If they were honest with themselves they would admit they don't even believe in democracy. It's impossible to hold such cynicism towards your neighbors whilst also thinking their opinions matter.

The purpose of a system is what it does. We are all trying to make someone else personally responsible for this mess instead of critiquing the systems that got us here. Meanwhile the leadership of the democratic party openly states they would rather loose to Republicans than have to negotiate with the DSA.

When voters hear that they stop believing it is a dire situation. If the candidates themselves believed the election was existential they would stop doing unpopular things. The call is coming from inside. Framing popularity as a purity test is simply wishing elections behaved differently.
