What really is going on in the US right now? Is this worse than the first term? Why're legal people being kicked out? When is it time to really consider leave?
Reply in thread
Were they legal? No judgement from me either way, but if they were make sure you include it when you tell people. I have some folks I am scared for and everybody's argument to me has been "They're only taking felons" or "they're only taking illegals"
I don't think so. So if you see them take somebody who has papers tell everybody.

Just going to stick my reply on the top comment here, but may touch on some of the lower comments to help out.
Answering yes to the question "Are they afraid of possibly having a brief interaction with a neighbor" is going to be unique to the individual. I saw some mention of anxiety disorder down there, and while that may be the case for some, I wouldn't label myself with that and I see this as a good opportunity to caution against over generalization for these grey areas of life.
For me personally, I have a full time career that primarily involves interacting with people 95% of the time. When I get done working for the day... I'm all interacted out. So yeah I may not enter a room or exit my apartment when I know it's going to require more social interactions. I'm just tired. It's honestly easier for me to just wait a couple minutes so that I don't have to restart my decompression.

After living in the US for 35 years, these parents got deported to Colombia

What do illegal jmmigrants do to you? Seriously ask yourself what the impact of these people existing is on your daily life. The folks in this article specifically, came here, got jobs, paid taxes on their wages, and took those wages and contributed to their local economy. How is that any different than me just because I was born here?
They're willing to do jobs we aren't because they don't grow up with the quality of life and/or safety we were lucky enough to get handed just for popping out in the right place. Despite what you've been told they commonly are subject to payroll tax. Most of them are desperately trying to obtain paperwork, but our government says no over and over again. The fucking melting pot, right?
You've been propagandized to think immigrants did something to you. They didn't. The end game is going to be you and I shooting at each other in a civil war because the rich people said immigrants are bad. Please wake up. Please everybody wake up.

Administration Officials Believe Order Lets Immigration Agents Enter Homes Without Warrants

There's no rules anymore. If you find a rule that stops them from protecting the regime or executing the regime's objectives, they'll change it. There is no point clinging to any of these written rules. We are slowly entering a war zone. None of the people who could stop this are doing it. I will say this is my own opinion (for now) as a disclaimer... But the way I see it is this: if the military doesn't turn on trump then it will eventually become the responsibility of the citizens. We're frogs in boiling water and I am absolutely terrified.

Ethernet port being used while PC is turned off?
Reply in thread
Power to the port may be hardwired for that feature to exist even though you have it disabled. Usually older models, but some do stay on just from being powered.
If it's a privacy concern check at your router and see if it holds an address.

What would you like to see more of on Lemmy and/or the wider Fediverse?
Reply in thread
Came here to say this, but shorter. Imagine my surprise to see "Positivity" first word in the top comment. I know we don't all agree on everything, but the vibe on Lemmy (for me at least) seems to be share our views or shut up.
The other thing is how political everything seems to get. Even outside of political communities you see it seaping into the comments. I might be remembering wrong, but reddit didn't seem to have that issue (as much). If you weren't in a politically orriented community the mods kept that kinda talk out.
All that being said, I'm sticking with Lemmy. I don't hace any desire to go back to reddit even as a lurker. I hope lemmy gets nicer as more people join. I've embraced being downvoted. I will try to love communism and linux to a greater degree than I already do.

Elon Musk Was an Illegal Migrant Worker Who Abused his Student Visa When He Founded First Company
Reply in thread
My personal conspiracy theory is Elon is a Russian spy. If that turns out to be true then he wouldn't really have a first hand understanding since the FSB would find a way to fix his papers if needed.

How does this pic show that Elon Musk doesnt know SQL?
Might seem like a stupid question, but I'm in nostupidquestions sooo... Did Elon really do this tweet with the word "retard" in it? Obviously am on Lemmy so don't use Twitter.

Probably not as much as the people trying to protect their families. Average household 4-6 people inside? They'll send 24 then. Double that after the first agent casualty.

Is it a red flag if a potential employer rushes you?
I am a potential employer. Speaking on behalf of only myself, there are two reasons I may feel inclined to rush an applicant. If the unfilled position is causing hardship on operations or other team members (Like having someone having to fill the spot while I search) or if the intended start date falls towards the end of a current pay period. Because if the new hire doesn't have paperwork done by then it can slow down payroll for all of us.
I learned very quickly not to rush folks out of desperation, but honestly sometimes that does happen. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a terrible place to work. In my case our labor market is lacking viable applicants. It can sometimes take weeks or months before finding even a good interview. If I have somebody that hates overnights, but is working them to cover for a recent loss then you bet I will be motivated to fill the spot ASAP. It takes emotional control to make sure that doesn't turn into rushing the applicant.
These may not apply to your situation, but that's my two cents.

The term asset in espionage just refers to somebody who does is being utilized for active measures or intelligence collection. They manipulate those people all the time. In some cases assets may not even know they are providing intelligence or carrying out an agency's objectives.

Fuck. If they lose control of Trump they'll for sure skip to that step. I was thinking they'd spend the next few years working to keep him in power. But yeah if that option is out they only have finite time to execute.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 needs 64GB of RAM for ideal performance — oddly, the game install size is only 30GB

30GB to install then 100+ after you open the game and it downloads updates and scenery. Same deal as 2020.
