Fans of American Football: Are you gonna Watch this Super Bowl?

Lifelong football enjoyer here, but I can no longer stomach the NFL anymore. I realize the league is, and has always been, an entertainment business but they don’t even bother hiding the massaging anymore. They’re clearly feeling threatened by the fact that college football is more interesting now with the CFP and transfer portal, so they’re desperate for dramatic narratives. wilL iT BE A ThREEPeAT? wILL keLCe PrOposE to tayLOR SWIfT? dID wE MEnTIon TAyLOR swIFT iS HEre?

Anyways, good thing I got into rugby recently cuz it’s Six Nations time

Yeah, that was another "they're not even trying to hide it anymore" moment, considering they made that announcement right after Trump announced he would be at the game.

The wildest part of that press release was when the NFL spokesperson said that "Choose Love" was more fitting than "End Racism" because the country has been dealing with tragedies such as the LA fire and the DC plane crash. Like... how will choosing love prevent natural disasters and vehicle accidents?

27

I thought those were different at every stadium kinda like the helmet messages where they get picked by the player. Don't the teams pick what is on the end zones? I have season tickets to the Bills and have never noticed the endzone message say stop racism I've never actually looked at the message so I don't know exactly what it says but I think their message was always "Stop hate"

Nope. First time in at least 20 years that I'm skipping it. Sick of apparent officiating favoritism towards Kansas City, not happy with the decision to remove "End Racism" from the end zones, pissed that the orange turd's going to be there, and I'm sickened by Kelce and Mahomes saying they're honored to play in front of him.

lemmy.world

Nope.

Kinda done with football now given the overal fanbase around me are MAGA heavy.

24

Same! I was looking forward to seeing Kendrick Lamar perform the halftime show. But I will just look it up later on or tomorrow on YT. And fingers crossed that Donny gets booed by the crowd.

6

Not entirely true!

If you watch college basketball or football, we have the Temple Owls here in Philadelphia. They have some pretty badass logos too!

Maybe someone will make nocturnal_avians, a la /r/trees and /r/marijuana_enthusiasts or /r/worldnews and /r/anime_titties.

Why don’t you cough up something you like so we can mock it for no reason

5

Tempted to go to a sports bar to laugh at all the chuds that get mad each time Taylor Swift shows up on screen for 5 seconds.

lemm.ee

No, the referees made bad calls in the semifinals, and so it feels like I'm watching a game that's not about winners but about the organization's picks.

10
lemmy.world

Nope. Been a thoroughly dispiriting season for the Niners, and I have absolutely no wish to watch the Chiefs win yet again.

And that was before Trump, the End Racism thing and so on.

8
lemmy.yachts

Also a Niners fan, yeah that was rough. I can't help but feel like there's something going on institutionally that's causing all the injuries, like players are being pushed too hard in practice or players are being pressured to return from injuries too early or something. Just too many injuries in one season to chalk up to bad luck.

3

Yep. I mean a few years of going deep in the playoffs probably takes its toll, but still, it was ridiculous.

What really got me this year though was what seemed like an unbelievable amount of errors and stupid (and costly) penalties. I've not looked at the numbers to see if this is more than just my impression, but I feel like they shot themselves in the foot so many times, much more than the average.

Fingers crossed for a rested and healed team, and a good draft!

Never been a football fan. But I very much want to see the entire stadium call Drake a pedophile at halftime.

7

i love my Seahawks and I usually catch the Superbowl but IDGAF about the chiefs winning any more and the eagles are not exciting

the commercials are shit. the halftime show is shit

only the gathering matters

6
lemmy.world

Yes, but more because of the gathering of friends and less because the game is on. I'd prefer neither team win (I'll be watching with a lot of Eagles fans, and as a Titans fan, I don't want anyone being happy). Idk if I'd say the CFP stole the spotlight either, I'm almost certain the Superbowl always gets way more viewers than any other sporting event. NFL is just really leaning into narratives for casual viewers because they know NFL fans are gonna watch regardless.

College is stealing the spotlight for actual fans of the game, is what I should've said. The Super Bowl is always gonna have more casual viewers, especially internationally

As a major college football fan for the past 35 years, I didn’t watch the national championship for the first time in 20+ years. If my team had made it sure, but i vehemently hate what has happened to the sport I love recently and don’t really care about games they ain’t involved in anymore.

