Unofficial Reddit API

API access was only half the problem. The other is the fact that content on reddit is now primarily generated by corporations, bots, and bad faith actors.

Going there for specific threads (e.g. help posts in programming subs) seems okay-ish, but scrolling the front page is a doomed endeavor at this point... not much different from Facebook or Instagram.

Password managers are less secure than promised

tl;dr:

  1. If the password manager server is hacked and compromised, then syncing your passwords with the compromised server will lead to compromised passwords (duh)
  2. None of the providers tested have (or have had in the past) compromised servers.

and an observation or two:

  • Vaultwarden is free, self-hostable, and doesn't rely on trust in a third party.
  • Keepass (and its client variants, like KeepassXC which is pretty great) is even more secure because there is no server, just an encrypted file you can store anywhere.

There's a subtext that you guys are missing. The devil wins whether he says Johnny won or lost.

  • If the devil wins, he gets Johnny's soul per the terms of the bet.
  • If Johnny wins, the devil gets Johnny's soul because he's committing multiple deadly sins purely by boasting and challenging the devil for a golden fiddle: pride, greed, vanity.

If he deems Johnny the winner, Johnny is less likely to challenge the decision, and he's also more likely to continue committing the sins of pride and vanity (by boasting of his victory over the Devil Himself).

Johnny's only chance to avoid his fate (per most strains of the Christian faith) is to acknowledge and repent/confess/absolve his sins by seeking divine mercy. The devil knows this is unlikely.

Johnny lost as soon as he uttered his first line.

I am attempting to get into Selfhosting after a shockingly frightening experience, but I am very lost.

Reply in thread

I am a sysadmin with over 30 years of experience managing servers and networks for businesses of all sizes as well as for myself, friends, and family.

The FUTO guide is extremely detailed, accurate, and accessible. It does not always follow best practices, and it's not a comprehensive guide to all of the possibilities for self-hosting. It's not trying to be. It is a guide for someone with no technical expertise (but with basic technical ability) to degoogle/deapple themselves at a reasonable level of cost and effort.

You do not have to do everything in the list, you can pick and choose the parts you're interested in. That said, I would recommend reading through the whole article as you have time, because it does a very good job of explaining the concepts involved in building a self-hosted setup, and understanding how everything works is the biggest step toward being able to effectively troubleshoot problems when they inevitably crop up.

If you have specific questions about things that aren't answered in the guide or via a quick web search, post them here.

Chinese carmaker, BYD, introduces new battery technology with 621-mile range, 620K-mile lifespan, 5-minute charge, and lower prices

Reply in thread

This is one of those rare situations where reading the fucking manual article helps:

A standard home charger trickles power overnight at roughly 7 kilowatts, like a garden hose. A Tesla Supercharger—long considered the gold standard of public fast-charging—maxes out around 250 kilowatts. BYD is unleashing six times that amount of energy, effectively hooking the car up to a high-pressure municipal water main.

During a live demonstration onstage, BYD plugged in its new Han L sedan, making the battery jump from 10% to 80% capacity in exactly six minutes and 30 seconds.

without protection

I mean, you should still probably use protection unless you're with a mutually monogamous trusted partner... because even though HIV is easier to live with now, it's still HIV. Not to mention the other potential STDs.

This is true for straight couples too, of course. Be safe out there, folks.
