Voyager 2.47.0: Try out the new rich text editor!

Hi all! Usually I don't make a dedicated post, but v2.47.0 of Voyager has a lot of goodies, so I thought I'd let everyone know here. I'm especially looking for users to test Voyager's new rich text editor! Please provide your feedback in the comments ^^

Update: There have been reported Android issues that should be fixed in v2.47.1, iOS should be fine!

Rich text editor

Off by default (Turn it on in General Settings -> Other). Markdown content will receive formatting live as you type! The only limitation (due to browser APIs) is undo on ios doesn't work.

Lemmy v1 support

It's experimental but should be fully supported! Let me know of any issues!

Post tags

On lemmy v1 and Piefed Voyager now supports post tags! Currently you can't filter, but that will be coming.

New comments highlightifier

This feature works best on lemmy v1, actively highlighting new comments. Only lemmy v0 it only shows you "X new comments" - but doesn't have the data to tell you what comments are new. On piefed this feature is not yet supported!

Thanks and I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend!

Android users: Thoughts on new beta feature?

Hey Voyager users!

I added a new feature for Android users (does not affect iOS). It's currently available in beta. Basically, if you try to swipe back from home/all/local you will see a popup asking you to confirm:

This was added after a lot of feedback from Android users: https://vger.social/post/29745268

It's a configurable setting (General -> Other -> Confirm Back from Home/All/Local).

My question is: Should this be on by default? Or not? As an android Voyager user, have you experienced this problem where you accidentally swipe back to the communities list? Or have you not experienced this problem?

https://images.nasa.gov/details/hubble-observes-one-of-a-kind-star-nicknamed-nasty_17754652960_o

Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have uncovered surprising new clues about a hefty, rapidly aging star whose behavior has never been seen before in our Milky Way galaxy. In fact, the star is so weird that astronomers have nicknamed it “Nasty 1,” a play on its catalog name of NaSt1. The star may represent a brief transitory stage in the evolution of extremely massive stars.

First discovered several decades ago, Nasty 1 was identified as a Wolf-Rayet star, a rapidly evolving star that is much more massive than our sun. The star loses its hydrogen-filled outer layers quickly, exposing its super-hot and extremely bright helium-burning core.

But Nasty 1 doesn’t look like a typical Wolf-Rayet star. The astronomers using Hubble had expected to see twin lobes of gas flowing from opposite sides of the star, perhaps similar to those emanating from the massive star Eta Carinae, which is a Wolf-Rayet candidate.

Instead, Hubble revealed a pancake-shaped disk of gas encircling the star. The vast disk is nearly 2 trillion miles wide, and may have formed from an unseen companion star that snacked on the outer envelope of the newly formed Wolf-Rayet. Based on current estimates, the nebula surrounding the stars is just a few thousand years old, and as close as 3,000 light-years from Earth.

Experimental Piefed support is now available for Voyager

UPDATE June 29: Piefed support is rolling out to the official store listings today in v2.37.0 🎉

I'm excited to announce that Voyager now has experimental support for logging in with Piefed! You can try it out today on:

This will roll out to the official app stores and vger.app soon(tm), once I’m confident there are no major regressions. If you prefer not to switch to beta builds, just hang tight.

Please note that Piefed support is EXPERIMENTAL! There are still many things that don't work quite right, which I'm hoping to improve over the coming weeks.

The basics including scrolling home/all/local, viewing posts, blocking, commenting and voting should work well. However there are some known issues:

  • Can't sign up for a Piefed account in-app, only log in with an existing one
  • Subscribed communities list is empty (should be fixed soon!)
  • Inbox tab doesn't load
  • Comment search doesn't work
  • Profile upvoted/downvoted doesn't load
  • No moderation tools
  • Mark as read doesn't persist
  • Creating/editing posts is currently untested
  • ...probably a bunch of other stuff too, please let me know below!

Behind the scenes, this interoperability is made possible thanks to aeharding/threadiverse, a new library I am working on to normalize various threadiverse-software APIs. It's open source so any project use it, but it's under heavy development right now. What's cool about this is in the future, adding support for mbin, or whatever else is possible!

Again, feel free to try it out and let me know if there are any more issues to be documented and fixed.

CORS doesn't work on the piefed API

Not sure where to post this: the Piefed API doesn't support CORS, at least testing against piefed.social, so requests from webapps like photon, alexandrite, voyager via PWA would not work.

Also, is there a way to pass a fedilink to resolve, like Lemmy resolveObject?

And lastly, how is Piefed planning on handling updates to the API for lemmy v1? Things like varying object type arrays being combined, and new/updated sorts.

Thanks!

Sharing posts with friends just got a lot easier. Also, vacation for next few weeks!

