Unvetted AI agents are accessing U.S. bank accounts

Reply in thread

I think it might be true. Not in the sense that agents are so clever that they are hacking into online banking websites but in the sense that some people are so dumb they:

  1. willingly give agents credentials to access their bank accounts ("it's going to help me budget/figure out if I'm being overcharged by Netflix" or whatever else the AI-hype convinced them it's a good idea to let an agent do for you)
  2. or let agents run with full access to everything on their machines, including their "my_banking_codes.txt" file with their unencrypted passwords and the email/messaging apps where they receive the 2FA message to confirm their access

Americans in a nutshell

Reply in thread

I'm not saying Capitalism=good and I'm even open to accept Communism as the ethically superior alternative. It's just that, while I see Communism as a good balance to unchecked neoliberalism in a democracy, when either side completely takes over, countries seem to drift toward two opposite (but also so similar) types of dictatorship.

I do see how "pure free market" is becoming a threat, as you write, and I would like to see a bit more socialism added to the democratic mix again.

Americans in a nutshell

Reply in thread

The thing is: has Communism ever produced a good example in any country or historical period? Most religions are also based on some very good principles, but I can't think of a country where a theocracy produced a good place for people to live. So, I don't know.... there might be a fundamental disconnect between how good the principles are and how badly they adapt to human nature? Not a critique, please believe me. I really want to be educated on this.

‘Devastating blow’: Atlassian lays off 1,600 workers ahead of AI push

AI-washing layoffs. They will replace jack shit with AI but that's a better story than "we have to reduce costs because we don't have cheap ways to refinance our $1B debt".

Credit isn't cheap and Iran is not going to make it cheaper, investments in software have tanked, so the only story that can still be told with an almost straight face is that they still have big growth opportunities thanks to the magic of AI.

Government oversight agency rules Elon Musk’s mass firings are illegal

It's kind of funny (the sad kind of funny) that people with years of legal studies and experience have to meet and formally rule that something blatantly illegal to the point of stupidity is... well... illegal.

"If I have a made-up position that my own government admits is not an official one, can I go ahead and randomly fire thousands of people?"

"A ha! Good question, let's see what my copy of The Legal System for Dummies says!"

Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp

Reply in thread

They are basically at war with the US and there is this piece of US Tech that nearly everyone is carrying around and that can access their communications, precise location, microphone and camera.

It's also owned by a company, Meta, that has a history of being used as a tool to manipulate public opinion. I have no particular sympathy for Iran's leadership but I can understand why they would advice that (and I don't think WhatsApp is the only way for people to communicate with the outside world).
