This is the video that convinced me to get the cheap powder detergent.

and also to run the hot water tap before starting so that it has hot water from the start.

If you have a disposal, run that while you're heating the water too. A full/clogged disposal will cause backups or slow drainage which puts more strain on the pump.

That's not needed, the first cycle just rinses it.

It's better to rinse it with hot water. The rinse cycle uses so little water that hot water doesn't make it to the dishwasher if you didn't use any from the sink.

We tried the cheap powder detergent based on the video and had terrible results. Did it just like he says, dishes kept getting residue on them. Tried adding citric acid, a little better but still not clean.

Went back to the pods of liquid stuff. Dishes are clean again, glass shiny, all is well.

Kinda same here. We tried the powder with terrible results and went back to liquid (never tried the pods).

Powder detergent is the way. When I open up the dishwasher at the end of the cycle and find clean dishes and no residual foam at the bottom of the machine I know that I used just the right dose.

In most dishwashers the "middle rack" is just the top rack. You would know if you had a dishwasher with 3 racks. And to be fair, the third rack tends to not have a lot of headroom when you do have one. Can only fit silverware and small utensils.

call your grandparents and tell them your dad overloaded the dishwasher

sometimes the middle and/or top can be height adjusted easily. Allows for taller things on that shelf at cost to shelf below.
