Mastodon announces transition to non-profit structure | TechCrunch

The important thing here is this avoids what happened with (and sorry i have to mention this ) #wordpress where one guy personally ran the org that guided the development of the software and then created dependencies on a central site he personally owns to control updates and access to plugins
Ownership of #trademark terms are important and open structures for things like.joinmastodon.org is as well

Is it useful to create your own Mastodon instance?

Have a look at lemmy.world/c/selfhosted - If you have a group of family or friends I think its a good way to get them on board and curate an instance that is useful for them.

Doesnt need to be #Mastodon - could be #Friendica or #Gotosocial

Lots of ways to simplify the process - I use #Yunohost gives me Email, Nextcloud and ActivityPub for friends and family

Ideally Id eventually like to see something like this packaged into a router like #openwrtone One

'Russian bombers are burning en masse' — Ukraine's SBU drones hit 'more than 40' aircraft in mass attack, source claims

Reply in thread

@AnalogNotDigital Ah I found BBC, Reuters and AP quoting the Ukranian SBU " SBU officially confirmed it had carried out the strikes, saying that "34% of [Russia's] strategic cruise missile carriers" were hit" - bbc.com/news/articles/c1ld7ppr… - and that " Tu-95 and Tu-22M3, as well as A-50 were destroyed" - Claims not yet independently verified. - It sounds like a massive hit but I have a feeling that we might see independent claims downgrading the figure a bit. The "strategic cruise missile carriers" is also a bit of qualifier. I would assume that there are independent estimates of what usable air power Russia has. I'm not seeing those chime in yet.

A Fediverse Permaculture

@Steven_T_Baxter So much to say here... Im a member of a sailing club thats run for 125 years.

Yes keep costs down - self host amoungst your users with a distrubuted solution and.. really simply.. if you want to survive you have to have a very clear and limited policy on freeloaders. As a group decide how much (if any) you are going to offer without contribution.

If you dont ask something of people in return its not a healthly relationship and you people will value what you do at the price you have put on it (zero) . They wont value the operation and will waste its resources.
