More than 45 scholars to present papers at academic conference on K-Pop band BTS

So here's a thing.

Organised by the International Society for BTS Studies (ISBS) and Universiti Malaya (UM), the upcoming fourth edition conference in 2023 to be hosted by Malaysia is scheduled to be held for the first time in Southeast Asia from 16-17 Aug.

In an interview with Bernama recently, UM's Department of East Asian Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Associate Professor Dr Jimmyn Parc said as this year marks the 40th anniversary of South Korea's inclusion in the Look East Policy (LEP), the conference is dubbed as a vital component of the "New LEP".

Six months have since passed and the patient is now living a healthy life. The transplant has thus been hailed as a resounding success.

To learn more about the operation, FMT Lifestyle spoke to three representatives from the medical team behind it. These were Dr Lim Soo Kun, a nephrologist and UMMC’s renal division head; Dr Shanggar Kuppusamy, a urologist; and Dr Raja Iskandar Shah Raja Azwa, an infectious disease expert.

The Dissolution of a Monetary Union: The Case of Malaysia and Singapore 1963–1974

Yes, as a boring person this is what's catching my interest on merdeka day. Open access too.

Abstract

The abrupt separation of Singapore and Malaysia in 1965 set these two states on separate political trajectories, but the economic ties proved more difficult to untangle. This article explores the nine years of transition required to complete the separation of the monetary systems of the two territories based on new archival evidence. It argues that, while socio-political hostility raged between the two partners, common economic interests prolonged an intimate monetary relationship that extended the interdependence of the two states for many years beyond their formal separation.

Selangor 'Fake Joint Venture' Raises Questions For Azmin Ali

From article:

Following a police report issued by a Selangor based contractor named Haizal bin Hanif last week, Sarawak Report has been passed an extensive dossier containing what appears to be significant new evidence relating to a scandal that broke in July 2019 over alleged multi-million ringgit kickbacks paid in return for a major ‘direct nego’ development project, supposedly in a joint venture with the state government.

The courts have concluded the so-called Salak Tinggi housing project, involving 100 acres and projected to be worth RM600 million, was a fraudulent scheme that had not in fact been authorised by the state government as believed by the developer.

However, the evidence, if true, indicates that many senior political figures, including the former MB Azmin Ali, were seeking to push through the project from as early as 2016 in return for purported political donations.

Call for Short Historical Fiction featuring Lim Chin Siong as a minor but vital character – New Naratif

cross-posted from: https://kbin.social/m/magASEAN/t/372170

From the link:
In Singapore and beyond, there has been a quickening of interest in the anticolonial and socialist struggle of the 50s and 60s after the publications of archival research by historian PJ Thum and of the Eisner-winning graphic novel The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew, among other works. The undisputed leader of this historical struggle was the student activist, trade unionist, and politician Lim Chin Siong (LCS), who organised the largest social movement in Singapore to fight for democracy, freedom, and justice. Although this movement ultimately failed, it opens a window into an alternative future for Singapore, Malaysia, and the rest of Asia—a window that creative writers with their imaginative powers can help us look at and through.

Deadline for submissions is 1 December 2023. There are also introductory material on Lim Chin Siong himself and the historical context he was in.

Unfortunately their twitter thread about Lim is not mirrored anywhere else, but if you like, here's the thread

Help me PM, pleads man arrested after sounding alarm on post-GE15 threats

from the article

A man arrested last November, shortly after he sounded the alarm that inflammatory content was being posted on TikTok, is pleading with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for help.

Zulfadzli Halim is seeking the country’s top leader’s assistance in getting an update on his case, saying that the authorities have reportedly stonewalled him.

His story began on Nov 21 last year, two days after the 15th general election.

Zulfadzli (above) had tweeted about his discovery and concerns that hate speech and racially motivated provocative content - including threats of a repeat of the May 13, 1969 riots - were being posted on the social media platform.

Screenshots and screen recordings taken by him and other netizens led to the discovery that at least three of the provocative content on TikTok had been paid for.

However, in a twist of events, it was Zulfadzli that police acted against, probing him under the Sedition Act - allegedly for insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He has denied doing such an act and contests that police have not been able to pinpoint which of his tweets did so either.

He was released three days later.

Malay loanwords in Teochew language

Got linked to this mainly because berdiskusi over how Singaporeans spell out Malay words and it's essentially because they're localized into teochew and then modern generation use it in romanized spelling instead of restoring the Malay spelling the way Malaysians would tend to do it. Still looking for an explanation for tombalek tho.

Home Ministry raids local author's bookstore, seizes books

The Home Ministry raided and conducted a seizure at the Toko Buku Rakyat bookstore owned by local author Benz Ali at Wisma Central, Kuala Lumpur, earlier today.

When contacted, Benz confirmed the incident and expressed his disappointment with the confiscation.

“You can’t do this. What’s more, under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This is just like the previous BN government.

“It’s your government, yet you can’t even control the Home Ministry. I sell books that are not listed in the banned book list.
