Tuya devices popularity

I am surprised to see how overwhelmingly popular Tuya devices are for Home Assistant users. It appears that devices using the official integration are very combersome to setup, they are cloud dependent, and they will often need to be re-setup due to a re-acceptance of the ToS.

Are people actively buying these devices? Are a lot of homes setup with legacy Tuya devices?

I personally have no Tuya devices in my home and after reading the integration page, I would actively avoid them. https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/tuya

The integration page shows that Tuya is used by 29.2% of active installations and the number of devices from the graph show a huge gap between Tuya and all other devices. This leads me to think that these devices would be prioritized by the developers. Am I missing something? Are these devices so cheap that they are just worth it for many to deal with the consequences of the cloud and apparent hassle of setup?

Pi-hole FTL v6.5, Web v6.4.1 and Core v6.4 Released!

Highlights Security fixes

Two security vulnerabilities in the web interface have been patched in this release.

https://github.com/pi-hole/web/security/advisories/GHSA-6xp4-jw73-f4qp: fixed with d328f14
https://github.com/pi-hole/web/security/advisories/GHSA-8rw8-vjgp-rwj6: fixed with 1a0c6f4

Performance improvements

Faster startup (FTL #2725)

FTL now imports historical queries from the database asynchronously on startup. Previously, DNS resolution was blocked until the entire query history had been loaded into memory. Now, FTL begins accepting DNS queries immediately and imports history in a dedicated background thread. The garbage collector is held off until the import is complete to ensure data consistency.

Low-memory hardware optimizations (FTL #2757)

A new database.forceDisk configuration option forces FTL’s in-memory SQLite3 database to live on disk instead of in RAM. This can notably reduce FTL’s memory footprint, which is beneficial on resource-constrained hardware such as older Raspberry Pi models. On NVMe-backed systems no measurable performance difference was observed, though some slowdown may be seen on slower storage.

Faster gravity updates (FTL #2710)

Several cumulative efficiency gains have been applied to the main domain validation loop that runs during pihole -g. While each individual improvement is modest, they add up across every entry in your blocklists and allowlists:

A lookup table now validates domain characters using a single comparison per character, replacing multiple branching comparisons
IP address testing is short-circuited: IPv4 tests only run if the token starts with a digit, and IPv6 tests only run if a colon is present within the first 5 characters
The unicode BOM check is now performed once per file rather than once per line

In testing with ~5 million domains across several lists, gravity update time dropped from ~27s to ~23s (roughly a 16% reduction in real time, and ~22% reduction in CPU time).

DDNS backup endpoints possible?

I have 3 DDNS hostnames from 3 separate providers. I have had issues with at least 2 of them where the updater got messed up, or the service required a login to keep it from going "dormant". This was slow for me to catch...

Can I add multiple "endpoints" to my config file to get some redundancy, or will this just cause problems?

Need to buy more blades, but I do not want to experiment.

I may be lazy, but I also do not want to eff up my face experimenting. I got lucky with Voskod blades several years ago finding that they were cheap and easy on my face. Half way through my 100 pack of Voskod blades I also got a 100 pack of feather blades. I found that the Voskod were nicer to my face, and felt better on the 2nd and 3rd use compared with feather. Though, I will admit that feather blades seem to work better when I have overgrown my beard and the blade is brand new.

For several reasons, including the fact that I do not see Voskod blades easily obtainable, I want to replace them with something that feels similar. I would prefer the blades to not be made in Russia, not to be coated in teflon, and to cost less than feather blades.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Unifi Express initial observations

I bought a Unifi Express to upgrade my parents in law from an old orbi mesh system that I handed down to them. I'm hoping this will improve their network, and allow me to remotely help them more easily.

After receiving the device, I decided to first test it out in my network to see if it was a viable replacement for my USG-3P and my RPI4-4GB. TL;DR: it is not.

My setup: 1x U6 Lite 1x AC-AP Lite 1x AC-Mesh 1x Nano HD 1x USW-8-60W 1x Lite 8 POE 1x Flex Mini 1x USG-3P 1x Raspberry PI 4-4GB running pihole, Homebridge, controller 1x Raspberry PI zeroW running redundant pihole and critical redundant homebridge items Centurylink Symmetric gigabit fiber

I have around 35 smart home wifi devices and in generally around 55-60 total clients connected to my network.

