This is my first comment, just joined during the weekend. It took about half a day to get used to the lower amount of stuff and the slower pace here. And I really like it! The quality of discourse here seems so much higher and with the lower amount of posts I find that I can take my time and not get overwhelmed. Should have joined years ago :-)
Welcome, glad to hear you like it!
Years ago, it was just a safe haven for half a dozen communists.
2 years ago it was already pretty well spread out IMO, that was just before the API fiasco. Now add some years before that and I'd say yeah, a much smaller community.
But even a couple years ago Lemmy was beginning to thrive.
Welcome to non-corporate reddit 🎉
i do miss my niche communities on reddit, maybe i'll start some here, other than that lemmy is a good alternative to replace the popular feed on reddit.
Welcome!
Yeah pretty much but weaning off reddit is good
Feel free to recreate your favourite and try to grow it here :).
[email protected] is a decent resource for that.
Also consider joining more general communities
[email protected] is a community for all Japanese RPGs for instance
Welcome ! Indeed, niche topics need a larger userbase, hopefully we'll get there over time
You can use the universal https://lemmyverse.net/ to see if your favourite communities exist.
sometimes they have different names.
you can also create any community you are missing. If you use the same name as the reddit community then people will be more likely to find it and contribute.
When I created a lemmy community (sub-lemmy) nearly 2 years ago on lemmy.world, I remember becoming the mod instantly.
Maybe I am mistaken, or maybe different instances have different policies.
did you create one? If you look in the sidebar does it say who is the mod?
Came over from Reddit as part of plan to divest from US-based products. Happy to be here, and plan to explore. Mainly lurked over on Reddit - hope to contribute more actively over here!
I almost never posted on Reddit. Partly because someone has usually already said something close to what I wanted to say. With the smaller community here I feel like I can make a unique contribution more often.
Yes, I know what you mean and would encourage you to share your perspective more - it will still be unique, even if it is similar to others.
Welcome!
Thank you :)
Not only Lemmy i also joined Mastodon lol. I find this expirience to be refreshing, maybe thats because this platform has less users or maybe because its not under someones control but i feel as if i moved from big, overpopulated city to a countryside. Its like breathing fresh air, i feel myself free, and i love reading comments here, they look like real conversations between humans. Although im not from European Union but im your neighbor from Ukraine and i totally support this movement or its better to call an idea, i dunno. I replaced a lot of stuff already but thats only the first step. Also im really glad to be here.
Welcome!
99.9% of the time I’m just lurking on Reddit, but here I‘m actually getting interested in commenting again. Feels „safer“ than the other place.
Welcome ! Come on [email protected] you'll find that the animator is very friendly and open to chat back.
It's true. I'll talk owl stuff all day! I've been trying extra hard this year to include plenty of non-US centric things too, even before my country went totally off the rails.
Welcome!
A few unwritten rules I've found useful over the last couple of years since moving to Lemmy :)
You forgot the beans and five days no shit
You're right, I did. Dammit.
Also consider discussing it on [email protected]
Ngl on reddit id feel the need to look through ppls post history, check their credibility, downvote/report everything I disagree with, it was a bad habit, somehow wasn't what got me banned (I did it for years), haven't felt the need to do that once here, not even close to that mindframe when seeing stuff here.
Reddits algorithim was favoring controversy hard, I swear it pushed stuff that would actively raise my blood pressure at me, then give me something id like for a second just to make me not close the app. I was getting all of my dopamine out of arguing, id just open that app mad ready to argue with my notifications.
A month into lemmy and I stopped expecting arguments in my notifications, I find opening this app to be a calming experience like Reddit was for me a decade ago.
I got Boost for
RedditLemmy back. The world is beautiful again! Now to find communities that I like... I'm a bit lost but I'll settle soon enough.
Welcome! [email protected] can help to find communities
Boost for Lemmy hasn't been updated in a year or so, you might want to try voyager app if things are not working correctly.
Aaaah... Too bad, I was so happy to get Boost back haha. I'll give Voyager a shot
Thanks for the heads up
Yay to all the fresh lemmings. Welcome welcome! Just don't be a dipshit please.
