Current state of Place 2023

Reply in thread

There were plenty videos posted showing that reddit admins were using some tool that was just putting random patterns over it (they didn't even bother to make it look real, so it appeared all at once)

People who are engaging with it as a form a protest are just dumb. Reddit has full control over it so they can remove anything they don't like instantly.

Lemmy.world Admin Response to Meta/Threads

Was this considered? https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

Google essentially destroyed Jabber this way.

I was there and Jabber at the time also looked promising and Google adding its GTalk was the push everyone thought Jabber needed and everyone was welcoming it.

Meta will join Fediverse only if it will be still a threat to them, once users will switch to it (let's be honest, majority of users on Fediverse aren't purists, and if metra will have some unique features they will switch) they will defederate and Fediverse will lose meta users as well as old users. Just exactly as it happened with Jabber. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

With ISP what is really need is Local-loop unbundling but extending to ISPs.

Those that are old enough to use DSL in early 2000, might remember there was a lot of ISPs to chose from. The reason for it was that due to Title II telco companies were required to lease lines to their competitors. When cable started to be popular, ISPs lobbied politicians to categorize it under Title I which removed that requirement. We got Internet back to be categorized as Title II, but this specific rule was excluded and this is what is necessary to bring the competition.

Drag shows are protected by 1st Amendment, performers tell federal judge

Reply in thread

As a parent I rather not have government tell me what is approved thing and what's not. I'm not LGBT and not interested in drag shows but honestly the whole thing is blown out of proportion.

I find it ridiculous that countries like Poland are heavily against LGBT, then the same people will turn on TV to watch cabaret (note the meaning in US is different than in Europe) and watch male comedians dressed as women for comedic effect (e.g. https://youtu.be/iM87cjLCCwI?t=63)

Don't take it too seriosly

I don't think they care, Russia is no longer communist.

To explain what I mean. I noticed that while term "tankies" is accepted as a term to refer to communists (particularly communists that would defend use of tanks on civilians), today's tankies are also defending Russia which isn't communist anymore (it's more fascist than anything). Even those on lemmygrad. It feels like it never was about communism, but it always was about totalitarianism and Soviets.

You’re stuck in here with me

LOL, this reminds me of my coworkers. Guy in his 50s, kids already grown up, very quiet, barely know anything about him. One time we had an event and wanted to carpool. We get all in, he turns the ignition and RAAAAAAAAHHHHH! Kind of surprised me and I learned to not assume too much.

Actually right now even democracy is considered a dirty word, they even say that US isn't democracy, but a republic (ignoring what republic is).

They already started conditioning their minions, that dictatorship isn't really all that bad.

The ironic thing is that the primary reason why communism is bad is that it normally comes together with totalitarism, and that's what they essentially arguing for.

NATO admiral warns of potential all-out war with Russia

Reply in thread

Russia doesn't need Ukraine on its own, they need Ukraine to get access Poland, Romania and Moldova.

They already switched into war time production, and if they manage to get Ukraine they only need a year or two to replenish all military equipment.

People really underestimate Russia and that's the worst thing you can do to get caught pants down. If Russia senses there's a chance to succeed they will move on.

Another thing the West seems to be ignoring is that they think the war is just what is happening in Ukraine, when the majority of their operation is disinformation, subversion, and destabilization.

The popularity of far right politicians (who for some reason are friendly toward Kremlin) or BRExit shows how effective it is.
