Big tobacco hooked us on ultra-processed foods. It might teach us how to cut back

Back in the 1980s, tobacco giants began aggressively expanding into manufactured foods, buying up some of the biggest food firms. For example, Philip Morris used to own Kraft General Foods and RJ Reynolds owned Nabisco. This was the era when ultra-processed food production really ramped up in the U.S., Schmidt says.

She says tobacco firms had spent decades amassing research on how to make cigarettes more pleasurable and addictive with chemical additives. And she says internal company records show they deliberately applied this knowledge to food manufacturing.

you need this reminder

The Ricoh GR series has always been the sharpest, smallest, most expensive (and my favorite) point-and-shoot camera line, but with the GR IV Monochrome, the company put a dedicated monochrome sensor into its tiny body. And that changes everything~ you start to see contrast and light far more, and you can't rely on "pretty colors".

It's limiting!

Which is the opposite of what most tech aims to do these days. And I love it! But I won't be spending $2,200 on it... 'cause like who the hell has that much $$$ to drop on something that is just for fun? (if you do, hell yeah no shade, please enjoy the hell outta this camera a little extra 4me ❤️)Monochrome

The camera pics do look great, but definitely too pricey for me. I did love Becca's discussion on using limitations to spur creativity.

New legislation would aim to make it easier to build new homes in MI

Among other things, the bills would allow duplexes in single-family residential areas, lower the minimum size for housing units, and reduce lot size requirements for single-family homes.

While the bills have bipartisan support, that backing isn’t guaranteed from local government groups.

Court: Michigan civil rights probe into Grand Rapids police has no deadline

The Michigan Court of Appeals says a state civil rights investigation into police misconduct in Grand Rapids can continue for as long is at needs to because it is an administrative inquiry, not a criminal matter.

Grand Rapids filed the lawsuit in 2023 against the Michigan Department of Civil Rights – arguing the state exceeded a three-year statute of limitations to wrap up its investigation.

Latest tests show lead levels in Flint's drinking water remain within compliance

The number is well within state (12 ppb) and federal (15 ppb) action levels for lead in drinking water. The number is up from 3 ppb in the first half of 2025. Regulators attribute the increase to the testing of businesses with low water usage and older plumbing that can sometimes lead to higher lead results during a sampling period.

Gilchrist leaves governor's race, seeks secretary of state nomination

“This office has more data and information about Michiganders than any other department. At a time when big tech companies are trying to mine that data, my technology background makes me the best person to protect that data and information from that kind of surveillance and data-mining in a way that nobody else can,” Gilchrist said.

The decision leaves the race for Michigan’s Democratic nomination for governor largely between current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.