I like how Lemmy actually grew in size after i left it after the Reddit moderation problem of a couple years ago. All in all, it's all kind of overwhelming but maybe I'm too emotional.
Welcome in from the cold. We have hot cocoa and blankets.
Welcome!
They're called communities
Great, I've made myself right at home. As another user said I miss the smaller communities but it can only get better from here.
Welcome!
Make them and try to convince the members for the corresponding subreddits to join you :) And welcome!
I saw the post in r/Europe that pointed here. I'm loving it so far
Welcome!
A facebook friend who is transgender posted a list of alternate platforms to use instead of (ironically) Facebook, Google, Insta etc. And since I had recently been perma banned from reddit for twice quoting from The Godfather (I guess their algorithm hasn't seen it) and various djt related insults, I thought I'd give this a try.
Welcome in from the cold. We have hot cocoa and blankets.
I like it so far :) Bit confusing sometimes and I'm still trying to find communities that I like and are active.
I hope that many more make the switch from reddit, but I can also see why some people might find the Initial setup confusing or anoying. I think it just takes some time to get used to Lemmy, so I hope a lot of people try it out and stay
Welcome! This post might help https://lemmy.world/post/26409821
This is my third or fourth alt on Lemmy since joining. I love that I can stick to one account or change instances if I feel like it. It’s not too difficult to get used to! I’m getting a desktop app next.
I like that there’s an application process for each instance. That gives you a good idea of how the instance is managed and what to expect.
I love that I can get German news and interact with Germans and German language speakers. Or, in other words, I love that it’s not default centralized American.
It’s really cool seeing their instances next to everyone’s handle. There’s so much here! I feel a lot safer. I love that everyone is human.
I see @[email protected] everywhere. I have been here a day and I think I have upvoted them 15 times already. Haha
Well, welcome, that's a very nice comment!
You seems to like every right thing! Welcome abord!
Haven't checked Reddit much since creating this account. Thought I might use both but Lemmy is genuinely much better. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to visit the original instance from within voyager and how to make my feed more diverse. Currently it's very politics heavy and I don't wanna unsub from those communities but other stuff kinda gets burried.
I would use two accounts, one dedicated to non politics communities
[email protected] can help discover some of them
Top left of your feed, hit the arrow and at the top left you'll see the option to view only subscribed or all posts on your local instance (or all posts from all instances).
I think that's less the fault of Lemmy's algorithm and more the fault of the "interesting times" we're living in. There's just a fuck-ton of politics to be preoccupied with at the moment.
Joined yesterday, I'm loving the gestures of the voyager app
Good choice, voyager is the best app
Thanks.
I do like that the sub-lemmy is focused on Europe as a whole, the one on Reddit was labelled as EU
There's also [email protected].
I just joined and i'm exploring right now. It's looking good ! Of course it will be easier in a few days but i'm honestly pleasantly surprised !
Welcome! For French speaking communities, [email protected] and [email protected] should be useful
Thank you, i will make sure to check these ones !
Welcome in from the cold. We have hot cocoa and blankets.
I prefer grog in the winter, but i will gladly take hot coca ! Thanks
Would you settle for chilled vodka? I have that in spades.
I'm as confused as the next guy, but I'm hanging in there! I'm not sure if the decentralized nature means I'm missing communities because I'm looking in the wrong place, or if there's just fewer stuff around.
I feel the same, but it helps to not just browse "subscribed" but to also check out "local" and especially "all"
You can also take a few minutes and check out the "communities" overview and join those you recognise by name or browse a few of them to decide if you want to join them.
It does not matter on which instance most of the time. Also, I am subscribed to similar communities on different instances, cause why not. Worst case scenario: I get duplicate news.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think that you will see more stuff in All if more people from your instance are subscribed to more communities from other instances.
Go up to Communities
Change Local to All
Search there.
if you're on an even slightly busy instance, you'll probably see most of what exists.
if someone is on a smaller instance, they can go to https://lemmy.world/communities, select ALL and see what exists
For the most part, just going to all on any server with a couple hundred users should be enough to see most of the communities.
Yet it is the case. But if you are in a smaller english speaking instance, you should have most big general community federated to your instance.
lemm.ee has most of the communities federated.
