Could you check which version you're on? In Mlem 2.6 (released October 1st) we fixed an issue with cache pruning going off too frequently, which could have caused battery drain (PR). If you're not already on 2.6, updating could help. If you're on 2.6 and still seeing this, let me know your device/iOS version and I'll keep digging. If you were doing anything particular (scrolling images/videos? super long posts?), that would help too :)

We don't currently support community creation, but it's possible to add it. We tend to prioritise changes that many people will benefit from, and we just haven't got around to it.

In Mlem, go to the Settings tab. Then, tap on the link at the very top of the page with your account name. Then tap "Content & Notifications", and turn off "Show NSFW Content".

That setting will hide all NSFW content that is marked as such by the user who posted it. If you see some NSFW content that is not marked as NSFW, you should report the content so that the moderators can deal with it.

We're making several quality-of-life tweaks to the iPad layout in 2.0! So far, we've made the image viewer full-screen and updated the sidebar to look a bit more modern. Here's a sneak peek:

(This is all WIP, it might change. Ignore the lack of All/Local/Subscribed buttons, those will be back in before the first TestFlight).

We're also adding a setting that displays posts in a grid with two or more columns, which will make the posts look less wide in this format.

Longer-term we're considering some ways that we can improve the iPad layout as a whole - such as having a three-column layout - but there's some navigation problems to work out and we can't promise that anything like that will be in 2.0.

For context, currently 97.5% of active iOS users are on iOS 18 or above, meaning that 97.5% of iOS users are able to use Mlem.

Supporting a version incurs an ongoing development cost for us. Changes we make have to be tested on more versions, and we're limited in which of Apple's APIs we can use. Dropping support for older versions allows us to focus our time on making Mlem the best it can be for the majority of users, as a modern iOS app.

With our current development capacity, it is not feasible for us to re-add support for iOS 17. You can find more details by reading our compatibility plan here.

We have a very small developer team working in our free time, and none of us have any prior knowledge in the area of low-level markdown extensions. It’s very complex, and we’d probably never leave beta if making a perfect markdown renderer was on our requirement list, so we omitted it. It might be possible to work out given enough time, but that’s time that we chose to invest in other areas instead.

If you know of any other non-web apps (iOS or Android) that are able to correctly render all of Lemmy’s markdown, let us know. We may be able to learn from/use their implementation, depending on the license it’s distributed under. I haven’t seen any Lemmy clients that can do this yet.

This would certainly be a useful feature. Unfortunately, Apple does not make their translation API available for us to use, so we'd have to use someone else's API instead. I haven't looked too deeply into potential options just yet, but have created an issue here to keep track of the suggestion 👍

Spoilers, subscripts and superscripts don’t work, but everything else does.

Markdown in general is unfortunately rather difficult to render. We use an open-source treesitter that parses GitHub-flavored markdown, which is similar to Lemmy’s markdown. Fully supporting the Lemmy markdown specification (spoilers, for example) would probably require us to instead use a custom implementation built directly out of cmark.

There isn't a way to do this at the moment. Apollo had this feature, and we've been keeping track of the idea here. Unfortunately, this is tricky to implement because of limitations imposed by Apple's frameworks. It's certainly possible, but would take some time to work out and isn't on our immediate agenda.

Mlem v2 is a completely different codebase to Mlem v1, so bugs that exist on v1 are likely to be fixed in v2. We're aware of an Mlem v1 crash that occurs on iPad when Face ID Unlock is enabled - this is unfortunately difficult to fix because of the way Face ID Unlock works.

In iOS 18, Apple is introducing native support for Face ID Unlock in any app. This makes our own system redundant, so we'll be removing our version of the feature in favor of the more reliable iOS equivalent.
