Why was Rahul Gandhi disqualified from being an MP?

Eligibility criteria for an Indian MP says that an MP cannot have a criminal record nor be imprisoned for two years or more.

Rahul Gandhi did something and got convicted for defamation. So now he has a court case against him and cannot be an MP unless the conviction is taken away.

Rahul Gandhi should have talked to his lawyers before making those statements. He deserves what he got. Now he's in trouble and competing politicians are taking advantage of it.
