No option to delete account?

I’m not feeling this app and would like to delete my account. There only looks to be an option to log out, what gives?

@fidget: Did the language translation stuff get shoehorned in then? Not that it’s a feature that I can see in practice. Surely you must also realise the horrific reputation that India has with scams especially in the tech world. It’s very hard to trust anyone online these days, but it’s well documented how many blatant scams operate out of your country.

Started a new thread because the previous one reached max comment depth. Quoted the comment above.

The language translation feature is a feature that's heavily requested by the Indian community. We are still testing it out because it does not deliver very accurate results yet. We'll actually be deploying the feature to beta soon.

If you ask my personal opinion, we needed more time to polish the beta before putting it out. However, we course-corrected, and updated a lot of our priorities because of the lessons we learnt.

Finally, the North Indian Scam centers are a plague to India. Do not trust anyone on the Internet, nor any unexpected phone calls, that's actually a good practice and I support it too. I almost became a victim of a scam myself last month when I ordered sports shoes online.

However it's rude to appropriate everyone from India to be a scammer or a thief. Please don't do that.

Was having the same weird moment realizing there was no way to delete.

I get this if a work in progress, but after forcing a social-only login it's just tiring to realize they probably have my account data stored here forever.

This was very much not worth it lol

Yeah, despite the “trust us bro” received below, there’s literally no good reason to do this.

However there are plenty of reasons to force this if the intention is malicious.

Lmao did you actually do it? I think the app is preety legit

You can do it and still access the site just fine. Which begs the question why it’s even necessary to begin with.

Out of morbid curiosity what makes this so legit?

@ydreply

We use Google services to send users notifications, and to protect the servers from bots.

Yeah of course, but not allowing deletion as a standard seems sketchy at best. Revoking access doesn’t stop personal data being stored on these servers. No lawyer but seems to be a breach of GDPR to me.

We had a bug in the account deletion resolver that would cause the whole app to crash for everyone. Something to do with foreign keys. There's a lot of stuff to fix, and a lot of features to work on.

Email authentication and account deletion is currently the topmost priority, followed by fixing tech scaling issues.

That being said, we do not store any Google data on our servers since that's a breach of Google's Terms of Service. We only started with Google because it was expensive to build our own login system (sending emails for account recovery and all is really expensive, those large corporates have made it hard for us to compete)

This would be a very basic requirement for me before releasing it into the wild.

Despite the expense, it’s also a huge barrier to entry to more tech savvy folk. Also, not everyone has a google account, so there’s that.

Back when we were targeting only an Indian audience, everyone here has a Google account. I agree we should have done a more thorough survey on what the preferred login methods are before just building the MVP with only Google Login.

I remember when we were really short on funds, literally running the servers at ₹80/mo, and Google felt like the best option since it was free.

In hindsight, the one lesson we learnt is that shortcut solutions come back to bite hard.

Actually you know honestly not you mention it, I do find it really fucking weird that there is no settings options. Like I can't change anything why is that? This is actually kind of alarming what's going on here?

7
fidget avatar

Thankfully I signed up with a burner, but the only option of creating an account linking to a google account is also worrying.

Yea I did some research on them here's what I found

https://www.instafinancials.com/director/eeshan-raghuvir-keni/09314279

SPYKE SOCIAL PRIVATE LIMITED

https://www.zaubacorp.com/company/SPYKE-SOCIAL-PRIVATE-LIMITED/U72900GA2021PTC014946

https://in.linkedin.com/in/yashdiniz?trk=public_profile_browsemap

This is pretty much kind of the information that I was getting from them when I was searching them. I got one of the directors email addresses and looked up their account on epios@gmail tool and they have a lot of leaked accounts

Great work, good to know these people exist. But it does nothing to stop me wondering how malicious their intent could be.

Not just that, what if there was a breach and the user data ended up in the wrong hands?

@ydreply

I am Yash Diniz. Co-founder of Spyke Social Private Limited. Eeshan Keni and I are building a social media platform called Spyke.

We have a vision of streamlining discussion, where content and debate matters more. A place where the person who posted something can debate without worrying about insults for having a perspective or choosing a side.

We didn't put this up anywhere because it doesn't match with our vision. Spyke shouldn't be about a group of people trying to make a difference.

As is having the word SPY in their name.

I know it honestly freaked me out the first couple times I was looking for them on the Internet

I hope they get back to you soon what makes you not like the app anymore?

1
fidget avatar

It’s dead, very childish looking, not the sort of content I’m looking for. The list goes on. I was attracted by the colourful site making it look well put together, but not having the ability to preview the site and it’s content (like most apps) before signing up should’ve been an immediate red flag.

4

Yeah I'm totally agreeing with you on that I'm getting weird Vibes man. The limited amount of information just screams red flag something ain't right
