Inertia means most people don't *want* to move elsewhere. A longer blackout would just result in people scattering all over the place.

A short blackout keeps the community together, while also showing reddit what could happen if they don't change their mind.

Removing the analysis paralysis of figuring out which server to join goes a long way to encouraging people to give it a go.
