I am itching so much for the perfect episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight commemorating the most absurd but effective protest in histor, sounding off the whole mess of a situation and poking some more at spez. It'll be a feast.

For some reason, this whole chaos is more true to the Reddit I know than everything has been for the last years.

That is incredible. It's hilarious, it's satirical, it's a sharp criticism and it absolutely hammers the stupidity of every Reddit statement home.

There's more to this than the direct changes to their platform:

• not communicating with mods and users
• being deadset about a really bad feature
• doubling down on killing third party development
• being a real dick about controversies
• not valuing users for their content
• not valuing volunteer moderators
• going after a beloved developer specifically for no other reason than him going public with the situation

There's some things you can't rebuild, and a lot of redditors accept that Reddit is like an abusive spouse and it's time to see other people.

There are a lot of reasons for this general trend, but let me add my two cents to make a case for the sudden influx of user-opposed changes:

I don't have a source for this, but I remember that Linus spoke about this on the LTT WAN-Show. Basically, abunch of big silicon valley investors are pulling out of all of the big platforms, therefore leaving them with a huge hole in their profitability. This means, that right now a lot of them are scrambling to scrape together more money over time, so all of those platforms are sustainable.

Obviously this has to observed in conjunction with all of those are trends that are already mentioned by other comments, but this gives more basis as to why now, and why to this extent.

If someone else knows what I'm talking about please add quotes and sources because I don't like the good old 'dude trust me' guarantee one bit.

Saying to work with third party apps, but going full ballistic on Christian. Saying not to threaten mods and starting to threaten mods. Calling the API revenue small but appearently big enough to hike prices. Saying that Reddit is community driven but not listening to the community.

It's kind of impressive how tone deaf every action is that the Reddit CEO and his team has taken in the last week.

Just a heads up, it looks like there's an incredible uptick in development contribution to Lemmy and jerboa for Lemmy, so the next updates might not be far afield and specifically for jerboa the next version seems to fix a wide range of different bugs that people have been vocal about.

Development issues

They enabled it, it was broken and the implementation sucked, so they removed it again. But hey if you are pissed about it, feel free to help - you can fork the GitHub project and then fix it yourself :)

Also remember everyone working on it is volunteering. Cut them some slack, all of them have normal jobs as well.

Well, you're not gonna like this but every pentesting / vulnerability scan starts with a port scan. It's really there to probe a PC for anything interesting. Although it's not strictly illegal because you're just kindly asking a PC to handover any meta information on what is currently running on the PC exposed to the internet, the trajectory is clear and in the contrast the goal is opaque which makes it shady af.

don't worry, they're coming. a bunch of bigger third party app Devs have said they will make an app for Lemmy, and that will include iOS apps as well I'm sure. it's just a matter of time.
