My landlord partnered with a financing company - I can pay $15/month for the luxury of making weekly payments on my rent

after looking at their site....oh fuck no.

they offer lines of credit to pay your rent. but you have to pay back said credit by the end of the month so....why? If you're having trouble paying your rent getting a line of credit to cover it and then having to pay back said credit by the end of the month on top of a percentage AND membership fee it just sounds exactly like a payday loan where you KNOW they hope you roll over so you'll never be able to catch up.

A new ‘solution’ to student homelessness: a parking lot where students can sleep safely in their cars

"We have the money to fix the problem, we really just don't want to."

Everyone always says homelessness is a complicated issue due to addiction and mental health and then that's it. full stop. in many peoples heads those TWO groups are the ONLY groups that make up the homeless population. but after volunteering I know better. you have students, you have women escaping domestic abuse, you have the elderly who can no longer afford rent, you have kids who are LGBTQ+ that have been disowned by their families, you have refugees, and you have people who simply lost their jobs and fell through the cracks.

allowing students to sleep in their cars is not a solution. it's another band aid applied to a massive gaping wound. And this isn't just an America issue, several countries are guilty of band aid "solutions". I mean hell here in Canada the government is talking about investing $1billion into AI for fucks sake. That $1billion could be better served in providing people with homes. There's never any long term planning here, always short term "solutions". Wouldn't it be advantageous to governments to ensure people have homes in order to get them back into the workforce thus paying taxes.

Call me a heart on the sleeve soft liberal all you want but I'm of the firm belief that EVERYONE deserves and has the right to a home and food and if they can't provide either of those things for themselves than we as a society, as a community, need to provide it for them. And I firmly believe that the majority of our society feel the same and wouldn't mind their tax dollars going towards that. It's just that the powers that be don't want that.

they don't. I mean for example Amazon puts all new hires on "on call" status for like a week every month. the LAST people I would want working On Call and waking up at 2am to try and solve something are fresh grad hires. You can actually watch videos on youtube of new grad amazon hires doing this, they actually document themselves, and the vast majority of them are "well it's 1am and I just got a call...I'm going to try and fix this ticket but really I have no idea what I'm doing" annnnnd generally nothing gets fixed or they break it worse. So they end up being sleep deprived, going into the office the next day and sleeping at whatever workstation they can find available and it leaves you wondering "what's the point?"

I personally am of the belief that being on call for stuff like this is pointless when you're world wide and could literally just transition the stuff to a different team in some other part of the world but I guess Amazon treats it as a sort of initiation process or whatever.

Reddit account allegedly belonging to Ghislaine Maxwell added back to r/WorldNews moderation team after she got transferred to lower security prison

shouldn't surprise anyone considering spez used to mod r/jailbait.

So wouldn't surprise me if she and her husband were buddy-buddy with Spez at some point. she clearly is still buddy-buddy with someone in the admin team or higher or simply several reddit mods.

Reddit is a pedophile, facist, and zionist haven. If you're still using reddit guess what? you're having a pint of beer in a pedophile-nazi bar. get off it.

Bill Gates is a horrible person.

Watch the TV movie from the late 90s "Pirates of Silicon Valley" which pretty much paints both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as really shitty people. I mean just look at what Gates did with the Altair. Said he had an operating system, didn't have an operating system, and what have you.

Then there's the whole Xerox Park thing where neither Apple nor Microsoft would be where they're at today without the engineers at Xerox who were pretty much forced to hand over their stuff because Xerox execs didn't see value in a GUI and Mouse. Gates and Jobs both were more than happy to go in there and pillage what was developed in order to create Windows and The Macintosh/MacOS

Kamala Harris tells BBC she may run for president again

If the Democrats run the same platform/campaign as they did before she'll lose again.

Democrats REALLY need to get it through their thick skulls that the days of campaigning on working alongside people across the aisle are over. that the days of uniting a country are over. Remember, the other side has already KILLED democratic politicians. they even KILL people on their own side they don't agree with.

they need to take the position that while a certain group of people will never support them, they'll still work for them but not with them.

72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to study

I don't know if I would say they're a monopoly there are other options/store fronts out there...it's just that the vast majority outside of GOG suck. in fact they all suck OTHER than Steam and GOG.

And as a Linux user...I ain't got much of a choice. Steam, now, just works for me. I don't even have to toggle the compatibility option anymore or hell even mess around with proton if I don't want to. install steam via whatever package manager or flatpak and i'm off to the races.

Anything other than Steam is unlikely to work. EA, Epic, and Microsoft have all essentially told me they don't want my business simply because I use Linux.

Trump attends another extravagant party at Mar-a-Lago as thousands, including government employees, hit food banks in shutdown

I'm not an American but I can kinda understand why. Gotta tow that line. A good chunk of Americans are on the verge of homelessness and all their healthcare is tied directly to their employment. So rioting, looting grocery stores, etc runs a risk of not only being arrested or killed but also losing their jobs and thus losing their healthcare. The US Government has done a brilliant job over the decades of establishing a system preventing people from revolting.

Now one can argue that other countries would revolt and they'd also lose said things mentioned above because how can you get healthcare if you're actively fighting the system that provides it? But Americans don't know that. They've been conditioned to, again, tow the line.

Add to the fact there's zero leadership for said revolt. Literally none. This isn't like Black Lives Matter where there was an organization rallying everyone. I mean the proof is in the pudding just look at the No Kings protests. when do those happen? on the weekend, on a Saturday, when the vast majority are off work.

Now if those protests happened at 11am on a Tuesday I'd be impressed, but as it stands right now? that ain't happening any time soon. They need leadership, they have none.

Facing problems using Bazzite for software development

I....I don't understand. Why would you use Bazzite for software development and not gaming when user is not a gamer but just likes KDE?

you can literally put KDE on anything. Bazzite isn't friendly to installing anything that isn't a flatpak or whatever.

Just use a different distro. you don't need Bazzite. Switch them to like Fedora KDE or something.

And to people in this thread trying to push a camel through a pin hole...why? you're talking about setting up VMs and Distroboxs or just using flatpaks on Bazzite when the most painless solution is to just switch distros.

You picked the wrong distro, just switch them to something more appropriate for what they want to do.
