I’m not joking when I say that to a lot of MAGA this is a suit if you’re famous for country or rock music, and they wouldn’t find it inappropriate for him to show up to a formal event like this just because of that. That’s just how music stars are to them.

But the fact there’s such widespread disagreement shows there’s no consensus on what constitutes formal wear for a White House visit and no strong culture of expecting all invited guests to adhere to it, which shows what a disgraceful excuse it was to use that to insult Zelenskyy. Who, IIRC, hasn’t been wearing suits since the beginning of the war in part as a statement about his commitment to focusing on the war.
