How ‘For You’ feeds amplify outrage: A study of X finds that engagement-based feeds are more likely to push provocative content than posts aligned with users’ stated values.

Well, it is "For You" then, isn't it? Not "Here's what you want" but "here's what the algorithm has chosen For You". For You: a bespoke, tailored, never-ending torrent of content that we have picked out based on the relentless automated psychoanalysis we carry out every second of ever day based on every swipe, zoom and key press to keep you outraged, distracted and malleable with the absolute bare minimum of entertainment and dopamine. Bon appetit.

It seems crazy that a company that's only really known for cars, motorbikes, tuning forks, heat pumps, brake pads, pens, tractors, fertilizer, display panels, outboard motors, pneumatic systems, oil tankers, furniture, locomotives, bricks, solar panels, ATVs, generators, hot air balloons, dinghies, hydrogen fuel cells, submarines, crop dusters, jet engines, cultivators, hedge trimmers, lawnmowers, precision optics and robots would suddenly pivot to rockets.

What is a well known 'public secret' in the industry you work in that the majority of outsiders are unaware of?

Outsourced IT provider here:

90% of businesses have basically zero IT security. Leaked passwords in regular use and no process or verification for password resets. As soon as someone complains that 2FA or password rotation is difficult it gets dropped. Virtually all company data is stored on USB keys, plaintext hard drives and on staff's personal home devices.

The reason they're not constantly having their data stolen is because no-one cares about the companies either.