Hey everyone, version 2.35.0 is here and it has a pretty cool update :)

Lately I've been sharing Lemmy memes with one of my friends who has Voyager. Usually we just text meme images which works and is nice and quick. But sometimes I want to link to a specific Lemmy post! Previously, I sent the direct Lemmy link, e.g. https://lemmy.world/post/29827953. However, this opens in a web browser when my friend taps the link in the text message. They could click "open in voyager" from the share menu or paste in Voyager's search, but that's a lot of work for viewing a dumb meme.

So introducing https://go.getvoyager.app/! By changing the setting "General" -> "Share Instance" to "Voyager" (will be changed to default option in a month or so), tapping "Share" on a post, comment, community etc will share a link via https://go.getvoyager.app/. Like this: https://go.getvoyager.app/lemmy.world/post/29827953.

When my friend taps the link from their text message, it will automatically open in Voyager! And if my friend doesn't have Voyager installed, it will open a preview of the link, along with options to install Voyager. Pretty slick! That's the magic of universal links.

Let me know what you think! There's more FAQ here too. In other news I'm going to be on vacation for the next few weeks if you're wondering why development will slow/pause.

Introducing two-column mode! (BETA)

NOTE: This feature is currently being rolled out to the Apple and Google stores and should be available in the next day or two. However on desktop you can try it out right now (after enabling - see below) at https://vger.app/!

This is currently in BETA, and is turned off by default. On tablets and desktop, you can turn it on in Settings -> Appearance -> Layout. (The setting won't show up on phones.)

The right column is dedicated to viewing a specific post. The left column is for the regular navigation of the app.

Pro tip: On macOS, I recommend adding Voyager to your Dock (https://vger.app/) with Safari's new "Add to Dock" feature! Check out the above screenshot - it's quite slick.

Enjoy and let me know what you think!

Voyager Android users: Should the Android theme be the default?

I'm curious what you Android users think of the Android vs Apple theme for the Voyager app.

  • Which one do you prefer?
  • Which one do you think should be the default for new/novice users? Why?

This would be the default, but don't worry, you will always be able to choose. I would also like to note that in the future Voyager will have a Material 3 theme, but not yet!

Thanks for your help!

Edit: thanks everyone for the feedback. I think I’ll probably make android the default theme on android for new users.

Voyager’s new promo site!

Hey there!

I just published Voyager's new promo site at https://getvoyager.app/. This site is intended to be an easy way to share the app with your friends and family. Let me know what you think! I'm hoping to roll out a couple more improvements to user onboarding soon™️, so stay tuned.

In other news, I hope you like the latest app update! ICYMI: the video player was significantly revamped, you can now upload videos (assuming lemmy instance support: keep reading...), and Android users can now long press links to preview the url, as well as for share/copy/open options.

https://github.com/aeharding/voyager/releases/tag/2.26.0

Speaking of videos: If you've ever wondered why videos sometimes fail to play in iOS, it's because many Lemmy instances are misconfigured. Please share this site I just published with your Lemmy admin to help debug issues: https://aeharding.github.io/lemmy-streaming Around 50% of instances are misconfigured 😳 so I really appreciate your help on getting the word out to admins! 🫡

I love my l009 ❤️‍🔥

I recently got fiber internet and wanted to bypass all ISP equipment with the was110. Since I needed a router with SFP (I've had an Edgerouter-X for years) I decided to go switch to Mikrotik.

The l009 is such a nice router! I ended up pairing it with a cheap no-name multi gigabit managed switch (4x 2.5gb rj45 and 2x sfp+ for high speed transfers to my NAS) and a Mikrotik wAP AX for wifi, which is powered through the passive PoE on the l009.

I've been playing with LACP bonding, VLANs, firewalling and IPv6 and there is so much to it. It is such a great way to learn.

Mikrotik is a pretty cool company too. Fair prices, based the EU, have a fediverse presence (shout out @[email protected]) and support old hardware pretty much forever.

Granted, their equipment has a quite high learning curve. But if you have the time and patience, it is really rewarding.

Jellyfin is not just good... but *better* than Plex now?!

I've feel like I've used Plex forever. I also feel like every couple years I try Jellyfin to see how it's going. Recently I tried it again because of Plex restriction on more than one user.

Well, I just tried it again and it's substantially improved! This time it actually properly detected most of my library!

Also the Android TV app is AWESOME! No more glitches, lagging, and freezing trying to play my stuff like Plex did. It is butter smooth.

Wow! I'm impressed and I just deleted Plex. Good riddance.

active-backup bonding not working - SOLUTION

Well I couldn't find this on the internet anywhere-

I was having issues setting up active-backup bonding on my Mikrotik router via this guide.

Whenever I turned on both interfaces, I experienced packet loss.

The solution was to TURN OFF hardware offloading. It doesn't work with active-backup. The docs even say it doesn't work with hardware offloading, but it failed in a way that was hard for me to debug.

So yeah! Now works great, router <-> unmanaged switch with bond bridged.
