There Are Signs of Serious Trouble in the Data Center Industry: "People aren’t just dropping their shorts for data centers anymore."

Basicly you buy the domain that you like. Cloudflare sells them at cost. Porkbun has a huge verierty to choose from. After you buy the domain you will have a control panel where you can configure “where” the domain points to.

After you find an email provider that supports custom domains and sign up they will provide you with where to point the MX (email part of the domain) record. Typically some site they control.

In the control panel you point your domain MX records at the address they provide and you can start receiving email at the email of your choice.

After you confirm you can receive email you should then add stuff to your dns control panel like DKIM and SPF so your email won’t be marked as spam. The email provider will give you specific strings to copy paste.

If the email provider starts misbehaving or you just want to switch it’s just a matter of signing up somewhere else and re pointing the domain MX records while you keep the same email. It’s a little more complicated but I means you truly own your email. That and it will typically cost a little bit of money.

YSK that some internet browsers respect your privacy. Some internet browsers don't.

This is an ad for Brave. The creator of this site is Arthur Edelstein who is employed by Brave. 🙄

I am so sick of “privacy guides” that subtly try to push a crypto bro ad company browser.

Brave is a crypto bro run ad company whos CEO is openly anti LGBT+.

The OG poster is a 12 day old account with a lot of submissions to try to hide that. I could easily write a bot to do the same to give “credibility”.

Redis is no longer OSS

For the record. The SSPL that Redis switched to while technically not recognized by the OSI really isn’t bad at all.

It’s exactly like the AGPL except even more “powerful”. Under the SSPL if you host redis as a paid service you would have to open source the tooling you use to manage those hosted instances of redis.

I don’t see why anyone but hyper scalers would object. It’s a shame that the OSI didn’t adopt it.

Forgejo forks its own path forward

Reply in thread

Because gitea is fully the victim of corporate capture. Any PRs that make gitea better in a way that would reduce the main corporate “sponsor” profit are rejected.

The company has a conflict of interest with the community and it shows. Forgejo is sponsored by a non profit open source cooperative.

How exactly did Reddit become a top website and what does Lemmy need to do to eventually get there?

I think we should prioritize SEO.

If you get a link to a Lemmy post you can’t see the contents nor the comments of the post until you click a further link. Or at least I can’t.

And that means google can’t either.

We need to get to the point where people are adding “Lemmy” to their search posts like they do for Reddit today.

Doing a google search for “best budget backpack Lemmy” should bring up results like “best budget backpack Reddit” does today.

"Free" as in royalty-free

I have mixed feeling here.

On one hand avif is a libre format.

On the other hand:

  1. Avif has MAJOR limitations for a long term use (i.e. 65.538x 65.538 max resolution among other things)
  2. JpegXL has REVERSIBLE in place conversion to and from jpeg. You can convert jpegs into jpegXLs and gain the size benefits. You can undo the change and convert jpegXLs back into original jpegs all losslessly.
  3. JpegXL has progressive loading which supports people on slower internet speeds. AVIF does not.

Like I want to like avif but it’s hard for it to compete here I think. It’s like cheering for Theora over x265 just because it’s libre. Ideologically yes it makes sense to do so but good god is x265 better than Theora. (Not saying Theora is a representative open video codec though) Just that JpegXL is that much better.

When people complain about systemd "violating the unix philosophy", this is what they actually mean

When you hate something so much you have to find weird corner cases to support your views. Even then the way described isn’t how someone who knows that they are doing would do.

The best way for an unprivileged user to manage a service is for that user to run it. That way you inherit the correct permissions / acls / selinux contexts.

The command to do so is:

systemctl --user start the_service.service

It's easier to remember the IPs of good DNSes, too.

I think it’s worth taking the time to learn IPv6 property. If you have a good understanding of IPv4 it shouldn’t take you more than an afternoon.

Eliminating NAT and just using firewall rules (ie what NAT does behind your back) is incredibly freeing.

I don’t get people complaining about typing out IPs. I like to give all of my clients full FQDNs but you don’t have to. Just using mDNS would be enough to avoid typing a bunch of numbers.

German network operators requested national regulator to exclude Router Freedom from fiber networks

Good god no.

Getting my own modem and using my own router was the only way I could:

  1. Get a non CG-NAT IPv4 address
  2. Set up port forwarding for my ipv4 stack
  3. set up firewall rules for my ipv6 stack
  4. Use a non trash tier wireless access point.

The box they gave me had no configuration options outside of renaming the SSID and was only able to do dual stack light. Ridiculous.
