The EU proposal to scan all your WhatsApp chats is back on the agenda

Thanks to Patrick Breyer for reporting on this and techradar for picking it up. I wish the Pirate Party get more people into the parliament next election, so they can influence against such surveillance legislation.

Lets hope that the representatives of the countries have some common sense and vote against this. Or that they at least remember that Signal and Whatsapp said that they will be forced to leave the European market and that their voters will surely remember who was responsible for that.

To explain this to the uninitiated: (First follow another explanation of the original combo)

In Magic spells are not in effect immediately, instead they go on the stack, before they are resolved. Spells from a stack are resolved in LiFo order, so last in, first out. Instants, like Gut Shot, can be put on the stack at any time by any player (simplified).

So Enemy gets his 21 mana with channel, you let that resolve, he has 1 life. He pumps it all into the fireball, now you act. While fireball is on the stack you cast Gut Shot, paying with 2 life of your 20. It goes on the stack. Your enemy hopefully has no response, without any mana left in his pool, and he looses his last life and the game.

When a player looses the game all his spells are removed from the stack, so you really win and there is no draw.

You stopped his combo with 4 cards worth unreal amounts of money with a single card worth about 50ct.

Also she herself said that Otto Hahn deserved the Nobel prize. She and Otto Frisch (far kess known than she is!) did the theoretical work regarding the physics behind it.

But Pauli got the physics prize that year, and he sure deserves it. Maybe one of the later prices could have been awarded to her.

Can we afford to be afraid of nuclear power?

Reply in thread

I suppose you know don't about the superbattery projects already implemented, e.g. the one in Australia and its huge benefits to their grid?

About sodium based batteries which have become commercially viable in recent years?

And because of the implication also that nuclear reactors produce extreme waste of building materials (e.g. Greifswald, ran for 26 years, dismantling in operation since 35 years and projected to last till 2040 at least, because higher contamination than estimated) and mining for them is at least as bad as for Lithium?

If not ask the search engine/ai of your choice.

Epic Game Store’s free giveaways just cause a huge spike in Steam sales, reveals New Blood CEO

This is the same effect which makes piracy beneficiary for developers. The EU financed a big study on it, expected to confirm claims that i causes high losses for creators. After they got unwanted results they shelved it silently. The Pirate Party then brought it to light.

Free advertising is always good and many people who have a no hassle option to own the game and to reward the creator will do so.

Germany's phase-out of nuclear energy 'irreversible,' says Merz

The effects of the energy crisis were also noticeable for uranium oxide which also reached its 11 year peak during the crisis. More than doubling in price.

What didn't increase its cost during the crisis? Renewables. As @[email protected] said investing in those would have reduced the effects of the crisis noticeably. An example for this is Denmark. Also note that cooling reactors becomes more difficult/expensive with climate change. See energy prices in France in the summer.

Also in Ukraine you can right now see another disadvantage of atomic plants: They are huge strategic targets.

Now to the word "emerging"

This was built entirely in 16 months, from groundbreaking to connection to the grid. For the cost of a single nuclear reactor you can build 30 of these. And opposed to nuclear technology batteries are still making remarkable progress in their affordability.

Edit: Btw the battery also uses below 0,5% of the area of a usual nuclear plant.

Has anyone switched to Jolla C2 / SailfishOS?

Hi,

I haven't done that but I used (and use) Linux smartphones like the N9 and N900 and because I need modern connectivity and a decent camera I got a used Pixel 5 with Graphene. My wife uses an XperiaXA2 with Sailfish so I know the system quite well.

So to answer you:

  • Android Apps mostly work reasonably well under Sailfish, expect difficulties with some banking apps and greater difficulties with apps that require Google Play (there are hacks to get microG installed, by now even somewhat officially supported, but she never asked for me to try that). Generally this will make the transition quite easy as you can continue to use old apps if you avoided google dependency on Android. Use f-droid and Aurora store to install them.
  • Expect to miss many things from android and falling back to app support to fill your needs. (e.g. good navigation app), but as that works generally well that is no problem. Over time your will replace some of those, but not all, with native apps.
  • Expect many features to just work which under android are a hassle. E.g. caldav sync to nextcloud or full and automated wireless backups via rsync and a script.
  • Never expect completely smooth sailing. While there is a constant stream of updates the system never reached the polished state of android. Most bugs can be worked around but are annoying. Example: On the XA2 the android app support sometimes looses internet connectivity. Workaround: Stop app support (there is a gui button for that), disable SIM slot 1, enable SIM slot 1, enable app support. Once you get used to it, its quick. Or the browser does not work with some websites and crashes, but you can just use an android browser.
  • Battery life with stopped android app support is amazing, even after years of usage the phone only needs to be charged once every few days. Battery life with app support enabled is still quite good with 1-2 days on moderate use.
  • Photo quality is lacking compared to current android standards. This may be better on newer phones like the C2.

Overall I can recommend it if you are willing to read the forums to find the workarounds and willing to make some compromises. She uses it as daily driver for many years and has no desire to replace it yet. The community behind sailfish is awesome and the developers often listen to user desires.

If you have solar panels you can turn on appliances or compute intensive tasks if they produce power.

If you have humidity problems, an alarm can remind you if aerating makes sense. If you additionally have a bad landlord you can prove you aerated three times per day and still mold did grow, so he has to fix something!

If you have a home theatre one button can dim the lights, turn on the TV, and close the blinds.

You can have your motion controlled floor lights only turn on red in the night.

Small things which are in total useful.

With HomeAssistant its easy to do without any cloud connection.

It was also a double standard, as import of French electricity from nuclear power was still imported.

In 2022 Germany exported 15.3 TWh to France.
Of course there have been days where imports were made, as the power flow varies widely depending on a huge number of circumstances, but all in all the often repeated claim that Germany relies on nuclear power from France is plain wrong. Correct is that France was very reliant on other countries to get trough the hot summer due to their plants failing.

You can see the full data here: https://www.smard.de/page/en/topic-article/207552/209668/the-electricity-market-in-2022

Can we afford to be afraid of nuclear power?

Maybe you should look the mentioned case up before making your argument.

Greifswald had 6 blocks in 1990: 4 blocks which were in very bad state, cracks in the pressure chamber with a high probability to release nuclear material into the environment. Due to these faults they were already shut down since 1987, except block 1 which was run against the recommendations of the security agency. To continue running them they would have to be rebuilt, completely. This includes dismantling them which as we now know would have taken many decades! Block 5 and 6 were under construction. (Started in 1970, planned for 1980) But mistakes were made during the construction, postponing it till 1990, when finally no energy company at all wanted to take over the risk of running it.

So Greifswald was shut down. Not to spite you, but because both security of the general population and financial aspects didn't allow running it anymore. (It had already two near disasters which where kept hidden and only became known because of the fall of the DDR)
