Owning a Nintendo 64 is a pretty big hurdle. Have you seen how much those fucking things cost now?!

If you can manage to find a place that has one, they're usually selling for $200+ now. I'm pretty sure I can get ebay chinese replicas for like $50 though, but there are some games they won't play.

10

The N64 had a $200 launch price, which is pretty much $400 now. So nobody is making money from holding onto their N64. Hrm, maybe I should pick one up.

Wait, what? I just bought my younger brother an n64 with an expansion pack, rumble pack, and Majora's Mask and OoT for Christmas, and all together that only cost 180$. All legit copies and hardware. Made double and triple sure.

Are people just not hitting the "sort lowest to highest" option on auction sites? Or is this a new development in the last few months?

No, it looks like prices have come way down in the past few months. Last time I checked was a year+ ago. My information just wasn't up to date.

3

Ah, that makes sense. Consoles do tend to spike in price at the height of their nostalgia wave. Probably got boosted up for a while by the rumors of an N64 mini not panning out, and instead being presented with the sub par switch online expansion. Probably created a lot of demand for the real thing.

2

Prices have come down in the last year. I see several on eBay listed tested/working for around $60. One even comes with a controller. Shopgoodwill.com has similar prices when they're available. Prices for auction items with less than 10hrs look very reasonable.

3

You can emulate via software or hardware nowadays.

If you want accuracy, the MiSTer now has an N64 core that is mostly complete.

13

I regret selling mine when I was 17 cause I wanted to buy a paintball gun and gear. At the time, it was a great call cause I didn't play any N64 games at the time, and I got to have a blast playing paintball with my friends.

But man I wish I'd sold something else back then so I could still have my original N64 and games. Still got the ol' NES and Sega Genesis at least.

If you don't like the jank of emulation or the risks of going to pirate sites: An Xbox Series S, Game Pass, and a few controllers is an okay replacement. There's a bunch of Rare games on Game Pass, classic Goldeneye, and they even have stuff like Timesplitters in the store.

1

I'd emulate anything over giving Microsoft any money at all. But thanks.

Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Activision, Blizzard -- all on my shit list and will never get a penny from me.

1

Lots of things stopping me from doing this:

  1. I am currently 36 years old, I will not be 38 at any time during the year 2024.
  2. I do not own a copy of Wrestlemania 2000.
  3. I finished my pizza rolls yesterday.
36

I agree. He just needs to smoke a carton of cigs and drink a bottle of whiskey and he will feel older the next day for sure!

8

I had pizza rolls and played Borderlands 3 last night, but was asleep on the couch at 8:00. I’m 39.

As a 42 year old woman with no work tomorrow, eating takeaway pizza and drinking wine whilst contemplating zelda on the DS I bought over Covid vs a cheesy movie on Hulu this made me smile. :)

29

Why not both. Having a movie or show on the second screen while I game is my lifeblood.

Nothing is stopping you from this right now

Except the cost of the console and games. :(

Also, Beetle Adventure Racing > Wrestlemania

You guys don't keep your childhood consoles?

11

Not all of us came from stable backgrounds. My father lost everything we owned when I was in the Army because he couldn't stop gambling and didn't pay our storage unit... My entire fucking Magic the Gathering collection. I had power 9 and a full duel lands set, many many decks. Not to mention all my consoles and games.

Your phone has enough power to emulate an N64 and roms are free. Ain't nobody making royalties 25 years later on Wrestlemania.

8

Well, yes, I have a gaming PC as well. (and a steam deck) It just ain't the same without the OG controller. Need to get a USB one eventually but I'm poor.

I do still have some of my original carts as well. Same with a bunch of NES carts I got from my previous job. Been eyeing those modern consoles that work with NES carts because that would be nice to have in the living room.

6

They are pretty cheap. Around 50 bucks. With the box around 150. SNES is expensive compared to it. Also, Diddy Kong racing > beetle adventure racing.

Ahhh beetle adventure racing! Brings back memories. I found a legit "cheat" way to play by doing something like turning and then clicking handbrake? A few times and it would take super sharp turns depending on how many times you click handbrake no matter the speed you were going. Allowed be to beat the game and unlock all cars pretty easily.

1

I want to say yes, but honestly that was such a long time ago. I remember there was an "out of this world" secret car but I don't remember much else.

1

This is very close to how my weekend went actually : ) Just with BG3 instead of Wrestlemania, and the wife was out of town instead of no school. Haha.

16

Taking turns playing Doom 64 while drinking Mtn Dew Code Red and eating Buncha Crunch. Everything was downhill after that.

15
sopuli.xyz

Ha! Jokes on you, I’m not 38 until… next week. Guck!

(I meant to type “fuck” but “guck” works just as well.)

15

This honestly needs to be a lemmy insider only word. Replace all reference of fuck with guck going forward.

6

Wrestlemania 2000 was cool and all, but WCW/NWO Revenge will always be my GOAT. I remember as a kid being hella impressed by the customization options.

I also owned WCW/NWO Thunder for PS1. Game was dog shit.

No Mercy is the pinnacle of N64 wrestling games, but the glory started with WCW vs NWO World Tour.

The only problem I had with No Mercy is my save files kept disappearing.

6

I don't think I can be 38 right now unless we want to really break physics. I wouldn't mind shaving a couple of years off, though.

And I'd have to use that weird-assed controller shudder.

That said, y'all have fun and enjoy it! :)

Guys will see this and say hell yeah.

But for real, don't sell your games. Don't be that guy in 20 years being like "remember n64?"

I just got an emulator and play my n64 wrestling games on my tv through my pc

12

Google n64 emulator and n64 roms? Pretty easy. I torrented all the games for nes,sega,snes,n64 few years ago and still have it somewhere. Havent played anything in some time

1

Indeed. Instead be that guy saying "Oh, man... I forgot to check the caps... the motherboard is absolutely corroded and ruined beyond repair!"

Just reminding you if you have any old consoles or other such old electronics. Remember the capacitors.

9

Yup, always like them before you plug it in to test for leakage /s

It's Saturday night, I have no date, just a roll of quarters and a 2 liter bottle of Shasta. Let's do this.

Pretty sure a N64 can be emulated on a raspberry pi 5.

Granted it's probably easier to get a N64 than a pi5... but still. For those folks that want to play... It's possible.

Also I hear steam deck is a great way to emulate it...

7
Jerkfacereply
lemmy.world

Hell, I get 60fps in 1080p on a Raspberry Pi 3b playing Mario Kart 64.

5

They were a really impressive little piece of kit. With no extra peripherals, I was able to play NES on one core, and use FFMPEG on the other three to encode and stream to Twitch with mono sound. For $35. Probably my favorite gadget of it's time.

3

I remember the hype of getting chairs from the audience in this game!

We rented this one a lot.

7

I think you mean "the alcohol cabinet is stocked and so are the retro games". Legend of Zelda, here I come.

6

39 yrs here. I got my kid a gaming laptop for Christmas, but then I bought all the old Halo games for it for myself. I just got an Xbox controller for it this weekend and it has been a wonderful experience.

5

I have to work tomorrow :(

But other than that, let’s swap to wcw vs nwo and your on!

5
lemmy.world

Never understood the dislike for the controller. Have you ever used it?

2

Not having an N64 or a copy of that game stops me.

This and the other WWE games on N64 is why I went through so many controllers... A lot of them had you spinning the stick to get out of stuff and it would wear down the springs until the stick was worthlessly flaccid. 😩

3

Not being American, thus no pizza rolls is stopping me. I do want some though.
