Possible virus downloaded in PC? Any explanation for issues I encountered?

My cousin had encountered issues where his PC would ask to choose an OS to boot into which was strange as I only installed windows 11 into it. From there it began to not detect any bootable devices.

I go to check it out and enounter the same issues, even after changing the boot priority (the only storage, a HDD, was still showing in the BIOS). I am unable to even boot into an Ubuntu image on a USB (crashes when it does a "file check" or something to that effect).

Suspecting the HDD, less than a year old, may be damaged I connect it to my rig (dumb mistake in hindsight), and I am able to view files in the hdd with no issues, several times. I assume then that the HDD is likely working and my cousin either downloaded something malicious or made a change to his system to damage it.

I setup a windows 11 image, and connect to via usb to his system where I reinstall windows. Even after successfully "installing" windows 11, i kept getting a no bootable device error. I was finally able to boot into an Ubuntu image on a USB, and still view the HDD, so I reinstalled linux with no issues, after which i was finally able to reinstall windows 11 with no issues.

I'm curious if this could have been a virus that cause these issues? (do any viruses cause similar issues?) If its more likely he did something wrong to the PC (he's not tech savvy) or potentially something else?

Newsom says California homelessness is declining. Here’s what the data shows

Hopefully the decrease in unhoused population continues to decrease due to actual changes implemented, rather than due miscounting.

I did the math based on the numbers presented: The article states an estimated 24 Billiion dollars spent on unhoused people since Newsome’s entry into office (2019, 6 years), with an estimated 84,000 unhoused. That means we’ve spent about 47,619 dollars per unhoused person, per year in that time.

Edit This is a vary rough estimate, and assumes the number of unhoused was the same during all of Newsom's years in office (it for sure has not been), but it gives an idea of how much was given per person rather than just looking at the large, 24 billion dollar number.

Not seen here, but do social medias (namely and especially Reddit) seem to like to show "neutral" videos of India, that show it in a bad light?

The only videos/pictures I mainly see of India don't explicitly try to show india in a negative light, but implicity do. Stuff like videos of people using their bare feet as tools to work on items, unsanitary restaurant conditions, etc.

I've never been to India (on my list), I love Indian people, their culture, and especially their food. Because of that, I'm relatively certain those videos are hand picked to go viral, but I don't have anything real to compare it to (my own experience). But also, the disgust seems very manufactured, with frequent racist comments as well in those posts.

Has anybody else noticed this?

California has the longest light-rail line in the world. It doesn’t quite work

What do you all think about this article?

I will agree the A line isn’t exactly amazing, but I also don’t completely agree with some assertions and experiences from the author. The author mentions how long it takes to get to the extremes of the A line, but the A line isn’t exactly meant to travel across vast distances quickly, its meant to provide connections along its routes. I do agree it would be nice to go from Pasadena to long beach very quickly, (in the same way with the E line being able to get to santa monica from East LA quicker), but we’d need to develop an additional tracks to allow faster service and/or priority to the line. Those can be done later. It feels like for a lot of LA’s history, creating train lines is important because of how hard it is to do, and how much harder it will be in the future.

I don’t quite agree with the author’s bad experiences on the A line. Yeah there are definitely bad times where the train smells horrible, or weird alarm things happen, but it is extremely rare in my experience and hasn’t dissuaded me from using it.
