Supreme Court returns Trump Jan. 6 immunity judgment to lower court

Save you a click:

In a 6-3 ruling authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, the court found that a president has absolute immunity for acts within their core constitutional powers and a presumption of immunity for "acts within the outer perimeter of his official responsibility."

Judge Chutkan will now be responsible for applying the Supreme Court's decision to the allegations in Trump's criminal case, including whether Trump's actions were "official acts" or private conduct that can be prosecuted.

Google just lost a big antitrust trial. Now it has to face another.

Save you a click:

The second case that begins next month began with a lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by the Justice Department and eight states in December 2020, during former President Trump’s administration.

Prosecutors allege that since at least 2015 Google has thwarted meaningful competition and deterred innovation through its ownership of the entities and software that power the online advertising technology market.

Former Alaska Airlines pilot who tried to shut down engines in-flight shares his story

Save you a click:

Joe Emerson had been struggling over the death of his best friend, Scott, a pilot who died while on a run six years earlier. Emerson had been away for the weekend with friends, celebrating and remembering Scott.

On Friday night, the group took psychedelic mushrooms – a drug that can make you hallucinate and typically has effects that last a few hours. Emerson said that for him, the physical side effects lasted days, and the consequences a lifetime.

"There are two red handles in front of my face," Emerson recalled. "And thinking that I was going to wake up, thinking this is my way to get out of this non-real reality, I reached up and I grabbed them, and I pulled the levers."

Using AI, researchers identify a new class of antibiotic candidates that can kill a drug-resistant bacterium

A key innovation of the new study is that the researchers were also able to figure out what kinds of information the deep-learning model was using to make its antibiotic potency predictions. This knowledge could help researchers to design additional drugs that might work even better than the ones identified by the model.

That is awesome. I wonder if the techniques that they have used to expose the machine learning “black box” process can be applied to other models - from my understanding of it, that would be pretty big news in and of itself.

Changed ISP and server now unreachable

I have AussieBB and had to give them a call at one point to allow inbound traffic so I could expose my self-hosted server. They flicked a switch for my account and then everything came good.

If you give them a ring and explain what you’re trying to do it should get sorted out very quickly. Their customer service staff are very knowledgeable and friendly - they’re the best RSP I’ve ever had.

Imperial units people, Do you sometimes get confused about time units as well?

Reply in thread

On “we as people can perceive imperial temperatures a lot better than metric,” I’d agree to disagree here - Celsius is pretty straight-forward. Temperate is temperature, it’s just about what numbers you’re assigning to which temperatures.

0°C is when water freezes, and 100°C is when water boils. A 10°C day is cold, a 20°C day is mild, a 30°C day is hot, and a 40°C day is when you melt.

Whatever you grew up with is probably what is going to be easiest for you to comprehend, but Celsius is no more difficult or less perceptible, just a different value range.

Trump Is Not Okay. Here’s What He Posted After That $350 Million Fine.

I’ll save you a click…

Moments after Donald Trump got walloped with a $354 million financial penalty and banned from operating businesses in New York for committing real estate-related bank fraud, he took to Truth Social to complain about… a 2017 photo that makes him look fat.

For no clear reason, Trump brought the doctored photo, which depicts Trump’s face on an image of professional golfer and Trump supporter John Daly, back into the limelight.

“The Fake News used Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) to create the picture on the top left,” Trump wrote. “These are despicable people, but everyone knows that. The other pictures are me hitting Golf balls today to show the difference. Sadly, in our Country, Fake News is all you get!”

He also talked about Sneakercon.
