remember: none of the metrics duolingo keeps track of have anything to do with language proficiency. it’s a game not a learning tool.
yes: duolingo > doing nothing
but: any alternative learning method > duolingo
they stay relevant through viral marketing, that is often objectively funny, not through efficacy. the idea is that if you want to learn a language, your first thought is to use duolingo. then if it fails, you blame yourself: it cannot be the case that the most famous language-learning product doesn‘t actually help you learn a language.

technically yes, but my comment wasn’t meant as a moral indictment against you :)
just a heads up: learning a new language is an amazing experience, just consider alternatives to duolingo first

Pearl Harbor
funnily enough, japan had the exact same reaction to germany invading the soviet union. japan was probably the only country at the time who correctly estimated their strength, having just lost an embarrassing defeat against them.
luckily, starting an unwinnable war, hoping that sheer will and terror can beat the odds, is no longer of our time.

I found starting with vocabulary the most effective. take A1 vocabulary lists, and make memorization a daily routine.
if the grammar of your target language is similar to a language you already speak, ignore it for now. if you need some grammar for comprehension, focus only on that. so don’t waste time (yet) on gender or case systems.
if you manage to stay dedicated, you can start reading and listening surprisingly quickly. ofc it should be either easy texts and audio, or stuff you’ve already familiar with.
other tips: don’t get frustrated by quitting, accept the break and start again; if you’re bored with one specific activity, switch it up. you need to practice listening, reading, writing, grammar, speaking, etc anyways; and if you don’t manage to motivate yourself, pay someone to do it for you (if you have the means ofc).
it’s probably not universal, but this worked for me.

Heard this for decades and nothing changes
As a woman you have to be a virgin until marriage, but in your 50s, when your marriage is sagging, you get to be a femme fatale. You get to break as many twenty-year-olds hearts over your metaphorical knees as you want, really make them feel that precious experience. Circle closed. Good deal for all involved.

It‘s funny because historically America has always been the good guy, and Trump is the only anomaly. This is clear by the fact that the US is currently not involved in any proxy or trade war with any of the evil dictators on the other side.
Very sharp analysis by the cartoonist, they really must have a strong grip on reality.

There is no evidence that Trump is substantially less confrontative with Russia and China than any other president in the last 30 years (my comment directly references this), so in that sense he is “balancing” geopolitics by keeping the world on the constant brink of WW3 “as any good president should”.
My problem with this “comic” is two fold. One, it implies that Trump is an anomaly in an otherwise continuous moral America. Two, it presents a world that is in a constant state of conflict between imperialists powers (What did a tankie just call Russia imperialist?!?) as a desirable state.
But yes, it’s me that is talking to straw men.

German nurse gets life in jail after killing 10 to reduce work
The article does not mention the evidence basis, so I will keep my comment general. In the Netherlands similar accusations were made against Lucia de Berk, the evidence was based on opinions of superiors and colleagues plus the statistical unlikelihood of so many patients dying under her supervision. But crucially there was never any direct evidence that she deliberately killed patients, and in the end it turned out that she didn’t. She was particularly unliked by her colleagues because she was a sex worker in the past and that is why she was given the worst shifts (and coincidentally the shifts where more patients die). In the end her life was ruined by her colleagues and the judiciary system not understanding statistics (5 percent of all nurses have a statistically-significant high death rate). Again this case could be a real psychopath but the fact that they don’t mention the evidence basis makes me think of Lucia de Berk.

The EU still wants to scan all your chats – and the rules could come into force by October 2025
Maybe it’s time to restart some some old Greek traditions and propose a law that anyone proposing chat control - from here on out - gets banished for life from entering European soil ever again.

[Video] Dutch police violently assault pregnant German wife of a Palestinian refugee and then attack the Palestinian after he defends his wife
I read some dutch news articles on this, and the propaganda is just insane. They all just quote the police spokesperson:
“The woman was pulled after which she fell to the ground”
“The police wanted to act quickly in a dynamic situation”
“The video only shows a part of the story”
“We have to look at the exact order of events”
But the good news: the police is gonna do an internal investigation.
The police is just a legal gang that protects the property rights of the elite.

If you think this is cowardice then you must not yet have developed object permanence.
This is the main role of the democratic party, keep the left down and keep the capitalist happy. They will cynically adopt any issue - that doesn’t threaten that prime directive - for a few months, be it black lives matter or trans rights, and then drop them again once it’s no longer convenient.
But if any real leftist candidate (with huge democratic support and winning based on broadly popular policies), ever comes close to power, all defense mechanisms kick in.
