Moved away from Proton since their CEO couldn't keep his mouth shut.

Migrated to migadu.com, works nicely.

He has on several occasions offered praise to the Trump Republican Party. He quote tweeted a post from Truth Social where Trump announced his nominee for Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice:

Great pick by @realDonaldTrump. 10 years ago, Republicans were the party of big business and Dems stood for the little guys, but today the tables have completely turned. People forget that the current antitrust actions against Big Tech were started under the first Trump admin.

When the response to this tweet was negative, the official Reddit account doubled-down:

Here is our official response, also available on the Mastodon post in the screenshot:

Corporate capture of Dems is real. In 2022, we campaigned extensively in the US for anti-trust legislation.

Two bills were ready, with bipartisan support. Chuck Schumer (who coincidentally has two daughters working as big tech lobbyists) refused to bring the bills for a vote.

At a 2024 event covering antitrust remedies, out of all the invited senators, just a single one showed up - JD Vance.

By working on the front lines of many policy issues, we have seen the shift between Dems and Republicans over the past decade first hand.

Dems had a choice between the progressive wing (Bernie Sanders, etc), versus corporate Dems, but in the end money won and constituents lost.

Until corporate Dems are thrown out, the reality is that Republicans are more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses.

This post was then deleted with Yen claiming it was a "miscommunication" and pledging that Proton would stop offering its political opinions.

It'sucks that he's cheering trump but the things he says about democrats are entirely plausible... I mean... would anyone be surprised that politicians are corrupt regardless of the party?

3

He doesn't say that, he says Trump's party cares about the little people over big corporations, even when they're the ones putting people on places of power for huge bribes from their big corporations while deporting the little people.

I'm very happy with Proton.

Switched to Tuta and bought a domain. It's been great so far. I can create an email alias with this domain for each service I use. Also have a proton free account but not sure yet what I will use it for (it was for testing before). I also created a disroot account since I really like what they are doing.

17

I'm also using Tuta. Very user friendly. I also have a StartMail account. Kindly depending which one I want to keep using. Maybe Tuta for personal things and my StartMail mail address for subscriptions and business related.

I did the same thing, switched to tuta and bought my own domain. They had put together a video tutorial on how to fill out the needed values to use the custom domain. It was super easy and I am very happy with this new setup.

3

Exactly, that video made it all very simple and helped convincing me

1

I've been using it for a couple of years now, quite happy with it too.

I've been using mailbox.org since a while. Reliable and 12€ per year, can't really complain. Easy domain name too

The reason I didn't go with mailbox is that they recycle your email address after 90 days. So if you decide to leave or didn't pay for 30 days, 3 months lager someone can make a new emailaddress under your old name.

Ive switched to Proton. Ofc only found out about their CEO after switching, but the have my trust for one. Also really enjoying their other services (password manager, VPN, Drive). Switched to a Duo subscription together with my brother. Quite content so far

I switched to Proton as well, on a Duo subscription together with my boyfriend.
I also took the opportunity to set up my own email domain, so I can be more mobile with my choice in mail provider.

Well, follow up then, which provider did you choose that is maybe also European? And something where I maybe don't need to attach my name to the registration of the domain? Not sure that is unrealistic, I just don't like to have my name publicly shown in some registry when someone would lookup my domain.

1

The DNS provider I went with is Vimexx.nl

I already had a .nl domain with them, and just needed another more professional sounding domain for my email (that i could realistically use on my resume)

I think both the .nl and .net domains require being registered to a person?

1

Mailbox.org for me

I've migrated some stuff but lots still to update.

I'm on the lowest tier and only have the 3 aliases, I think it may be worth using multiple aliases from what I keep reading online, so may need to upgrade tier before I migrate more accounts.

12

Tuta has been great.

Proton choked down my chargeback after they said some unwarranted nice things about US republicans.

11

I've had a proton account since 2016 but be er really used it much. I am now using it as my main account and have mothballed Gmail but will eventually delete Google altogether.

10

I have gone one step further and started a an email provider. Hosted in Frankfurt, backup in Amsterdam.

Custom domain Webmail, IMAP, pop, all with TLS obviously Calendar, tasks, contacts sync all in one, all Foss solutions. Anti spam, anti virus

Haven't figured out how to sell that yet, or at what price, but I'm working on that. XD

10
aussie.zone

Proton. Because i know how to read, and people had twisted the CEOs words completely beyond what was written. Reading ‘and’ comprehension folks. Try to build both skills.

10

Anyone who has a different opinion than mine is necessarily an idiot

6
ttrpg.network

That's not the right mindset, but he really did say positive things that were simply not true about Trump's party in the wake of current-ish events.

2

The problem is, the person saying "these guys are nazis" could be simply lying.

