Categories: what comedy anime do you recommend?

@Shortcake I'm obsessed with Mob Psycho 100, but for other comedies...

Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War is hilarious and so is Bocchi the Rock. They're both more in the slice of life category, but the relationships between characters are front and center in a way that is less slapstick and more personal? I guess. KSLW especially is just...hilarious, even if you're not in it for the love story.

I'm directing traffic to "my" communities here

@overzeetop

I actually think that for those who wish to migrate, or even just diversify, a slow migration through awareness building is ideal. A lot of forums that people rely on won't easily be built up overnight. Not to mention the strain of so many people moving over to new platforms at once.

I remember reading about the various challenges that came about when the Twitter meltdown began. Everything from emergency announcements to disability advocacy and support wound up being impacted.

We still don't know what the future of Reddit is. Whether things up wind up resolving for better or worse with the platform (and tbh I hope it's better for the many people who still love it and have found an online home there), establishing an awareness of alternatives is great. It means people will know they have somewhere to go if the ship goes down.

I feel like with Twitter it was a lot harder for people to find that and many are still looking.

["Poll"] Community Input on the Magazine

My most immediate thoughts are as follows...

  • The microblog may be best treated as a separate space until/unless it's possible to tailor it more. I think it's fair to say that while we can moderate the threads, the microblog space is all-encompassing/topical and is not subject to our rules, which also means we can't speak to what experience someone will have if they choose to use it. I think we can make this clear in the rules post, along with a note that we have not vetted and do not in any way endorse any of the sites people may be promoting on that microblog. (This is just to say that they may be totally legitimate and safe, but we aren't going to check every link in the fediverse for you!)

  • Recently someone did a series of unofficial KBin logo poll options and honestly, I think it's a fun idea. I enjoy visuals and I would love to see what people come up with. Could be a fun thing to vote on if the community wants to submit ideas? I'm more inclined to working with non-digital materials so I'm probably the last person who should be speaking to this, however. XD

Shunned, boycotted, exiled: has France treated Françoise Gilot worse than Picasso did?

Reply in thread

I'm disappointed, but not surprised. Still, I cannot imagine spending a lifetime dedicated to a craft, honing it, immersing myself in the work of it, only to have it celebrated as either a gendered exception or as an accomplishment somehow credited to abusive ex.

Many artists are part of communities. Some artists receive recognition, some do not, but we're often so eager to insist that those we recognized first somehow influenced everyone else, and seldom was it the other way around, or an exchange.

It's such a common narrative, as if we appoint these figures to be the main characters of artistic history and the entire narrative of that movement must revolve around them somehow.

What Makes You Drop A Fic?

Oh gosh, there's not one specific thing. Really, if I decide I'm just not enjoying a story, or not enjoying it anymore...I stop reading it. That doesn't mean there is anything objectively wrong with the story. It's possible that my fixation has shifted, or that something arose that I just didn't care for in terms of how they presented a character or situation and it struck in just such a way.

This actually happens more often with novels than it does with fanfiction, as fanfiction authors tend to be fairly forthcoming and they use a lot of tags.

As an example, I remember getting a few chapters into a novel once that portrayed (not in a way that at all endorsed) a very abusive relationship and did so in such a heart-breakingly realistic way that I couldn't get past it.

The story itself was an absurd, fantastical, bizarre work of fiction that just so happened to portray certain very real dynamics in a way that felt jarring. If anything, that is to the author's credit, but I noped out not terribly far into it.

Fanfic Summaries

I like and like to use excerpts from the story itself. It gives me a sense of the writing style, and usually alludes to some point of action, creating a nice hook.

I have found that some summaries are so sparse and tell me so little about the story, that I scroll past them numerous times before eventually clicking on them when I have nothing else on the docket, only to find I actually DO like the story. I suppose I prefer that to a ton of spoilers, but it also likely means there are plenty of stories out there that I would love, but haven't clicked on yet.

Resisting the long-fic temptation

Hahaha... I tend to feel that good romances follow good friendships, so I often write stories that could be either pre-relationship or platonic soulmate (reader's choice). I think it just depends on whether the romance (or lack thereof) is significant to the plot itself.

Like I said, I enjoy romance. It's fun!

But I think romance is also sometimes substituted for "someone important to the protagonist." It becomes a sort of shorthand for that and if taken for granted the dynamic can be left pretty underdeveloped, which can be a bummer.

Yeah, the ability to remove/block things like hate-speech is always a plus. I think as these various communities on the fediverse develop further, we'll likely get more solutions to these types of things.

In the immediate sense, obviously, report any instances of harassment. If the report feature doesn't seem to be working, direct message is fine!

More broadly, if you are on kbin and need to block an instance or a domain because it's making your feed unbearable: https://kbin.social/d/[domain.com] or [instance.instancename] will bring you to that instance's front page where you can select the block button next to subscribe.

There are guides that touch on this posted on the site, and they may provide better examples and more explanation. Still, it's great to be able to just remove entire instances from my feed that I don't personally want to see or which I find blatantly offensive.
