Subreddits you are going to miss?

Just the specificity of communities you could find.

To name a few I've used frequently the past few months:

r/hardcore

r/doommetal

r/SuccessionTV

r/TheSmashingPumpkins

r/[my college]

r/[the town where I live]

I love lemmy but so far the userbase just isn't big enough to fill a lot of the niches I'm looking for. I'm excited to see the community grow though and I'm hopeful about the future.

[LIVE THREAD] Donald Trump's arraignment in Miami; his supporters expected to protest outside of courthouse

Reply in thread

Having people treated differently to achieve equal outcomes is what we strive for. When it's shown that minorities are discriminated against in hiring, people suggest affirmative action to level the playing field. When somebody is asked to testify again dangerous people, they're put in witness protection to be afforded the same security as any average citizen.

When somebody carries a unique cultural status, such that they would surely be killed if left to their own devices, that person is given protection to ensure that they live, and aren't handed a death sentence without trial. That's not what Russia does. Really, one could argue that "not letting a political figure get assassinated" is the exact opposite of what Russia does.

A Marimba I built last year - took me a bit over half a year to complete. 61 keys made of Padauk, all hand-tuned, on a frame of Red Oak and Walnut

Reply in thread

The tube length is related to pitch but it doesn't control the pitch. The reason they're all different lengths is because different length tubes resonate at different frequencies. So the tube under each "key" (is that what they're called?) is designed to resonate specifically at the pitch produced by that key.

Reddit habit is hard to break.

Believe me, I know. I've tried and failed to quit at least 10 times now (everytime I come back it eventually just becomes a place for me to argue with strangers). I'm hoping my displeasure with their recent dealings will be enough to keep me off for good, and its definitely looking like Lemmy can fill the void (hopefully in a more healthy way).

But yeah I'm gonna miss using Reddit to answer all my Google questions, or to hear what people are saying about whatever new song I've discovered, even from its a tiny obscure band nobody's heard of. The scale and scope of Reddit was a huge part of it's value.

Unabomber Ted Kaczynski found dead in US prison cell

There's also this passage: "It is true that not all was sweet- ness and light in primitive societies... transexuality was fairly common"

I could maybe ignore his blatant bigotry if there was anything meritous about his manifesto, but he says nothing that hadn't already been said more competently by philosophers before him, and that hasn't since been more effectively communicated than in the movie Fight Club.

Electric vehicles alone can’t solve transportation’s climate problems: to cut heat-trapping emissions, we also need to reduce car use.

Reply in thread

Regardless of the fuel, single-passenger vehicles are an incredibly inefficient mode of transportation. There's no reason for many cities and city centers to be as car-centric as they are, and any energy savings that could be achieved with EVs in these cities would only be multiplied if wide roads were replaced with walkable paths and effective public transport.

My biggest problem (as an engineer) is that the hype around EVs ignores the possibility that there are better solutions. It's easy to get invested in a cool idea but you can't fixate on it and forget about the problem that you set out to solve in the first place.