Do you mean instances can federate with communities and not just other instances?
When you follow a remote community, it doesn't send all of that servers posts. Only posts from that comm. That way, if I'm hosting a small server and subscribe to ![email protected], for example, it won't drown my server with the rest of lemmy.worlds posts.
Does that mean what I see in All is a combination of instances my instances is federated with + the comms that users from my instance are subscribed to? So if my instance is federated with another instance and no one from my instance is subbed to any of the comms from that other instance then no one from my instance will see posts from that instance in All?
Sorry for word salad.
All is all the communties on your instance, and remote instances people on your instance subscribe to.
Thanks for confirming this.
https://lemmy-federate.com/ also helps to mitigate that issue
I'm alright.
Welcome! [email protected] and [email protected] can help
Bienvenue cher compatriote
Great experience, Voyager is a great app and Lemmy feels kinda like Reddit in the good old days. Still have to check Reddit threads every now and then through search results while looking for info, though. Hopefully we can get more content going, but I guess that’s up to us users :)
Welcome!
Honestly, I need to get used to all of it, i'm also used to fast paced information and now I see more quality posts but just a lot less of it. I think it might actually be beneficial for my mental health in the long run though!
Welcome!
Very nice here so far 🙂
Welcome!
Hi, thx for warm welcome, had a harder moment learning multi-server architecture of Lemmy, now I'm fine. Still did not abandoned the other portal (actively trying to get banned there by being a rebel tho).
How bout You? how's Your day? :)
Glad to hear! Doing well, thanks :) If you want a casual conversation space, there is [email protected] :)
Still looking around 😬
I was looking for reddit alternatives before and didn't pull through. Now that I did (first hour), I dont see why anyone wouldn't "migrate".
Ah, and I'm using "eternity". Reminds me of the old days before reddit turned facebook.
Welcome!
Fine, and how are you?
Welcome in from the cold. We have hot cocoa and blankets.
Why is this buyeuropean on feddit.uk but it has an EU flag? I feel like somebody has yet to learn about a major political event that happened in the last few years.
lol. Poor brexiter
There's [email protected] on an Estonian server without a flag, but it's mostly memes
It's kind of empty and I thought about stopping my boycott of Reddit because I think it hurts the US more to use Reddit as a place to talk because unfortunately that's where everybody is. Still couldn't get myself to do it though, but I'm struggling to find content here on Lemmy and I suspect maybe I don't know how to use it
Same here but I also feel like the emptiness helps with my screentime. Easier to check new topics and the continue with life :D i get very stuck on reddit with endless doomscrolling.
same! I'm also free from Facebook scrolling (which turned into BlueSky scrolling and then vanished)
I think a big thing is that the front page is not completely changing in order to grab people's attention every few minutes. Once you've seen what is trending you're set for a little while, and if you don't want to explore other communities and stuff you can go on to do something else with your day.
That said, the default sorting of front page posts on Lemmy (active?) has received some criticism - you should check out the other options for sorting content if you want it to look more fresh. :)
Did you have a look at this post? https://lemmy.world/post/26409821
Welcome!
A question,
How when and where does the money come from to keep lemmy running?
Since nothing is free in life who pays for lemmy?
The server admins pay for it. Or people donate to the instance to keep it running
And on that note, consider donating to the instance and/or the Lemmy devs (and any other open-source project you find useful). I also need to make a round of donations soon!
Varies between instances. sh.itjust.works, for example, is financed via donations.
Divide by zero (the instance I'm on) takes donations. People who donate get a nifty flair in the governance threads, but you don't have to donate to vote on issues the server faces. (We also allow non-members to vote, though since they're not as impacted by decisions made for the instance, their votes are given lower weights.)
Volunteers. Think about it like volunteering for your local community. Like a football coach or something.
There are also ways to donate to the core developers who write most of the Lemmy software running on each server.
https://join-lemmy.org/donate
Lemmy is much cheaper to run than mastodon. Small instances have negligible financial costs
https://feddit.org/post/2600584
I pay the server admins for feddit.uk (the instance this community is hosted on) to help with hosting costs because I think they provide a valuable service. Currently I am not paying towards Lemmy (I do pay towards Mastodon development however) but I may start doing that in the future.