A good example is Putin funding nazis everywhere in ex-USSR since around 2005, then managing to get Europeans to think the Ukrainian freedom movement was somehow a nazi movement even though the prevalence of right-wing extremism was growing until 2014 just like in the Russia and started decreasing in 2014, while it kept rising in the Russia and Russia-controlled areas such as Crimea.

If the Russia was to gain control over Ukraine, the prevalence of right wing extremist attacks would start growing again like it did until 2014. And yet, a lot of Europeans, especially in Germany, are opposing Ukraine because of the "these guys are nazis, nazis=bad mindset. Nazis are bad. It's just important to understand that someone accusing someone of being a nazi doesn't mean that the someone actually is a nazi.

The mindset has caused large parts of Ukraine to fall under circumstances that cause there to be more fascism. Anti-fascism has ended up promoting fascism in this case.

I have not read about what Proton's owners have said and will delve into that now. But my experience, having lived in Ukraine in 2015 and 2016 and in Germany between 2008 and 2010 (and still having good friends there), is that many are eager to jump on a bandwagon of lynching an accused nazi, even if the accuser himself is a nazi and the accused is not.

It is ugly seeing precisely those who would be needed for fighting fascism work as errand boys for fascists.

Been in the proton ecosystem for 5 years, never leaving

Tuta has been cool. Not sure if I want to commit yet though. Hate that can't use thunderbird with a free-account but I am considering just getting a paid account.

7

Oh shit, I thought it was mentioned that it's possible with a paid account... God damnit. Didn't fully read their pricing page since I wasn't sure if I'll commit.

Honestly that's kind of a deal breaker for me when thinking about paying for an email service. I need other, nonpersonal email accounts that are from various providers and I love that I can have them all in thunderbird.

Thankfully I didn't yet do much with the email and was using it for new registrations.

2

mailbox.org I still have iCloud as second mail, while I tried to exclude Gmail as much a I could, but I cannot delete it entirely yet. Right know about 90% of all the email are on Mailbox.

I've set up my Proton mail but haven't moved stuff over yet. Any good alternatives to Google Authenticator?

5

I use Aegis, an open source alternative that works just like Google and Microsoft Authenticator.

15

I use 2FAs. It's open-source but it seems to be based in Nevada.. Otherwise great app.

3

IDK what Google Authenticator does, but I just use KeepassXC's TOTP feature for my 2FA.

3

Proton pass has this functionality. You can also give it a separate password so if someone gets access to your proton email they can't get into pass

2

You can use any OTP App or device of your choosing. TOTP is a simple standard for 2FA which is why nobody necessarily needs Google or Microsoft Authenticator.

There is Aegis, FreeOTP, OTPManager (iOS/macOS) and many others. Some Password Managers like 1Password, BitWarden and KeepassXC also support OTP.

Did not need to switch as I've been using my own domain names (French registrar with French and/or German hostings) since I created my first website... back when quite a few of you reading this today were not even born yet. No, that does not mean I'm that old. Absolutely not :p

I also have a proton and a tuta account (and @ mailbox.org one), just in case someone prefers a more privacy-friendly email than my non-encrypted domain emails, and since neither tuta or Proton are compatible when exchanging encrypted emails, I have both. That being said, I seldom use them: most people simply don't care about privacy.

I use(d to use) gmail for all crappy online stuff I don't care much about losing access to. I will probably end up getting rid of it entirely but, to me at least, even though I know it's possible to do it without a YT account, that would also mean quit watching YT, which is something I still appreciate doing.

Please tell me it had a visitor counter on the front page and blinkies in the footer?

On that note, Neocities is still alive and the websites there remind me of the walkman and pez dispenser I had, love it!

Please tell me it had a visitor counter on the front page and blinkies in the footer?

:) (Nodding knowingly, kids have no idea these days)

But no it did not had these, not in the early days at least. Back then, it was already something for young (and ignorant me) me to be able to display text and put an image... thumb-sized, because dial-up Internet was slow and anything but cheap. A little later, I started (over)using gif like many, also learning to create my own (I'd rather not remember any of my 'creations' :p). But I never was obsessed with that. The moment I fell in love with my website, wanting to make it even more uniquely mine, is when I first heard about and tried CSS. That came later for me, but I could not tell how much.

It was a clumsy learning process, all done by hand through trial and (soooo many) errors, but that was mind blowing. I madly fell in love with CSS... Flash forward quite a few years later, when they finally managed to make me run away from the complex beast they had turned CSS into, and even steer away from the idea of handwriting my own website like I had been doing for all those years.

On that note, Neocities is still alive and the websites there remind me of the walkman and pez dispenser I had, love it!

Thx for the link!

