"Honey? Where did you put the hide-a-key the last time I locked myself out of the house?"

Literally realized, "how will I put this stuff in the car in order to have my hands free to grab the keys if I don't have the keys" and turned around just in time to see the door fully closed.

And I always turn the latch to lock itself when I step outside, or I'd never remember to lock the door.

Thank goodness for the hide-a-key with a house key stuck in the filth on the underside of my car.

I won't lock a door, any door, unless the key to unlock it is in my hand currently. Learned my lesson.

This is the reason I'm one of those weirdos that clips a key carabiner to my belt. My key fob died so I always lock the car from inside while getting out, but if no keys... So I always did the belt slap while getting out. If it jingled, good to go.

Ever since getting a carabiner I've lost my keys so much less and now I'm realizing this is much more ADHD than I thought...

Yep keys clipped, wallet right hoodie pocket, if they aren't there they don't exist anymore.

This is why the only lock on my front door is a deadbolt. If you're not holding the key, you can't lock the door as you leave.

That, and because my doors need to lock themselves automatically because I can't remember to lock them myself even when I'm home.

People lock their houses before going out of the actual house? WTF? A deadbolt is the only real way to lock a front door, and is often the only way it's locked.

A deadbolt is more secure than the lock on the doorknob, but both can be picked or broken. Lots of homes have both locks on the front door, and in a lot of areas just the doorknob lock is secure enough if you're leaving for a couple hours in the middle of the day.

I grew up being told to lock the deadbolt any time the house was left empty. Seems like common sense to me, but I suppose I didn't grow up normal.

A deadbolt is great, but it's easier to break a window than pick even a bad lock. If you don't live in a neighborhood where everyone has bars over their windows, you probably don't need to keep your deadbolt locked all the time.

It's repetition

For about ten years I locked myself out of the house on average about once a year, sometimes more.

Now, grabbing the keys on my way out is automatic ... I physically can't leave without thinking of the house key anymore.

And even if I did .... I have a back up key in my wallet .... and a hidden key on my garage ... and a key in a lockbox under the porch .... and one in my truck ... and probably a few more I forgot about on my property somewhere.

Funny thing is .... once I started hiding back up keys all over the place, I stopped locking myself out of the house.

nice house you have there

About six months of the year, you need a shovel to get through the snow and ice to find the keys

I have a compulsion to check my left pocket before closing the door, if there intentionally is no key in my pocket I need multiple tries to close the front door.

Locksmith here, thank you for your business.

Side note: there is nothing more embarrassing than having to call another locksmith because you're locked out of your van that has all of the tools necessary to break into a van. I now carry a door key in my wallet. I've used it three times so far this year

I have no idea if this helps but every single time a locksmith has to come out to save me, I offer them as much as they care to carry out of my giant bucket of candy.

I would 100% give you a friend's and family discount if I were offered enough candy lol

You reached the end
