This is literally the reason why I switched over to Debian. At least back then, snaps wouldn't work if the home folders were not under /home/, breaking all computers on the system I helped run.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not hype about moving from a great instance, but I feel this has been a great demonstration of why the federation is a good idea. All in all, migrating has been a fairly smooth experience, and most communities are either on other places or are moving fairly structured. Previously, closure of services or enshitification has caused me to spend weeks to months hunting for new places to read. This has been a great experience in most ways, and I think I can live happily jumping from instance to instance like this for a few years until I give up and set up my own.

It varies a bit from country to country, but the overall idea is that cooperation between strong national labor unions, employers and the government can lead to a solid wellfare state for all. Some parts of our workers rights are therefore kept in collective agreements instead of laws. This is of course not a perfect system, and we regularly have problems with locally sourced super-rich as well, but most people here agree it creates a better society, even for "regular" millionaires.

One of the cornerstones for this to work is strong nationwide unions to create a sane balance of power. Much of this current conflict could be solved if someone got through to Musk that the right to organize is holier to us in the nordics than gun rights are to Americans.

Sometimes it randomly stops synchronizing without telling me, and I need to physically move between machines and locations to get everything back online again. Network issues can happen to any vendor, but why is there no notification for days at a time about it?

Somewhat related, it happens that overdrive fails to read timestamps and deletes my work because another computer without it comes online. That's fairly unacceptable from a synchronization tool that demands to replace my hard drive.

The climate here is not economically competitive, we have fairly large toll walls and subsidies to protect local farmers. In a completely free market, most food production would be outcompeted by foreign goods. This does of course make food much more expensive for us than strictly needed, but it also gives a safe supply.

I think fairphone has support for a foss os out of the box, other brands will take some more work and jailbreaking to get it working.

There is hope. Here in Norway, we have a parallel system called BankAxept handling card and online payments within the country. Most/all debit cards are dual, and Visa is only used as a fallback. I believe lobbying for a similar system in other countries, or better yet for the EU as a whole, would be a good way to get started.

Norway is good if you get a job before moving. The weather, people, food and welcome is a bit cold, but life is good.
