Taking any critic's opinion as the truth is crazy. Do we really just not know what a review is? Sure they say whether they liked something or not, but the point is that they describe it well enough that you can make a more educated guess about whether you'll like something or not regardless of what their score is. He does a decent job of that.

Depends what kind of technological advancement and what scale. New graphics tech for games? Sure, a small team might do better at communicating and getting features out quicker. A new, bigger kind of particle collider for high energy physics experiments? You need a good team just for one of the many of kinds of magnets, another just for a particular kind of detector, and so on for thousands of components (and advancements in software for all of the above) which need to be pushed forwards.

If you wanna apply some prescriptive values to that based on some moral ideas you have and say that common behaviour is wrong you're gonna need to be consistent about the consequences. Yes, easily. Additionally, they can control the search engines which lead there or not, the commonly used platforms for code sharing so that development is more difficult, and so forth. They have an incredible advantage through economy of scale. The barrier to entry for putting any information on the internet may not be very high, but making it findable and accessible has a very high barrier, and relies on corporate-controlled platforms.
