Future Insight – The Jenkins

So, as it turns out there are a few big reasons.

  • it's a cosmic felony

  • causing improbable events creates a new timeline which increases entropy in all probable realities, which can have some drastic (and usually negative) effects.

  • most time travel agencies (which is what most people can afford) use technology that doesn't actually allow for free will, that's why it's mostly sold for vacations.

    • you can alter/push some decisions, but for most people it's not gonna be successful stocks.
    • older technology was advanced calculation in a realistic simulation. Most people just wanted an old memory or to get closure. Some people just try a different meal or movie choice, the experience is all that matters.
  • time mercenaries. We're actually not sure who these guys are, but we also don't wanna know either. Some say they're who cause spontaneous combustion and embarrassing deaths.

  • most forms of actual time travel leave the user stranded, with chronic or terminal illness (and sometimes amnesia), and in some cases fading/poofing out of existence when certain thresholds are crossed.

    • On top of that, new timelines of you typically aren't experienced by you. It's a different you. So that was nice of you.
  • time spiders. You don't want to know.

It's always been true.

People will point out that US health does get a decent chunk of money, though they'll leave out that it goes to others (insurance profit) so the care part doesn't actually get that value. Like how US spends more just in tax per-capita than many countries with universal care spend total, but we get significantly less for it.

So really it should mirror the war table but with a fat CEO or two smoking a cigar, with the emaciated doctor excluded from the table.

Love to see it. Not shocked, though.

For an opposite example, the creator of a niche programming language that is the only one I'm interested in (it's really great, and I haven't seen anything that comes close to fitting the same place) said something at-very-least stupid which was the final straw that caused a core developer (nearly co-creator? created the package manager+installer, wrote a book) to quit. And it already had a low bus-factor.

PSA: Remember that the internet isn't real life

Somebody on the internet: "U think bees can smell the flowers? Just a dude lovin' his job, that's purpose. Not like us, oh boy if I don't sell the pointless squares right an old man is gonna project his angry breath at me and if this happens enough I become homeless again."

Family in real life: "What they're doing at CERN scares me. They're gonna destroy the world! Also climate change is made up for some reason and I see no problem with oil companies."

Ugch, fine, you can use me to feed a patch of mushrooms that's beginning to grow in the now-warming areas of the planet, ultimately to become a giant organism/network that covers Antarctica in white mycelium/mushrooms/spores to replace the albedo effect of snow/ice to save the future of all life on Earth.

But I'll need a ride there.

Wouldn't have been difficult to sleuth using my profile here, but Nim-lang. Specifically because it's basically an all-in-one, being easy and fast+capable+flexible. Maybe not enough to go by (and I didn't finish/release it), but some code that I actually wrote (+what it's loading)

For further context on the statement by the creator, it was complaining about the "grammar" of singular they. Aside from that being an obvious culture-war BS dogwhistle, the person who quit knew them closely so I don't think it was an overreaction or misunderstanding.

KB, MB, GB, and TB are all part of the metric system. What empirical measurements should we Free™️ Americans use for computer memory?

KiB, MiB, GiB etc are more clear. It makes a big difference especially 1TB vs 1TiB.

The American way would probably be still using the units you listed but still meaning 1024, just to be confusing.

Either that or maybe something that uses physical measurement of a hard-drive (or CD?) using length. Like that new game is 24.0854 inches of data (maybe it could be 1.467 miles of CD?).

Preach.

"You want to... leave the planet? With aliens you just met?"

Listen, the bar is pretty low. I'll take my chances and will probably be fine with pretty much anything that isn't prolonged neglect/indifference or intentional torture. If you make contact after interstellar travel I'm just gonna assume you're cool and got things covered. And if nothing else you could probably put my brain in a roomba so I can weld in space or something.

TL;DR it don't matter, none of this matters.

The end of movie-web

Reply in thread

It was a streaming site that pulled from a large amount of other sources automatically.

Funnily enough it didn't have any discovery features whatsoever (no front page, popular, latest etc), it was just a search bar that took you right into the video so you needed an idea what it is you wanted to see. And I don't think it was nearly as popular as other sites (like you probably weren't finding it from search results, as I don't think it even had the info that'd be grabbed, and probably didn't even have SEO or anything like that)

Mammals have muscle?

I can see not being attracted to a muscular aesthetic (though I do I think the image here is a bit silly). I say that as a loser who'd let a jacked woman beat me to death with a waffle maker.
