I've seen a lot of talk about how this move changes the admins the community will be under, but very little about how this will change the randos that pass through. The mods keep saying this won't change anything, that the moderation will stay the same, etc, but the reason this community is the way it is is that there are a lot of locals that find it. When the new community shows up on l.w's local page, it will bring in a far different crowd. Their posts, comments, and up/down votes will change the community, and there's no amount of moderation that will fix that.

Mods, this is why people are mad you made this change without asking anyone. Many of us do not want an influx of .world users into this space because we know what kind of politics and biases they'll bring with them and that, even if you moderate the bigots, the normies will still likely overpower the queer voices this community is known for.

The problem with calling these tools AI is not really an argument from definitions. The argument at its core is saying that the general public brings a lot of assumptions to something that's being called "AI", which aren't true but benefit investors.

You mention the kitty litter thing, but you know that was fully a lie, right? It was there in case of an active shooter situation, and the people upset about it weren't gesturing to people like drag, but to furries, most of whom (in reality) are just enjoying playing pretend. IMO it's a little weird to fill a "best new anime" list almost half with returning anime. Like, they're not wrong picks, but people are either already planning to watch them or they're not caught up.

This was absolutely stunning to look at and it was very easy to get invested in the characters and their relationship. The way it's shot and animated gave everything a very vibrant and wacky energy that set the tone very well.

.... However. Momo's scene with the aliens was extremely uncomfortable to watch. Ken's side of the plot where his "weenie" is stolen (or just possessed?) by the granny ghost is only better in that they didn't show that to us. I really want to like this, but it just feels too based in sexual assault of minors ?? Can someone familiar with the source material let me know if this is a show about weird sex stuff (no judgement, just not for me) or if that was a bit of a one-off that will get toned down or left behind going forward?

Uh, sure, I guess I'll agree it's less conservative than feudalism, but I'm not sure what that has to do with whether HP is conservative? It's not as if the story is about overthrowing a monarchy to establish modern capitalism (a different common story structure with its own problems); it's about removing all the bad people in positions of authority so that the good people can make society work like it should while changing nothing systemically.

LLMs should be good for translation, but the thing is that they aren't, for two main reasons:

First, the avoidable problem: CR is running them on the audio, not the script. The AI is mishearing stuff all the time, leading to inconsistent character naming and nonsensical sentences. There are a few CR anime this season that are extremely hard to follow at times because the AI subtitles can't even begin to understand what's happening.

Second, a more permanent problem: translation of fiction is much more of an art than a science. Translators don't just translate words, they translate connotation and tone, as well. A translator interprets the meaning of the lines - what information is being conveyed, spoken or unspoken - and tries to put that same meaning into a different sentence. This is a task that LLMs are going to struggle with a lot. For example, how is the AI going to convey that there's been a pun, or a reference to a well-known turn of phrase, or an innuendo using words with multiple meanings?

I was fully ready for them to spend all season getting into different kinds of trouble while practicing for their big race, since that's the Jump formula, but I guess we don't have time for that. I think it bodes well for how much escalation we'll get by the end, lol.

Also, I'm wondering if Granny's hairdo has a practical purpose. When I saw it I couldn't help but remember the thing about focusing your spiritual power out of the top of your head and I wonder if her hair helps her do that or if there's even something hidden in there.

Edgy, cheap-looking, and bland. As I understand it, main character is meant to be a villain protagonist, which can be fine, but he's just not very interesting. Most of it is a mix of paint-by-numbers isekai tropes and edge for the sake of edge. I have no reason to stick around for any more of this, even less so after hearing some spoilers about the sort of shit MC does later.

"Just following orders" absolutely does excuse bad writing as long as it's not harmful. I wouldn't get mad at a writer of a thing a studio ruined just like I wouldn't get mad at a grocery store worker for rearranging the shelves for the fifth week in a row. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean doing a stupid and pointless job makes them a bad person. If the writing is racist or whatever, sure, they're complicit, but writers have to eat and it's not morally wrong to write a boring script if that's what your boss is asking you for.

They are, though. Liberal is often used in American politics to imply progressive/leftist, but that's not what it means. Liberalism is pro- status quo and, like the heroes of HP, supports the idea that our current system would work great if not for the Bad People messing it up.
