then you remember they required a family of D batteries and lasted 2 hours tops. meanwhile my phone can connect to several speaker and headphone sets and deliver astonishing quality compared to tapes, while barely moving the battery meter.

If your phone did the full signal amplification and driving of the speakers, that battery would die pretty quickly too.

The decent ones are ridiculously expensive now. It's crazy. If the one he's holding is the one I think it is, that specific models is worth thousands now.

My dad wouldn't let me get one with 2 speakers. Only one speaker. I still don't understand that reasoning.

That configuration allows for a much larger driver than if you had stereo mains—probably get some decent boom out of it

Two speakers, meh. A lot of them had two tape decks and could copy tapes at 2x or 4x speed, for one-click music piracy.