I loaded a backup from my RPI4 controller to get started.

My initial attempt just failed, as I tried to like set it up while connected to my existing network. I was also just not used to dealing with a UnifiOS console device and the way that it works.

Loading the backup took like 30 minutes of an NFL football game, so I guess like 1 hour, but I did not time it exactly.

After getting it up and running I can no longer get the network application to load in my browser, it just keeps loading forever.

With nothing else happening, SSH to the console and running TOP shows that unifi-network-b process is using between 20-91% of the CPU. Load averages are around 4.5. The one good thing is that I was getting around the 940Mbps up and down at first, but it always starts out a bit slow at around 45Mbps, then it gets faster after about a second. Today I'm seeing 940 down and 500 up. Not sure if it is ISP or the device just getting slow. When I was using my USG-3P I normally see the symmetric 940 jump up to full speed immediately, without the initial hang up at 45Mbps.

Ultimately, it is nice to see that it can prioritize the internet to do its primary job when it is just completely swamped by relatively modest network I have setup.

This shows me that my true path forward is definitely the UXG-Lite while maintaining my RPI4 for the controller. I have no urgency to replace my USG-3P, but I would like to have the UXG-Lite at least available for shipping before the USG-3P crapps out so I am not caught with my pants down. I do have the ISP router I can pop in for an emergency, but I would like to stay in the ecosystem if possible.

I will post another update after I setup the gateway at my parents in law's house.

Ubiquiti stocking issues

Ubiquiti makes some pretty great products, but too many of them are constantly out of stock. I was definitely giving them a pass in 2020, 2021 etc, but this is starting to look like it is now intentional. They are simultaneously out of the express, uxg lite, UDR, and the USG-3P. The only non rack router that is available in the store is the UDM, which they are no longer advertising without searching for it.

I know that the express and uxg lite are brand new, so maybe they can get a pass. The UDR has been out for well over a year. The UDM is just sort of too expensive to be bought without wifi6, and appears to be on the way out.

Further, the U6-lite is also sold out. This just forces people to pay an extra $30 for the U6+ with wifi6 on the 2.4GHz radio, and I'm not really aware of anything that uses wifi6 on 2.4GHz (maybe new mobile phones etc, but they will be defaulting to 5GHz...).

Ubiquiti even hired some B list actors to do an "Apple like" advertisement on their home page for the unifi express. Why? If you cannot produce enough to sell to people, why advertise for it? Is it to draw people in, and then force them to buy something more expensive?

Unifi Network 8.x for self hosted Raspberry PI

Somewhat recently I had to update to the 64 bit version of Raspbian OS to use Unifi Network 7.x. I had to use the tutorial linked from pimylifeup. Today the apt update switched to the 8.x branch of distribution and it said my architecture of armhf was not supported. To fix it, I just had to edit the file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/100-ubnt-unifi.list from "arch=armhf" to "arch=arm64". If you were already running the latest 7.x then this should get you up and running. If you are upgrading from something older, visit the linked tutorial to get everything you need to be updated.

Yuba Spicy Curry Kickstand Hack

The stock kickstand on my Yuba Spicy Curry has been feeling shorter for some time lately, and the bike has not been staying put on slight inclines. Recently the right plastic piece fell off and then I realized it had been ground down to the metal. So I glued it back on upside down, and ripped the left side off and did the same. I expect this will give me a few months to figure something more permanent out.

I was just at my local bike shop for my first service appointment. While there they informed me that the plastic end pieces are out of stock at Yuba...

Looking further into replacements, this is all I could really find on the web: https://www.amazon.com/Shepherd-Hardware-9115-1-Inch-Plastic/dp/B000I17D38/ and that thing is for chairs.

Truly, I would like to find something more substantial, and a little thicker to give me an extra 1/4 inch lift to keep the bike stable on uneven ground and steeper grades.

FYI, this kickstand is stock on the spicy curry, but it is either included or compatible with the sweet curry, mundo, boda, and kombi.

Cherry Creek Bike Trail Status

cross-posted from: https://centennialstate.social/post/24475

Wanted to check on the trail status before trying to use it today. This popped to the top of DDG. There is also an interesting chart for the level of the cherry creek. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/06713500/#parameterCode=00065&period=P7D

Bottom line is that today the trail is only flooded in one place, but muddy in several.
