping them.

There are real Americans that own guns as well, who love to put a stop to this shit, but it's hard to fund, plan, and execute a mission to uphold the Constitution when the enemy literally controls most every armed agency in the country, and a massive spying apparatus.