My £5 a month to Feddit.uk and £1 a month to Mastodon isn’t much but it’s orders of magnitude more than Reddit and Twitter would have earned from my (adblock using) eyeballs before so hopefully a few of us paying a few pounds/euros/dollars directly is enough to support the services.
Edit (approx. one month later): I am now supporting Lemmy development directly, ~$5 a month which I hope makes it sustainable if enough people contribute.
Running a lemmy server is cheap enough, so they source most of their money from donations. The lemmy software is also powered by donations.
New world to explore, keep clicking and wil see where I end up!
Switched to LibreOffice, and Betterbird for Mail. Works well so far. Using Vivaldi as a browser, that's a European project but with a modified Chrome core as far as I understand, the built-in AdBlocker works fine in combination with NoScript, even on mobile. Trying out Linux Mint so I can switch the OS when Windows 10 loses support later this year.
what Software do you want?
I'm surprised how quickly I've gotten used to it! I honestly really like the mobile app and it's gestures, as well as the customizability.
Although I don't think I'll be completely quitting reddit just yet, as some of my more niche interests don't have communities here yet.
That's fair, most of people still use Reddit for niche interests
Have you considered creating new communities for your niche interests? You might just find like-minded people here. :)
I would but I simply don't have the time or motivation to moderate and manage a community
Well here's the thing, if no one shows up then there's nothing to moderate, and if people show up you can make one or several of moderators. ;) But you'll never find out unless you create a community.
So far doing really good, also while I know it is some kind of bubble I am in now, I really enjoy not seeing posts from certain subreddits popping up in my feed anymore.
Welcome!
I'm missing some of my topics. Is noone interested in dating, dating advice, self improvement, psychology and this stuff?
Or am I missing something?
People are nice here. I like that. 😊👍
Idk but I just searched up this sub for you
![email protected]
Nice one! Maybe [email protected] as well
I see where my mistake was. I searched in "all" not in "communities" only. Thanks a lot 🥰
Ps: The best way to find all communities everywhere is to search on this site:
https://lemmyverse.net/communities
If nobody on your instance is following a community yet, it might not be immediately visible to you in search. It's a bit unfortunate, but oh well. :)
Edit: The discoverability of "unknown" communities could be added to a future version of Lemmy - apparently it just made its way into PieFed a few hours ago!
Glad to be here!
Welcome!
It's pretty fun, it does stuff better than Reddit so I'm focusing on that. Personally I'm enjoying that you can scroll through so many parts when searching for a topic
Welcome! I'l glad you like it.
Do you mean the instances or the feeds?
I’m a little bit confused still but haven’t had the time to read through any FAQs. I don’t know how to access my account in a web browser for example (I’m using an iPhone app now).
So thank you for those links! Will have a look.
Ok, that was almost embarrassingly easy 🙈😅 Thanks!
The website you would go to in your desktop browser is feddit.nu.
I still need to get used to the federated architecture but it's growing on me. I hope we can engage as much as possible so it's more attractive to be active here.
Hi! I'm here to engage 👋
On which sub did you used to hang out?
Doing good here.
Thx for these spaces, Lemmy is really enjoyable and Reddit is flushing down so fast!
Doing a bit more mildly optimistic. Lemmy has great potential!
Just arrived. It seams great.
Not even sure if I saw any posts on buyfromEU. I just saw a picture somewhere with alternatives to various platforms, and it had Lemmy. I had been looking for an alternative to Reddit anyway, so thought I'd give it a shot. My first day here, I got banned from like three Reddit subs and got multiple content takedowns and warnings for up voting Luigi adjacent comments/posts. At that point I was done. Deleted my account yesterday.
I just scroll through the main All feed. Seems like a cool place so far. I'm using the Photon UI because I like how it looks on PC.
Welcome!
Thanks!
Between Mangione in the US and the Buy European movement, I feel like we're attracting the right kind of crowd. If https://50501.chat becomes a central hub of US protests we'll basically have the entire western resistance gathered on Lemmy.
Thrilled to have you here!
Glad to be here, thanks!
