Please, I beg you — South Africa has enough problems as it is. Can he not go to Mars instead? He has always been very enthusiastic about the planet and he would be safe from the “woke virus” he so dreads — a win for everyone?

Bluesky Says It Will Comply With EU Rules After Being Called Out

That 6% is the gross of sales, not revenues as well.

I think you mean "that's 6% of revenue, not profit". Revenue is gross income before expenses and other tax deductions. Sales is revenue generated by selling products and services, as opposed to interest and investment proceeds. Profit is revenue minus expenses and tax deductions and is where corporations often cheat.

Donald Trump rejects bipartisan plan to avoid a government shutdown, sets up debt ceiling battle

As far as I can tell, Biden didn't control Congress. Senator Manchin, for example, effectively watered down the Build Back Better Act that Biden advocated for — and, to my knowledge, Biden never threatened him or any other Democratic members of Congress who resisted his legislative plans with “political consequences”, as Trump is doing to Republican House representatives in this instance.

In establishing himself as the Republican presidential candidate for the 2024 election, Trump seems to me to have set up a sort of cult of personality within the party such that Republicans either fall in line or out of favor.

China's Xi Jinping asked 'What’s so bad about deflation?' amid economic slowdown, report says

Reply in thread

"The economy" in this instance being a playground for the rich.

People won't stop paying for food or rent just because their money might be worth a little more tomorrow.

Indeed, people won't stop paying for everyday necessities, but the economy consists of more than just individual people: there's the state and there are businesses too. You conflate the latter with “the rich”, which is generally true for corporations, but corporations are not the only form of business; there are cooperatives, partnerships, and others which can distribute profits more fairly. In any case, deflation affects all businesses, including fair ones, and the state itself. As another commentator suggested, money is meant to change hands and should never become an asset worth holding.

Ukraine: Zelensky condemns "inhumane" Russia Christmas Day attack

Reply in thread

To my knowledge, Zelenskyy only expressed support for Israel after October the 7th, 2023, over a year and a half after Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine — a year and a half during which Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Palestinian Authority could have condemned Russia's war against Ukraine. They didn't, presumably, for the same reason Zelenskyy has expressed support for Israel: to avoid antagonizing their allies, morals be damned. Given their dire situation –both Ukraine and the Palestinians rely heavily on their respective allies for military and diplomatic support–, I think we ought to give them a pass. If you disagree, at least apply the same logic to both and condemn them equally.

respected foreign news source like Le Monde or Die Welt

Die Welt is not or should not be respected. It belongs to Axel Springer SE, a European media corporation comparable in both reach and tone to Fox News Media in the United States.

Die Welt's latest controversy –one among many– saw them publish an opinion piece by Elon Musk endorsing the AfD, which further legitimized the party and weakened the already debilitating cordon sanitaire around it.

In the German-speaking world, Die Welt is mocked as the “wannabe's Bild”. Bild is a tabloid published by the same company that constantly engages in both misinformation and disinformation. Although Die Welt isn't as blatant as its tabloid sibling, it still pushes a disingenuous narrative and should be avoided.

Trump Backtracks On Campaign Pledge To Bring Down Grocery Prices

Reply in thread

Presidents and administrations might not be able to dictate specific prices, but they can and do enact laws and regulations that influence or even define the economy. Trump's proposed tariffs are expected –not just by economists, but by markets, as seen after the election– to raise prices and, if they are enacted and result in the predicted outcome, fingers should be pointed at his Orangeness.

Tesla sales are tanking in Europe

Reply in thread

I would characterize Tesla stock not as a pump & dump scheme anymore, but as a bet on Musk's position to extract concessions from his political connections. He has got his way already with Trump planning to end EV subsidies that mostly benefited Tesla's competitors (although Trump may have intended to do so anyway) and he might yet push against regulation that would threaten Tesla's market position in the US, like federal charging standards. He may also get Trump to impose harsher tariffs on Chinese electrical vehicles than he otherwise would, although such tariffs enjoy bipartisan support.

PGP is outdated, proprietary software that most people should not use.

OpenPGP, the standard people often mean when referring to PGP, does not lend itself to mass adoption because it requires understanding of asymmetric cryptography, secure and reliable backups of private keys –lest you lose your cryptographic identity or, worse yet, it falls into the wrong hands– and capable hardware tokens like YubiKeys for secure usage –private keys should not be laying around in your system–, among other reasons. Proper usage is a must; mistakes are often not apparent and therefore breed a false sense of security. On top of that, OpenPGP has been forked, with LibrePGP threatening interoperability.

GnuPG, the software people often mean when referring to PGP, is very, very difficult to use right. I say that as an advanced user; the Keyoxide proof on my Lemmy profile and all the Keyoxide claims I've put in my key should at least prove my dedication to the OpenPGP ecosystem.

Although new implementations of OpenPGP like Sequoia PGP may make OpenPGP easier to use, OpenPGP remains a bad option for mass adoption. Domain-specific solutions like HTTPS, Signal and electronic identity cards are better candidates.

Elon Musk says too many game studios are owned by giant corporations so his giant corporation is going to start a studio to 'make games great again'

He stands to gain more through his political influence than he has lost with Twitter, and the latter arguably helped him get the former. By itself, his acquisition of Twitter is and will remain a loss; in the grand scheme of things, though, it was a sort of investment that is likely to pay off handsomely. If he's learnt anything, it's that the United States have devolved into a plutocracy that capital can steer off the common interest of their citizens and the common good.
