Yeah this is going to affect android in multiple ways. I'm guessing that the emulators and YouTube apps are out, the Devs will have all their apps banned if they bother to register.

Personally I have a developer account but some apps I give away as open source. Now I'm going to have to register those apps and if one of them isn't up to Google's standards (whatever they say that is on the day) then ALL of my apps get banned!

I have multiple old android devices which can't use lineagos because they are locked or just too obscure. But right now they can be used with f-droid apps for games and ad-free content. I'm guessing that's going to change.

The barrier to entry will go up and even more old android devices will be thrown away. Make sure you buy a mainstream device that has a chance of being supported beyond the manufacturers 2 year support window - in my experience mobile and tablets actual lifespan is 4-5 years, up to 10 with new battery. Why are we forced to throw them away after 2 years? It's a total scam.

As a former Android developer, you can't just do anything in an android app on a modern smartphone. The system is fighting you for resources the whole time. It makes sense to have something like this running as root on a device that you control.

I have this exact situation with my wife's work laptop, which can't upgrade to windows 11. The requirements are pretty simple, something that runs Chrome and Dropbox as well as Microsoft Office 2007.

I'm going with Mint Cinnamon for her (I use arch & kde btw) - was pleasantly surprised to see Dropbox now has Linux support actually, haven't looked at it for years!

In my country you are charged a license fee for the privilege of owning a tv. That's why I always only had a PC attached to a monitor instead.

Nowadays that is replaced with a dirt cheap orange pi running libreelec (Kodi) which also runs pi-hole in the background for all of the other devices on the network.

The setup is a bit of a hassle but it's a vast improvement on the interface and functionality of friends "Smart TV" experiences in my opinion. I even set it up to work with an old TV remote as the pi has IR built in, although there are phone apps to do remote control also.

I'm still pissed at them for closing their old browser and deleting all my stuff. Yup, that was 12 years ago when I used to use Opera for everything - opera mobile was the best!

Let's hope Firefox can hang in there, the last alternative to Chrome. We really need both to navigate the modern web these days

Picking stuff up with my toes. I use the two big ones like chopsticks or just scrunch something up with all of them together. My toes can spread out as wide as my fingers, so it's easy to manipulate things with them. Also, I am very well balanced on one leg, probably because of doing this for so long.

This power is more and more useful as I get older and find it more of a chore to bend over, with my beer belly getting in the way (I'm almost 50, it's a sign of success!). If it's below my waist I'm going to pick it up with my foot 50% basically.

I was about 19, a magician friend told me I was good enough at juggling to do busking but I was too shy. Decided to give it a go anyway and remember shaking so hard while lighting the fire torches I was using. Made R30 ($2) so not a lot but I did it. I remember thinking to myself, "I'll never have to work again!"
