Rainbow tape!

This whole situation should have just been settled with making the warmup jerseys optional for the players. That way none of the bigots would feel uncomfortable supporting non-bigotry and the league wouldn't provide the bigots cover for the bigots to not draw attention to their bigotry.

7,000 Microplastics Studies Show We Have One Really Big Problem

Reply in thread

Rather than take a defeatist veiw from this line if thinking, it will do well for your mental health to first spend more time, energy and thoughts on things you can control. Not just things related to environmentalism, but broadly reduce energy, engagement and focus from the things you don't have significant control over and direct them to those things you do have control. It's good to get a broad picture and observe the world around you outside of your control in small doses, but it's easy to over indulge in an unfocused survey of problems in the world, especially on social media. (I include Lemmy communities in the social media category).

Furthermore, when you do engage with these problems, do so with more narrow focus and in more depth with an eye towards understanding the level of impact the problem has and what organizations or policy positions you can support to amplify your limited influence over the issues that causee the problem. In this way you can mitigate the feelings of helplessness and sense of there being many existential and imminent problems you need to contend with but cannot remedy. You can turn seemingly untouchable solutions into real possibilities without overwhelming your emotional capacity by working with others.

Jellyfin, we are moving away from Reddit and we are pleased to announce our new forum!

I wish they would have chosen to use software to maintain threading in comments and I'm not sure that Discourse really gamifies it's posts. After a quick look at the interface of myBB, I can say that I personally prefer Discourse. But I think non-accelrated-time-decaing forums are way better than Reddit for things like a project hub. I think what I liked about having many of my interests in on Reddit was the context switch for a topic often didn't require a context switch in interface to benefit from the network effect of many people participating in the topic.

But at the end of the day, knowing where to get quality assistance and casual discussion about a topic or project is all I'm after. Reddit has been a place to find what I was after, oftentimes as a signpost to find where people are gathering. And now the threadiverse is providing that function much better and sooner than I expected despite its many shortcomings.

When transmission lines fell, 16 electric vehicles fed power into the grid. It showed electric vehicles can provide the backup Australia needs

This project utilised 50 ACT government-owned Nissan LEAF electric vehicles and chargers across Canberra.

the results also highlight the need to be smarter about how all electric vehicles charge, especially during such emergencies.

In February, once the vehicles had discharged power for ten minutes, nine vehicles started charging. This is because their default behaviour is to charge when their batteries are below a certain level. It’s the last thing the power system needs while trying to stabilise.

The six vehicles that switched to an idle state after ten minutes must have still had enough energy in their batteries. That one vehicle kept discharging for ten more minutes was due to a software bug. What’s more, when we looked at data from other ACT government vehicles parked in these properties, we found 23 were charging throughout the event. Again this directly obstructs power system recovery.

There would have been absolutely no inconvenience or cost for the vehicles to delay charging for an hour or two.

electric hot water heaters could also make a big contribution without causing inconvenience.

This is great for short term outages, but they aren't considering multi-day outages. I lost power in NJ for 11 and 13 days on separate occasions in one year. I wouldn't want my vehicle to be drained of energy as an event like those started. But shutting off hot water heaters is a pure win.

The world's most powerful tidal turbine - but can our grid handle it?

Tidal turbines are designed to be noisy enough to deter marine life but not so noisy that there are detrimental health and ecological effects. Not sure how successful this strategy is, but the scale of deployments is still small and more study and monitoring should be done before the scale makes big impacts from even small effects.

Here's a blog post from an engineering firm that works on these issues:
