I see these MFs on a daily basis

I hate to be one of the “Linux isn’t ready” people, but I have to agree. I love Linux and have been using it for the last 15 years. I work in IT and am a Windows and Linux sysadmin. My wife wanted to build a new gaming PC and I convinced her to go with Linux since she really only wanted it for single player games. Brand new build, first time installing an OS (chose Bazzite since it was supposed to be the gaming distro that “just works”). First thing I did was install a few apps from the built in App Store and none of them would launch. Clicking “Launch” from the GUI app installer did nothing, and they didn’t show up in the application launcher either. I spent several hours trying to figure out what was wrong before giving up and opening an issue on GitHub. It was an upstream issue that they fixed with an update.

When I had these issues, the first thing my wife suggested was installing Windows because she was afraid she may run into more issues later on and it “just works”. If I had never used Linux and didn’t work in IT and decided to give it a try because all the cool people on Lemmy said it was ready for prime time, and this was the first issue I ran into, I would go back to Windows and this would sour my view of Linux for years to come.

I still love Linux and will continue to recommend moving away from Windows to my friends, but basic stuff like this makes it really hard to recommend.

Alright, I have shared my unpopular opinions on Lemmy, I’m ready for my downvotes.

Help Lemmy, Air Pods Pro 2 won't connect to my Steam Deck and I'm at an Airport about to hop on a 4 hour flight!

I had the same issue with mine, also in an airport. I ended up renaming them from my iPhone and was then able to pair them.

Edit to add: I thought pairing them from desktop mode may give me better luck, but it actually made things worse for some reason. Even after renaming them, I wasn’t able to pair them in desktop mode. Immediately after switching back to gaming mode, I was able to pair them.

Is this the future of Windows?

I manage a fleet of thin clients for our organization. We have been buying and managing them for 10+ years. They are a huge cost savings over desktops for shared environments (I work for a company in the manufacturing space). For users that do nothing other than log in and check their email and update a spreadsheet, being able to shove 10+ user sessions on a single VM is much more cost effective than deploying and managing a full desktop.

Plus, these devices can connect to Cloud PC’s, so users who need a dedicated machine can use these too. I have been using a Cloud PC for over two years now for all of my job functions and love it. I would happily take one of these devices, as all of my company issued devices are just used to connect to my Cloud PC.

Any recommendations for a 20TB hard drive?

Do they not still intermingle their stock? Last I remember, if a 3rd party seller lists a product that Amazon also sells, the stock is all put together in the Amazon warehouse. I’ve gotten counterfeit electronics even when it says “ships and sold by Amazon”. I’ve started buying from B&H.

VMWare FUD. Anyone moving away from it professionally?

We are an enterprise manufacturing company. We have lots of hosts on process networks not connected to the internet. Seems like the subscription license won’t be compatible, so we plan to seriously look at Proxmox for those in the coming years as we replace hosts.

For our datacenter, we decided to move everything to Azure. This decision was in the works before the license change, but the acquisition by Broadcom and their track record certainly played a part in the conversation.

For our site hosts, we are looking into Azure HCI or possibly Hyper-V, especially since these sites don’t have many VM’s and don’t need features offered by VMware.

If you’re an Azure expert and are looking for a new job, send me a message. We’re hiring.

In this case it was installing them from flathub anyway. The applications were being installed, but the only way to launch them was through the CLI using flatpak run then the app ID. Every article I came across said to run that, then right click the app after it was open and pin it to the taskbar or whatever, but that option was greyed out.

Cheaper Split Layout

The Corne is a very popular split keyboard that is very cheap. It requires some level of DIY, but the main board can be had for $33. It can also be made Bluetooth with the nice!nano. You will still need switches and caps, but depending on what you’re after, those can be cheap as well.

How are you making services remotely accessible?

I’ve been using Tailscale for about 2 months now. It has a VPN-on-demand setting that I keep enabled. That way, anytime I am not on my local WiFi, it automatically connects the VPN. According to my battery health settings, Tailscale has used 5% of my battery in the last 10 days. And I am even using a Mullvad exit node, which would use even more battery.

So true! It all started with a $30 hand grinder and a Chemex, and it has grown to this. Luckily, the espresso machine seemed to finally scratch the itch and I haven’t felt a need to get anything new or upgrade anything since then. Between coffee, photography, and custom keyboards, I have enough expensive hobbies.

A single DNS race condition brought AWS to its knees

These contracts do not stipulate reimbursement for lost revenue. The “uptime guarantee” just gets you a partial discount or service refund for the impacted services.

It is on the customer to architect their environment for high availability (use multiple regions or even multiple hyperscalers, depending on the uptime need).

Source: I work at an enterprise that is bound by one of these agreements (although not with AWS).

They mention in the post that other apps are coming soon. If they start letting you self host Protect, that will be huge. When they killed off Video, the only way to get their cameras to work was to buy their hardware that could run Protect. I was shocked when they allowed you to use 3rd party cameras in Protect.

Verifying -arr Downloads?

I would really recommend looking into Usenet. I was in your position a few months ago (starting to look for private trackers), but ended up hearing about Usenet and going that route instead. It has been amazing so far. It has everything I am looking for, I don’t need to worry about a VPN, and I can download as fast as my ISP can go, so I get my content in minutes instead of hours. I also don’t have to worry about my VPN disconnecting for some reason and my ISP sending me a nasty letter. The only downside is, if you want the best, you’ll have to pay for an indexer and a downloader, but it’s not that expensive and is certainly worth it for the benefits over torrents.

To drink, it usually just depends on my mood. Sometimes I just use the v60. For espresso, I usually make latte’s with oat milk. The oat milk gives a nice nutty flavor that I love. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll add some white chocolate and go for a white chocolate mocha.

For beans, I’ve been loving Fellow Drops. Haven’t gotten bad beans from them yet!

Thanks! Mean bean is correct, it is the Quick Mill Corola Evo! I was hesitant to buy it at first because I couldn’t find many reviews, and the reviews I did find were for an earlier model that is no longer being sold. I’m glad I went with this one, as I don’t care to have a steam wand (I bought a Brevel frother to take its place). This unit focuses solely on the espresso, so for the price it is very good at pulling shots.

Don’t feel inadequate! Coffee is coffee and we all start somewhere. Our love of coffee is what brings us together, not the amount of money we’ve spent on equipment in pursuit of the perfect cup. Oddly enough, a French Press is the one brewer I DON’T own lol.