2
lemmy.yachts

I’m guessing you’re not a fan of the transfer portal? I do like the fact that the players have more power over their own destinies now, considering all the millions of dollars their labor was earning their schools, but the transfer portal does seem a bit like a knee-jerk change. I’m optimistic there will be some changes to make it better. Like maybe they can only transfer once, between sophomore and junior year. And they definitely need to make players wait to transfer until after bowl season if they want non-CFP bowl games to mean anything

2

I actually dont mind the transfer portal although it needs governance. I hate the CFP and the road the whole sport is on to become a nfl light with two super conferences. I miss the regionality that is going away. I hate conference expansion in every capacity. I miss bowl games being meaningful to the teams playing in them, the rest of the country be damned. I legit dislike almost everything besides players getting paid

Edit: to be clear I hate the NFL and kinda always have, cfb was different and imo more enjoyable because it wasn’t so focused on the playoffs and postseason. I’m for sure in the minority. But my enjoyment of the sport has wavered significantly to the point where if my team isn’t involved I’m not watching anymore. I used to watch everything

3

Yeah, can agree with that. I live in a P5 town and the NFL just isn't even close.

1

Usually I look forward to it and watch it every year. This year I have no desire to watch all the American patriotism that surrounds the game...

This superbowl was awful honestly. Pregame performers were bad and had no energy, halftime show was awful to listen to if you didn't know Kendrick's music already, and the game was a beat down. The only saving grace was mahomes flopping on the big stage after everyone hyped that team up for the 3peat

I mean, how was the game? Surely you don't watch it for the singers.

1

The game was extremely one-sided and the chiefs looked like what I expected. Strong defense, weak offense that couldn't do anything against a better defense. But the entire year the announcers talked about how great mahomes was, and how they were going to just turn it up when it was superbowl time. That didn't happen

3

Nah. I don't really care unless my team (Steelers) is playing in it. Though, I will watch Kendricks halftime show performance afterwards, hoping that he decides to give a big "Fuck you" to drumpf, while ignoring drake entirely (the ultimate diss). But today is Leg day, and thou shalt keep holy the day of Legs, so I'll probably catch some while it plays at the gym.

Hopefully the eagles win, so they can snub drumpf like they did last time. The chiefs would probably accept the invitation to the white house and be all giddy about it 🙄

5

It's kind of a funny thing, I don't think I can miss the super bowl. I used to play football at lunch in middle school, and loved watching and following it then. Once I learned about concussions, I pretty much stopped watching. Not a huge fan of the halftime shows lately, and the ads have definitely gotten worse. The thing is the super bowl is just a great time to go out and hang out with friends, so I'm going to watch it every year for a while.

4

Yeah because it’s a day for beer, cooking, and entertainment. I don’t care much for the teams playing though.

4

If there were some chance of something interesting happening.. in the exta curriculars.. maybe.

I'll at least be scanning the streams.

3
lemmy.world

No? What does the superbowl have to do eith Midwest emo music?

3

Its on but not paying too much attention. Hard to find any joy in the world right now.

3

Live in one of the cities that played. Thought they won with the fireworks, but was kinda pathetic this year. Was told apparently they were getting thrashed and it was only halftime so people must have been setting off shit they got instead of staying up.

Good. I was worried they'd make another go at raising taxes for their stadium and would have a good chance if they won.

2

You think they're scared of the CFP? I thought college football was worse than ever this year.

2

I'll watch it because I'm in the UK but I don't really want to see the refs hand KC another win.

Go Bears! (Been supporting them since 1984 and thought I'd picked an absolute winner).

2

Even the commercials suck now. They used to let the writers take bigger risks and make over the top stuff that was legitimately funny and entertaining. Now they just feel like normal commercials with bigger budgets, aka the same writing as normal commercials but with celebrities delivering the lines

7

I'll have it on the second monitor of the computer. I agreed to lead a roleplay thing in a mud game I play in. Accidentally days got messed up so it's this week and not next. Once that's done I'll sit on the couch and eat taquitos and try and understand downs again.

1

I love college football but haven’t been able to get into pro. I just dont feel attached to any team. I’ll hang out and watch it w friends sure, and eat but wish could be on the edge of my seat like the college playoffs that just ended.

1

If you don't have a geographic attachment to any team, yeah, I could see how it would be hard. They all run pretty much the same offense... another reason I like college better, much more diversity in offensive systems

2

Nope. Haven't watched a single super bowl since before the 13 second game where the Bills lost to the Chiefs in the divisional round. The game was so much less painful to watch when the Bills never made the playoffs for 17 years. Now it's too heart breaking

1

Two random groups of primitive brawlers fight over a ball that is not even round. All while serving ads, ads, and more ads. The perfect American sport.

Although you could make it even more American by handing those players some guns.

-1

Yes. I know how shitty the league is but my family is in love with football so why not. Not really cheering for either team.

Ita almost impossible to avoid the shit now. I know plenty of corps are horrible and I still buy from them, in fact its rarer to find a corp that's not shitty than one that is. But if I stop supporting anyone whose business I didn't agree with then I'd probably turn to dust tbh.
