Your picture is actually of active, well-used railroad tracks. Old unused tracks are rusty and weed-grown. If the rails are shiny it means that trains pass regularly and knock the rust off. If there's no weeds it's because the railroad actively sends out crews to maintain the tracks.

Oh yeah I had to work with a guy who just couldn't stop running off his mouth about Trump and how evil Republicans were. Everyone else was pretty nice to work with but that guy was just cringy all the time.

Great point. To see if its worth joining a community I check how many posts it has, and then look at the posts to see if anyone actually reads them (votes). Too little activity its not worth wasting my time. i already have too many communities subscribed as it is.

I guess I'll be giving away candy canes at Halloween. Maybe also some of those old fashioned ribbon candies that taste like mothballs... That's kind of in the spirit of Halloween isn't it?

But those high rent areas... Okay I don't know first hand, but in my reading I've been led to believe that it's because companies like Black Rock come in and buy all the available properties, and whenever a property becomes available they buy it. They can then charge whatever they want and nobody has a choice because they bought all the available inventory, and they have deep enough pockets to outbid any competition. They don't care if a unit goes vacant because they're making it up on another unit. You can rent two units for $100, for rent one for $100 and leave the other one vacant; the revenue is the same but you're actually better off leaving one vacant because you don't have to pay for maintenance on it, and it's one less property you have to actively manage. They could actually save money by leaving units vacant.
