While we eagerly await the second coming of Steam Machines, it's worth remembering what a gloriously awful mess Valve got itself in over a decade ago

Yes, it is worth it to remember.

They naively expected publishers and developers to give a shit.

But after that failure they worked hard for years and contributed and donated to open source projects.
That allowed Linux to become a true competitor in gaming space with zero vendor lock-in.

Whatever their reasons were, the results are objectively positive for nearly everyone.

"There are thousands of volunteers who donated their labour to Duo... Bit by bit all of our work was hidden from us as Duolingo became a publicly-traded company."

These volunteers didn't think about it in these terms.
They gave away their work for free to help people learn languages, and for a long time Duolingo seemed like the best platform for that.

Starting your own platform is much more difficult than contributing to an existing one that seems to be operated with some amount of goodwill...

Loving USA Culture

I mean, of course USA has culture - it's one of their most successful international exports!

I think when people complain about lack of culture they usually mean "old" culture, since USA as a country is still relatively young.

After a year in its company, I’ve done a complete 180 on my Steam Deck

When it originally launched, I feared it would go the same way as Valve's previous inventions in the VR

What the hell is she talking about?

Index still gets regular updates and it still doesn't really have any competition at its price point (Quest with its ridiculous account requirements doesn't count).

Just because Index was not a massive success due to its significantly higher cost doesn't mean it's a failure, and it's far from abandoned.

Bethesda is sending DMCA notices to a Ukrainian fighting the war in the frontlines to take down a classic (Fallout 1/2) engine emulator which doesn't use game files, ROMs, game code, textures, or musi

It's always annoying how "it's just a contractor/company working on their behalf" is used as an excuse.

No, this is on Bethesda.
They hired this copyright troll and they're responsible for fraudulent DMCA requests sent on their behalf.

They have enough money to either vet their contractors, or do the job themselves.

One person's inability to use a common device is not an excuse to make it worse for everyone else.

My parents are pretty incompetent when it comes to tech, but it wasn't difficult for them to understand not to install random shit and call if in doubt.
