He's very confused

There's no confusion. People like this just don't think a homeless person deserves anything.

I imagine they take it as an affront, that a homeless man could have the "gall" to take charity from them, while he has a phone "hidden" in his pocket, as if that means he's a con-man, and not really in need at all.

In their mind, if a homeless man owns a phone, then he can't be genuinely destitute. If he was then he should sell that phone to afford his next meal, instead of begging on the street.

Never mind that a phone is probably the single most important tool to in modern life to stay informed and connected, not to mention and entertained and sane.

Never mind that a phone could be the difference between staying homeless for ever, or finding work.

No - if you are homeless then you certainly aren't allowed to own any tools that would help you get out of it.

Site: "I don't feel so good...."

The fade should be slow and subtle. At first the client thinks they are just imagining it, but then they start getting customer support calls about the site being faded, and their bosses are pointing it out too in meetings, and as it happens more and more the panic really begins to set in.

Finally they reach out to you in a desperation when there's barely anything left of the site and ask you to urgently fix the problem, and you just shrug your shoulders sympathetically and explain it's happening because they haven't paid - but not like in a way that suggests you are doing it on purpose, but a way where it's simply an unavoidable natural consequence, like if you didn't pay your electricity bill your power would get cut and the site is slowly "dying" and fading away because of that.

They'd pay so fast.

Binary search

It's not that the cops don't know how to search a video, they simply don't want to, because theft of property from you, a working-class nobody, is nothing to them.

Discord now properly supports screensharing on linux

I was almost convinced they were keeping this broken on purpose, it's been broken so long. Like, years long.

It was broken so long I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if news surfaced that Discord was taking back-handers from Microsoft under the table to keep it broken. With steam working so well on Linux now, broken discord streaming without actual working audio share was one of the last things that posed a hurdle for gamers ditching Windows.

(In the meantime, thank you Vesktop for your service <3)

AI in reality

Can you imagine the absolute misery of working for someone like this.

A person who thinks developers are all useless, and has total contempt for any skills that aren't "business" stuff.

A person who thinks tech is easy and you can "just" do this and "just" do that and everything will be done, always telling you "this is so easy I could do it myself" while any contribution they make only makes things worse, and if there's any kind of hold-up it's because you're either "lazy" or "incompetent"

No thanks.

Sacrifices have to be made for profit

Yeah actually mental.

What he calls 'dedication' is actually fear at having to hold your job down during the middle of a fucking WAR because if you disappoint your corporate overlords you will be both getting missiles rained on you AND unable to support your family.

It's desperation, and desperation which is very intentionally baked into the system so dickhead 'leaders' like these can get the slaves they are looking for and label that slavery as a 'positive work ethic'

So out of touch with real people.

Air Canada must pay damages after chatbot lies to grieving passenger about discount | Airline tried arguing virtual assistant was solely responsible for its own actions

Shame on Air Canada for even fighting it.

I'm glad for this ruling. We need to set a legal precedent that chatbots act on behalf of the company. And if businesses try to claim that chatbots sometimes make mistakes then too bad - so do human agents, and when this happens in this customer's favour it needs to be honoured.

Companies want to use AI to supplement and replace human agents, but without any of the legal consequences of real people. We cannot let them have their cake and eat it at the same time.

Volkswagen reintroducing physical controls for vital functions | Autocar

This may in part be motivated by new guidance from NCAP, which will from next year require that all new cars have physical controls to earn the highest safety ratings.

https://www.evo.co.uk/car-technology/207666/buttons-could-replace-touch-controls-in-cars-thanks-to-new-euro-ncap-tests

Whatever the motivation though, I'm glad for it. Getting rid of buttons was always a dumb idea and I'm happy to see pushback.