Still not sure about the best Android App, I've tried Interstellar, what seemed kind of unfinished. Now I have Voyager, what seems better so far.
Furthermore I miss some Sub..Lemmis? like r/bida (am i the asshole), r/Staiy, r/LeopardsAteMyFace .
[email protected]
Voyager is the best
I basically struggled with the default sorting on home, which is the most 'active' topics. So I saw older posts what was really confusing, because it looked like I don't receive updates. But I found the desired setting in meantime 👍
The sort icon also is very uncommon.. I might fill an issue on Github.
Edit: Got it.. its because the icon of the current chosen sorting shows up, not a generic sort Icon.
I've tried them all and Summit is what I settled on. The dev ia really active too.
We just call them communities, or comms. Some people suggested "lemmings" but it didn't really catch on.
Thx! Oh sad 😄 Lemmings is sweet
Actually I think 'lemmings' was suggested as a demonym (like 'redditors') but I think others felt it was an insult, suggesting we would follow each other off a cliff 😄
Oh yes, the comparison is not so helpful 😂
Still confused. My app connects me to a single one of the two instances I joined and I managed to get myself in a position where I get separate notifications from separate posts on those instances. So I've been going back and forth between my app and Firefox. Still a bit confused....
Which app is it?
Voyager
Interesting, maybe try posting about the issue on [email protected] , that community is quite active
You should only have one account. The instance you choose is only responsible to store your data, you will still be able to view all communities on all instances
Well, you only need one account. You can have as many as you want.
If one thing is to be remebered from this last wave of inscription that is OP was kept busy.
Needed to use that momentum to make Lemmy grow
Thx! I'm still learning the ropes here but so far so good.
Welcome! Don't hesitate to ask.
I am having trouble with the absence of centralized communities. For many many topics communities seem to exist on multiple instances and that splits up the user base and discussions it seems. I get that it is an inherent part of the design, but it hurts my experience.
Also the number of users seems to be too low still to create a lively environment. I hope that changes but so far the number of posts and comments on those posts seems a bit low compared to what I was used to.
Having said all that, I love the app (I am using voyager) and the general vibe of the people on here. Let’s hope on more users and a continued constructive community!
What topics are you interested in? Usually there is a more active community, and then smaller ones.
For instance for movies:
https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=movies&order=active can help to discover those, usually weekly or monthly active users is a good metric.
This post can help as well: https://lemm.ee/post/57443076
A few other examples where one community become "the one"
Good.
Doing great 😆
Thanks, I love it so far. Been feeling a little guilty for staying on Reddit after the API changes but felt too daunting to learn how to fediverse. Glad I finally pushed myself to do it. (Sync helped a lot too since I had it for Reddit before and was/is awesome!)
Welcome ! I don't know Sync but people seems to like it for Lemmy and there is lot of other choice to try for.
Would love to get a good replacement for r/hardware. Otherwise it‘s really nice!
[email protected] has some promise, light on conversation, but we could fix that by going there and talking :)
[email protected] has a lot more people in it, but the ML servers are hit or miss on community.
[email protected] and [email protected]
Hey thanks! Are you sure the first one is working? Cant seem to find it 👀
I am happy I joined (in past 14 days or so). So far I like it a lot. In the past I tried lemmy and was confused how it works. Somehow I thought when I post something on mastodon it can also be targeted to lemmy (posts or replies), but I think I largely misunderstood and that put me off for some time. But when I found out about this sublemmy I had to try again and this time with success!
I'm confused about this too, I've subscribed to the hashtag #buyeuropean on mastodon and I see posts from this community here over there? 🤔
Which Lemmy app is the best?
I like Connect for Lemmy
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kuroneko.lemmy_connect
Thanks. What could be the reason some reply comments arent loading? Is it some kind of Lemmy bug?
I often see people recommending Voyager, so that's probably worth a try :)
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voyager-for-lemmy/id6451429762 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.vger.voyager&hl=en_US
Glad to be here. Switched to vivaldi. On my way to delete amazon, paypal, microsoft and google accounts. Using Signal + an own hostes emailadres from germany. Thinking im on a good way
Well done!
Pretty cool, good to see we have an alternative to reddit.