I remember neocities. A bit like I remember Lycos and even more fondly remember my very first Walkman (Sony's very first model, my uncle brought me back from Japan back then). I have been using that poor thing for countless years. It was beaten to death, paint was gone in so many spots there was not much left to be read on it but it worked well. I loved it. I often listened to cassettes on that beaten up Walkman while I was trying my hands at writing HTML and CSS up until years later when it died of one last fall on the ground. No matter how silly that is, I was sad losing it. If I remember well, I also managed to get my hand on a compatible DC adapter, so it would eat that much batteries.

Disclaimer: I'm not that old.

edit: typos.

I've been with tuta using a custom domain for a couple years now. Started switching most my services away from Google et al for pro privacy reasons a long time ago. It just so happens that these kind of decisions end up with the same results as moving to EU based solutions.

I feel like for most people their email account is just somewhere their emails go. And trust me there are plenty of options out there. If Google Calendar etc is something that your missing, then look for a alternative calendar service rather than an email service.

4

I moved to notion. I think the CEO story is somewhat overblown. But I’m using custom domains in case I’m proven wrong, which will make it easy to switch if I have to.

4

Same here. Convinced my dad to do the same. Been using is for a while now though.

2
lemmy.world

I have been using the free Proton, but I'm very tempted by Mail+. Something just feels strange about paying for email after it being free for 20 years

3

I upgraded my free account to mailplus last year, still not really sure if i need any of the premium features but what convinced me in the end was the thought that the reason I am used to free email is because i chose to pay with my data. I trust proton they won't make money of my data, so i feel like i owe them money to keep my email working.

1

Infomaniak, such a great service for such a low price. Bought my own domain via them and the email hosting is free / just links with their plus plan.

1TB drive for 2 euros a month is a steal

2
lemmy.world

There's a world outside the US/European false dichotomy.

I've been with Fastmail since 2019 and you couldn't pay me to go elsewhere. 🤷‍♂️

2

Australian here happy with Runbox, from an european country that respects privacy, unlike the 5 eyes. Unfortunately Australia is not a good country to get a cloud service.

4

Onet, a Polish news website. I used it for my first ever e-mail and since then I have been using it kind of out of habit. Never felt a need to switch to something more robust.

Of course I have a gmail account too, but I use it mostly for things like logins and synchronization rather than for correspondence.

2
feddit.uk

Topic/question that I don't see commented on often: how are you guys finding the telling other people (verbally, out loud) about your email?

I feel I could tell someone "at proton dot com" without having to spell it but in the UK I feel any way I try to pronounce tuta is going to result in me having to say "at tango uniform tango alpha dot com" or otherwise people will misunderstand and send me about a million messages at tutta, toota, Tuter, twitter, doota, or even more creative spellings.

2

I bought a domain name and set it up on tuta to get an email address that I like. It was super easy to setup, tuta had created a video tutorial that showed how to setup a custom domain step by step.

2

My provider (Onet) is a known Polish news outlet so I don’t have such issues at home, but whenever I’m abroad I just spell it out: “oh-en-ee-tee”.

You can also change your email address to @pm.me which might be easier to say?

1

I used to be on Outlook. Two weeks ago I made accounts on Proton and Tuta, but didn‘t like the missing IMAP and SMTP on the free plans.

I then also made an account on web.de, but they don‘t support the plus notation for dynamic addresses ([email protected]). So in the end I payed the 12€ for a year of mailbox.org and have been extremely happy with it!

Switched to proton, cancelled o365 subscription.

I want to do this so bad. Issue is they don't offer enough storage for me. I need like 3 tb for photos and videos. Hope they offer add-ons to make that a possibility

1

For storage, I was already self hosting Nextcloud, so I mainly needed to switch my mail provider ! Self hosting mail servers is too much of a hassle

3

Proton, but I don’t think they can justify their monthly price for «premium» features.

1

Same here, some features kinda pointless. Like why would I ever need 10 email addresses on one account?

1

I've been using KolabNow for these past few years. Swiss-based with a focus on privacy. No issues, really like it. I also have a personal e-mail address with my name, but that one I have with a local domain registrar.

1
feddit.org

I created a mailbox.org account. But so far I have only moved contacts and my calendar. I'm still a bit miffed that they don't support proper oauth/MFA. Guess that never got established as a standard for email :(

But otherwise it works great for what I need.

Off Gandi since they got bought and jacked up all prices a couple years ago. Galae.net (France) is working well.

1
lemmy.world

Cool to hear someone is using galae. I have considered them in the past. How is email deliverability?

1

So far so good! No correspondent has reported mail reaching their junk folder so far 🤞

1

Switched to Proton Duo just before the US shitshow started, still happy I did. So far mainly using it for mail, drive and calender, will be setting up VPN soon as well.

0

Looking for a good option but I can't convince myself any are good enough to switch. I've created trial/free accounts for all the services I can find but the webmail just isn't as good.
