If it's anything like the deer where I live they fucking had it coming. The best way to browse is by subscribed communities, in my opinion. Check them out in the menu at the top. Local coms are the ones on your instance. They'll be arranged by most popular to least, so keep in mind that the ones at the bottom might be abandoned. This is a much smaller place than reddit.

Make sure you check out the rules in the sidebars before posting or commenting. Each community will have different rules ranging from common sense to performance art.

I agree. But, giving is better than hoarding in an already corrupt system. I think their methodology for determining what's altruistic is flawed, though. Only giving efficiently ignores that not all positive initiatives can be efficient, by nature. Like it's cheaper and easy to buy a thousand people a good pair of shoes, not so much to buy fewer people a good computer or a home.
