Lemmy is so good right now for no particular reason

I’m an info addict and I want to see twenty posts on a page, briefly scan through them and keep scrolling down, just droves and droves of headlines that I can react to and completely skip past reading the article and go straight into commenting on it like I’m an expert on this thing I didn’t even know about 5 minutes ago.
lol are you me?

I used to work in a call center that had some TVs placed sporadically throughout the call floor. It was up to the manager what they wanted to have play on the TV of their row. Some would play the generic company slideshow that showed random stats and quotes and corporate rah rah BS, but others were fine with normal TV like EPSN or whatever. My manager was the head of the department and said he was fine with us putting whatever we wanted on the TVs. Unfortunately, me and the people around me couldn't see our row's TV from our desk, but we could see the TV of the row next to us; however, that manager was a complete power-tripping asshole and only wanted the company slide-show.
I would always use the IR blaster on my phone to change the TV to ESPN when his back was turned and see how long it took him to notice. Whenever he did notice, he'd walk around super mad trying to figure out who did it but he never suspected me. Eventually he just gave up and just let the TVs stay on ESPN.
And that's the story of how I used the IR blaster on my phone to slowly bully the asshole manager into being slightly less of an asshole.

How are lemmy and other fediverse platforms profitable?
Reply in thread
Profit might not be the point, but it is going to cost time and resources to run an instance. Unless the admin is just planning on paying for everyone's ability to use Lemmy on their instance out of their own pocket, ads or subscriptions may be necessary. And depending on how much time and effort goes into keeping it up, it wouldn't be unreasonable for them to want to make a profit on it so they feel like it's worth the effort.
I'd hate for an instance to blow up in popularity only for the admin to decide it isn't worth the time/effort/cost and shuts it down.

Unfortunately for me, one of my favorite uses for reddit has been live game threads for various sports and that really only works with a larger user base. For instance, I follow the Seattle Mariners and I have found two different Lemmy instances for them. The one with the most subscribers (44) hasn't had a game thread posted in 13 days despite the Mariners having played like 10 games in that stretch. The other one has 9 subscribers, although it looks like someone has set up a bot to automatically post a game thread and a post-game thread; however, every single one I looked at has 0 comments.
I'm not gonna be able to pull the plug on reddit entirely until Lemmy gets a serious increase in users.

It feels like the same reason that Reels isn’t doing well, people who wanted TikTok would have already got TikTok, you can’t force Instagram users to like Twitter/TikTok but on their Insta account instead.
I'm never going to download or sign up for TikTok. I know Meta isn't really that great as far as privacy goes, but at least they don't share information directly with the CCP. Fuck the CCP. IG Reels works just fine for me. I actually can't stand the IG home feed because of the algorithm showing me what it wants to show me instead of a chronological timeline of the posts of the people I follow, so I mostly just use IG for stories and Reels.

I have xanthan gum in my pantry that I use for thickening/stabilizing and it would definitely serve the same function, although the ratios might need to be adjusted slightly (not as familiar with guar gum, so idk if they can be subbed 1:1)

Wouldn't it be nice if instead of just bars with alcohol, there were establishments for people to consume cannabis while eating, playing board games, and socializing?

the dev of Sync is making a Sync for Lemmy app. I'm assuming it's going to be a similar UI to the Reddit version, which I'm stoked about because that was the majority of my Reddit experience

I'm not super experienced with making pickles. Would you want to reheat the brine before adding back into the jar to better help it penetrate the pickles?
