welp, Patreon just destroyed my stable income after a decade on the platform - what now

the artist, who is awesome https://jenniegyllblad.co.uk/ has had issues as a nsfw artist on patreon for awhile. she used to do subs by page. so if she had a productive month she made more money. if her adhd brain glitched she didnt feel bad about low output because you didnt pay for content you missed. then patreon did a patreon and just did away with that whole sub model. so she spent the past several months standing up her own website and fighting payment processors who dont like nsfw, to go back to a more diy model.

edit: though this specific video looks to be on the ios app store issue. its hard to keep track of how many different fuck you's have been dealt out by companies taking bigger cuts once you're locked in.

the .world autist community has gotten a couple linux questions and you know what happens. people answered the question, in the info dumpy yet polite and helpful way possible. maybe we just need to spin up an 'ask an autist about linux' community somewhere. "we'll answer your question along with 12 others you didn't even know you had" kinda thing.

We might want to consider Defederaton of Lemmy.ml

I don't think anything significant would be lost by dumping ml. two years ago sure, the platform was too small but now ml is just annoying. I don't know how the governance of that sever is set up. but if nutomic has control of the domain, its more a question of when will he decide to change ml rules. I trust ada to make the call when federation with ml becomes a problem. guess i'm just chiming in to reaffirm that for when the time comes. don't know how lemmy as a platform grows long term if nutomic retains any level of control over it. but i'll probably just be following you fuckin weirdos onto the next platform so it's not that big a deal. maybe it could be a nostalgic return to internet forums.

How Spotify's algorithm is destroying the music industry

the artist's website (or actual indy label), bandcamp then piracy in that order for me. if i can pay the artist, i'll pay the artist. then it goes on my jellyfin server. bandcamp and the brooklynvegan have had some great lists. my kid has recently discovered music is more than background noise in video games and thinks vinyl is cool though. he's hooked hard on rise aginst so i've had to add the local record shop then ebay into the mix. my bank account isnt happy and i will likely buy badtimerecords entire vinyl catalog for myself now. dont let your kids get into vinyl folks its a fucking trap!

How do you hold a pen?

it's not so much an autism specific thing but it is definitely a "you will behave in this exact way or else" thing. i recall in the 90s being sent to the office, having my parents called and routinely guilted. for using 'the cross thumb' in this image with the paper horizontal while writing. and a few other on here while drawing. then i got out of school and was told there isnt one way to hold a pencil and i may never stop being angry about this.

Societal rules

no thank you. being a decent person isnt transactional. not bartering over which groups someone can still treat like shit for fun. and being the kind of obsessive who tracks every local beatle or makes a youtube series about obscure shit. isnt the same thing as being someone who need to knock others down to feel strong.

How do you all feel about AI generated art? (rule)

a human manipulating a generated image still doesnt make it art. it can be a nice picture and the tech behind making it can be neat, but it's not art. that said i just dont engage on posts i know are ai content. presenting a generated image without being clear about it is just being a dick. it dosesnt have to be in the title but it should be aknowledged. i dono if a full ban is needed but if i wanted my feed full of slop i'd be subbed to communites for ai, or .world's 196. this place seems more about snark and joy, which ai rarely brings out.

Usernames using randomized nonsense

some people don't like personalizations. this is the first account in at least 10 yrs i picked a username for. normally it's just the string a password generator spit out. this time, i guess i figured after surving 18 months on world before deleting the account and moving. i could put 5 seconds into picking a name, since i'll likely be on lemmy until it dies. at some point in the next year i may add the word 'no' to my bio but thats an excessive amount of personalization for me.

his current mod practices are not my point. and he's already banned from here, nutomic isnt a problem here for us in this moment. but if he retains control of the ml server/domain in some way. his responses to db0 definitely show him obsfuscating, not being naive or uninformed. when the blowback from his own statements causes him to drop the mask full-time. ml rules could become whatever he decides and the mod team becomes whatever he needs to enforce that. if the ml server governance is designed in a way to protect against that, great! the odds of it going fully hostile are lower.

At school were you on the "gifted and pleasure to teach" end or "would do well if applied self and stopped getting distracted"?

the second for sure. once a year there'd be that teacher who'd try to connect and it always went the same way. they'd assume i was feeling insecure about my ability and statements like "i hate touching this paper" or "grades are meaningless nonsense" were part of that. they needle me until i said fine and did a weeks worth of class material in one sitting. then they go "oh see this is amazing you'd be a straight A student if you applied yourself". meanwhile my stress level is at an 11 from all the tactile sensery hell. and from that point on i'd just ditch their class.
